In my experience, most (but not all) of these floppys are NOT standard PC
drives. Why this is/was the case I have never really understood. (Unless
it was for the manufacturers to make more money on spare parts). In your
case here, count yourself lucky!

I did once try and investigate whether it was possible to reconfigure
standard drives to work in various keyboards/samplers etc, but at the time
couldn't find enough data, or the time, to do so.

Do you mean non-3.5 inch or not directly swappable FD from a PC to one of
these?
I did not try an ex-PC FD in the Roland.
Noted the type as in the Roland as
Panasonic JU 257A 726P, not researched it, as the green FD front panel LED
was not lit before fiddling and did come on after fiddling and with it
return to function

I mean that for most keyboards and samplers etc, swapping in a new PC
3.5inch floppy drive does not and never has worked.

I once installed a PC DVDRW in a stand alone DVD recorder. However
I used the control boards from the stand alone recorder on the
replacement drive. Both were LiteOn products, the drives were 99% the
same.

Knowing this to work one would assume that a standard 34 pin floppy would
interchange regardless of the unit. That is unless there is some
specialized ROM on a keyboard or synth drive.

There are legions of Akai, Roland, Korg, Emu and Yamaha owners out there
that dearly wish this were true .....

Shouldn't I95 be a flux-capacitor?

Movement sensing to mode switching query. Very sensitive to vibration,
dropping into mixer setting away from voice mode without touching any pot or
control.
2006 , PbF but no mention anywhere, output level pot seemed to be the most
sensitive, logical as most used one. Solder yucky and partially-cracked
(that river ravine type appearance ) but not obviously failed joints at the
pins under x30 , but as pots, cannot sensibly do a tug test. Redid solder
on all pots and most of the heatsinky joints on that board and replaced vol
pot. No pots showed anything amiss monitoring wiper V or R and knocking.
Anyway much improved but a serious knock to the board, not the pots
themselves will trigger mixer mode. Setting any pot to half and paralleling
an insulated (not fingering as induced stray will trigger) R to it then 100K
// to half 10K will trigger MIX mode but not 390K // 5K so
trigger delta R is about 2 or 3 percent , is this normal , low? any sort of
standard for this pot-swiching action trigger level? Adding C at the pots
does not seem to be an option - latches up the sensing, unless a very
specific amount between 10n and 330nF , so far only tried

When it switches to Edit mode, does it not tell you which parameter pot
change has triggered this?

Usually this is down to a worn pot which just needs replacing - the machine
tells you which one it is as the parameter name is highlighted in the
display.

Nothing flashes up, differentially, in the display but I suppose I should
have noted the readings as set before to notice a change - next time I come
across this sort of fault.
I've settled for sometime a heavy tap with a large screwdriver handle to the
edge of the pcb triggering mode change rather than most times a light tap
with a ballpoint barrel as being as it should be. Wrapped up for them for a
practise session this evening, will see if it bounces.

I can't help with the Linux part, but maybe you can use some
circuits I developed for my Windows-based Daqarta system.
There is a simple temperature to frequency converter at
<http://www.daqarta.com/dw_kkee.htm>. It uses an LM335
temperature sensor plus an LM331 V-F, powered from a 9V
battery.

Besides the schematic and design formulas, there is a link
there to a printable board layout if you want to roll your
own. There is also a link to an ExpressPCB board layout
that you can modify and/or submit to ExpressPCB to have them
make the boards. (I have no connection to ExpressPCB, but
their software seems to have an easy learning curve, and is
free for non-commercial use.)

Note that all this assumes you have Linux software that can
measure frequencies. (Daqarta does that in Windows, plus
provides calibration for direct temperature readout in C or
F, including negative readings.)

Best regards,

Bob Masta

Thermocouples are really really horrible temperature sensors--almost as
bad as ICs. Their advantages are small size, relatively low cost, and
(potentially) high speed, but their disadvantage is that it's really
hard to get good measurements.

One reason for this is thermal conduction down the leads (which is a big
problem for most temperature sensors). There's a worse one, though:
due to their very low sensitivity, thermocouples are extremely
vulnerable to errors caused by offset drift in the circuitry. See
Figure 20.3 on P. 803 at http://electrooptical.net/www/book/draftthermal.pdf

Okay, now I'm going to *have* to buy that book!

had this nice VCR i sold to a customer
I set it up in his house and it was fine
2 weeks latter he is having issues

i got it back and tested it.
through the line outputs it seems to work fine
through the RF CH4 modulated output, its a blue screen
It seems the modulator is putting out a carrier,
but no information. If i do the TV/VCR switch, i can see
the TV channels OK on the TV with pass through mode.
I don't have the manual on this beast.
I checked the menu, and there is a way to disable the RF mod
in the set up menu. I double checked it, and its enabled.
I even toggled it for good measure.

This does not sound like a modulator issue, but i am kind of
stumped on this without further information. Anybody got any ideas
on this or have a PDF manual on the HS-U580?

Hi Bob,

I'd check the caps first. Maybe a few are leaking and wreaking havoc on the
circuit board. Is the audio missing as well? Just to make sure I understand
your problem, is the screen also blue when playing a tape as well as going
through the tuner?

I have a computer that I believe must be really infected with spyware.
Is there a spyware removal program, (preferably a free one), available
to download that I can trust that won't just load more crap onto my
poor suffering machine? It has been running very very slowly and
sometimes just almost to the point oof stopping in the midst of an
operation. I have on many occaisions had to pull the plug and reboot
and it will work for a short time and then sort of hang again. It has
become really frustrating. For a time I had been getting messages
about the computer having to access more virtual memory and lately I
have been seeing messages telling me that I am seriously low on hard
drive space. At one point I was down to 37MB. The last message said it
was 11MB. I know that I am not saving anything on this machine so
SOMETHING has been apparently filling it up. If anyone can please help
me with this I would be very grateful. Lenny

First, disconnect from any network or dialup connections.

If the PC is running XP, right-click on "My Computer", click
"Properties", click "System Restore", and set the disk space to
minimum. After that runs, you should have some disk space available.

Start Internet Explorer, click "Tools", then "Options". Under
"Browsing history", click "Settings" and set "Disk Space" to 20.

Connect to the network/dialup.
Download the free version of Malwarebytes from
http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4716-malwarebytes-anti-malware.html

Download the free version of ZoneAlarm
http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/free-upgrade-security-suite-zonealarm-firewall-search.htm

Download the free version of Avira:
http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

Install ZoneAlarm, Avira, and Malwarebytes.

Let these programs get any updates they needs from the network, then
disconnect from the network/dialup and let Malarebytes run - it may
take a while.

Then run a full scan of the disk with Avira - this will also take a
while.

These should clear the most common problems and ZoneAlarm will protect
your PC from new intruders.

Do keep the sotware updated - new threats come out frequently. Also
do the Microsoft updates - they are free and some of them are are
security-related.

Remember not to click on every interesting link you find - if the
offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is and is a sourceof
infection. Offers ofkeys to or free versions of expensive software
(Office, games, etc) are more likely to be bad than good - so are
naked pictures of famous people.

Standard PC 3.5 inch FD in the xp 60 . Removing it and poking around and
refitting I can save to a PC formatted disk and load back a "song" and read
as HEX files on a pc so perhaps stuck stepper spindle or connector problem.

If it's standard it could be replaced with a PC drive, that's good.

In that circuit, a geranium transistor would work as well as any other. :)

I'm looking for a recommendation for a low cost thermocouple DAQ that works with ubuntu linux.
Can someone recommend one. I'm trying to record temperture measurements over time.

If it's low cost you're after, it would be hard to beat TEMPer USB (

which Amazon sells for ~$13 but you can use eBay search skills to find one
for for $7 shipped (from Hong Kong tho - need to wait ~2 weeks to get it
here in US) you'd be limited to -40C to +120C range tho

As far as working with Ubuntu (or other Linux flavors for that matter), it
shows up as a HID (Human Interface Device) and there is a Perl library
(Device::USB::PCSensor::HidTEMPer) you can use to poll it.
