How do you know it's a bad IC?

It's near the big thing with blue and yellow wires. That is on the side
of a thing that looks like a little green round thing but should be black
but if not maybe green also. Trace that thing over by the other thing and
you might see a thing that matches it. If so look to the left of that
thing and underneath another thing. Let me know how it works out for you.

The vertical amp IC is usually a SIP attached to a heatsink, around 9
pins or so.
Replace the electrolytic capacitors in the neighbourhood of this IC.
Typical part number prefixes are TA (Toshiba), AN (Matsushita,
Panasonic), LA (Sanyo).
You can probably find a datasheet, with application circuit, here:

I got a cheapie with that much resistance, is why the number rang a
bell. A cheapie no name meter that measures .8 or .9 ohm for short
circuit with its skinny leads ;)
But, the OP mentioned upthread the 2.8ohm value was marked on the
resistor, the size of his resistors are similar to some 5ohm 300W
resistors I have here (Ohmite C300K5R0E).

And yet they let the FA's pass out aluminum pop cans, that when drained
and folded in half, then torn by flexing them across the edge of the
fold-down tray, make two dandy slashing weapons, with convenient hand grips.
To anyone who has had any training (and no, I haven't had any), the
cabin is full of all sorts of improvised weapons there for the taking,
not to mention how easy it is to make a weapon look like part of a
carry-on bag. Security theater, nothing more. The real security is the
armored cabin door, and the revised protocols for hijack situations. In
short, cabin crew and pax are expendable, and the bad guys know it.
Cabin crew and pax know it too, which is why you had people swarming the
last few idiots. Can't hijack a plane any more, but you may be able to
destroy one in flight.

Oh dear - usual OMFG WTF LOL kneejerk Web 2.0 response.
Ever put (even a cheap) CRT set next to the average LCD or plasma ?
Thought not...a huge number (especially LCD) suffer from poor colour
temperature, motion, and 'orrible digital processing, not to mention
the lower lifespan. To get something better than the OP's current Sony
CRT will probably mean spending quite a bit on one of the better Sony
or Panasonic LCDs or a plasma - certainly, what he has now will blow
most of what's currently around in the low -mid price range out of the
water.
Your naive claim that 'many manufacturers supply full service
documentation and troubleshooting charts' is somewhat dated to put it
politely- you can probably count these on the fingers of the hand of a
twice-convicted Saudi shoplifter! And most are very anal about who
they supply it to, if and when you do find it. I have conversations
daily with other techs who lament the increasingly limited service
backup, especially from big and respected names, which has been in
such steep decline in the past decade.
The sheer expense of repair for so many flat panels comes down largely
to the fact that in many cases now, the tech's job is limited to being
a board jockey, since these are simply pcb-swaps not component level
servicing (with the exception of the odd obvious cap in the PSU or or
inverter). In one recent case I had, the PSU and inverter were one and
the same PCB - would have cost over 100€ to replace, such a wasteful
design, even though the PSU part was Ok. Owner declined the
estimate....and let's not forget the Z-SUS and Y-SUS which usually
both have to be changed at once....
Makes you long for the days or arcing Line output transformers!

Pat, most of the Philips chips in the Scopemeter instruments are
application-specific; there is no off-the-shelf replacement or cross
reference of any kind for any of these OEM chips. But I believe I can
help you; my company specializes in Scopemeter repairs and
calibrations. We likely have a good, used chip we can sell you, or,
if you would like, we can take a look at your scope to certify that
the problem is indeed the chip and not some other issue. Let me know
if you are interested. We work on Scopemeters daily, and have a fair
inventory of used parts on hand.

Hello:
I live in a 230V area but need to use a 120V fan to repair an amplifier.
I can only get 230V fan motors here, so i was wondering if i can simply
remove turns from a 230v shaded pole motor to make it into a 120v one?
Thank you.

No. It's highly unlikely that the wire used in the motor is more than
100% overspecified, so if you remove turns from it to make it run at the
same speed on 120v, it will overheat, because the current will
approximately double.
