Nope. I'm mostly interested in unpackaged Li-Ion and LIPO unpackaged
batteries for model airplane and robotic use. Also, I've tested some
cell phone batteries and tested for some oddities, such as NiMH
batteries that actually increase in capacity on initial charge. It
takes a long time to test a battery properly, so I don't do it often.
The bigger the battery, the longer it takes to discharge.

I have a similar need for older toshiba packs.
Problem with lithiums is that they degrade whether
you use 'em or not. Most battery packs you can find today
were manufactured about the same time as the laptop.
It's unlikely that you'll find anything newer than
10 years old for a 15 year old laptop.
I think the only viable alternative is to have the
pack rebuilt with new cells.
There are people who do that, but it ain't cheap.

It is possible to rebuild them yourself.
I bought used spot welder for the purpose.
New cells with tabs cost more than a new pack.
I tried to use cells from a different good pack.
It's a crap shoot depending on the controller design.
Some lose their brains when you remove power and it's all over.
Others remember the previous capacity, so the new battery won't
last much longer than the old one.
I've only found one battery pack with a pic processor in it.
I managed to reset the pic and recovered it.

In my experience, you can buy a newer laptop with a usable battery
at a garage sale cheaper than you can buy a used/bad battery for
an older laptop. Even if you do have to buy a battery, it'll be
a newer vintage.

AS for the pack connectors, there's almost nothing that can be done
from the outside...by design...they don't want people blowing themselves up
and suing them.
There's data/clock pins that access half of the chip to readout status.
There's a different isolated bus inside the pack that can be used to program
the parameters into the chip. You have to take it apart, and build an
interface.
But you still have no idea the data format of what numbers to put in.
There's a vendor who will send you the code for a hefty fee per battery.

To get batteries apart, you clamp them in a vise along the seam.
Use a sharp wood chisel and a lightwieght hammer. Smack it along the seam.
You want high peak force to snap the seam without a lot of mass to penetrate
the pack. It's easy to damage the cells or the circuit board, cause the
plastic is thin
and sits right on 'em. You can't just pull the plastic apart,
you have to break the joint.
And they're typically glued in, so getting the cells out of the plastic
can be a challenge. Be careful where you pry, cause there are thermistors
and thermal fuses buried in there.

Bottom line, unless you have a LOT of packs to fix, give it up.
Have someone who knows what they're doing, recell it.
Or better yet, go to a few garage sales and get a better laptop.
People are decommissioning some mighty fine laptops to make room
for their shiny new ipad.

Not even a little bit?

>PAT testing is all about the possibility that electrical equipment may
>become unsafe after a period of use, due to wear and tear, accidental damage
>and water ingress.

That's not a problem in the USA. We have the worlds best throw away
society. Our tools and electrical equipment are never allowed to get
old enough to become dangerous. No self respecting government
employee would even consider using a used tool or machine. At the
first sign of wear or damage, the device is immediately thrown away,
err... recycled, and replaced with a brand new Chinese replacement.
This may also explain why the USA is nearly bankrupt.

>It is only *required* to be done were equipment is of a portable kind and
>provided for staff and others to use in a work environment.

In the USA, workers and staff are largely expendable. In some cases,
the tools and equipment are worth more than the operator. I don't see
much reason for an expensive PAT tester, when simply replacing the
operator will probably be cheaper.

>For example, hire businesses have to regularly PAT test any electrical items
>they rent to folk.

Yeah, that makes sense. The tools and equipment that isn't recycled
or stolen, usually ends up at the local rental yards. I recently had
to rent a chain saw with a big 36" bar. While not electrical, it
would not have passed even a cursory safety inspection. Instead of
mandating PAT testing, perhaps it might be better to give the money
back to the businesses so they can afford to buy new equipment?

>It's an idea dreamt up by bureaucrats - and rather pointless since
>electrical faults and damage occur at ANY time and PAT testing does nothing
>to prevent that.

But, if it saves one life, it must obviously be worth the cost and
effort. That's also the logic here in the USA, particularly in the
drug and product liability industry. If there's only one victim among
millions of perfectly safe users, that's sufficient grounds for
extorting substantial sums from the vendors and enriching the legal
establishment. The search for victims has even extended to TV
advertising by law firms.

Just a minor note... It takes some time for bulging caps to develop.
It's unlikely that there's enough energy in a wall wart to destroy the
caps during a PAT test. It's also not over voltage that kills the
caps. It's the ripple current through the cap that causes the
heating. A cap, with a fixed DC voltage applied, will not blow
(unless the dielectric is perforated). More likely, the caps were
defective and blown for many months prior to the PAT test.

Yes, we know that's the theory. What I was asking was what, on a
plastic-cased boom box with no external connectors, you would consider to be
an appropriate 'exposed metal part', to test against. The FM telescopic
antenna, maybe ? And then, just for good measure, hit the thing with a flash
test as well ? Because it happens. PAT testers are dangerous items in the
hands of electricians, who do not understand electronics, and the
sensitivity of LSIs to blasts of high voltage. *That's* what I meant by
"inappropriate" PAT testing, but of course, as ever, there were you, running
off at the mouth with what bit of brain you still have that's not totally
addled, completely disengaged.

You are, Philip, a total knob-head ...

If you can read the flash memory, then checksum its contents. You
could also inspect the contents for misspelt text strings.

Another thing to try is to lift the chip's clock pin (serial flash),
or its CS or OE pin (parallel flash). If the machine's symptoms remain
the same, then it's a good bet that the flash is bad, or its supply
has too much ripple.

If the regulator is linear, then I'd say it is faulty. Otherwise, if
it is a switchmode type, then it could be a capacitor issue.

First of these looked as though a failure of the tuner block. Owner bought
another one for spares, removable front display missing.

This one has exactly the same fault symptom so more likely a problem with
the front panel (or improbable same tuner fault on 2 separately acquired
units).
Tuner will go into auto strongest signal search and store in memory and also
readout follows manual input of frequency and stores in memory but at no
point does the audio come through to the output amp.
Pressing the presets shows the frequencies but no audio. Injecting local
modulated RF in there and audio is outputed and stays invariant on pressing
any preset so stuck on one RF tuning setting. So not a false muting problem

Some of the main chip SM solderings seemed suspect so redid the non LCD
segment ones. Cleaned the 14 pin front to interior header plug. No stuck
closed keys. It looks as though the front has been kneed at some point as
the ring around the rotary encoder button is cracked but no pcb problems
found.
The LCD clock, CE and data lines between the 14 pin header and the 64 pin
chip trace through. Not possible to scope anything on the board without
making up a one-off extender cable.
I'm assuming some data problem but what changes between sending data to and
from the tuner to load the presets and normal listening mode?
Schematics are out there for this model

I have a few of those in the office. After 15 years, most are dead or
fairly close to dead. Any of the battery analyzer programs mentioned
should give you an estimated capacity. However, the best test is to
simply run the laptop on battery and see how long it lasts. If it
won't run the laptop, consider it dead.

Check eBay:
<http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=PA2490U>
Some used battery packs, probably in the same condition as yours.

Those are sensors, protection circuitry, and i/o for the charge

Hi Jeff,

Have you opened any of your dead packs? If yes, any tips?

Am wondering if a cyanoacrylate was the adhesive? Have you tried a
debonder before opening packs?

Nope. I haven't opened them. I keep a few on hand because some of
the early Toshiblah laptops would not run on charger power unless a
battery (dead or otherwise) was installed. I'll look at it to see how
it comes apart, but I don't want to wreck them.

Dunno. If it was cyanoacrylate, it will be brittle. Beat on the seam
with a stiff putty knife and you'll crack the glue joint. That works
on some other battery packs I've broken open.

Hi,

I have a Roland drum machine in for repair. The machine powers up and goes
through the Operating System upgrade, up to the point the Flash is written
to, where it fails and the unit will not boot, showing a "damaged memory"
warning. I suspect the Flash chip is faulty.

When I informed the owner of my findings, he then tells me he thinks it was
damaged by a PAT test. It is powered by a Wall Wart, and he thinks it was
plugged into the unit during the test, as it stopped working immediately
afterwards.

An internal inspection shows around 10 caps around the internal power
supplies are bulging and have leaked guff onto the PCB. The 3.3v rail is at
over 4 volts, so presumable the regulator is toast.

So, if you PAT test a Wall Wart plugged into a unit and turned on, what is
likely to happen? What I have just described perhaps?
Or did someone just use the wrong power supply instead and isn't letting on?

Cheers,

Gareth.

Regulator might be toast. Or, you might be measuring a fairly high
ripple current because none of the capacitors are working. Measure it
with an oscilloscope to be sure.

Yes. See:
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAS_syndrome>

Note that we don't have PAT testers in the USA. As part of our
governments War on Industry, we trust the outsourced manufacturures in
China to produce consumer appliances that electrocute only a modest
number of users. We also enjoy the protection of a litigatory
environment, that inspires massive recalls if one defective appliance
is found on the theory that if one is defective, then the entire
production run is also likely to be defective. We also have various
testing and certification labs, that will guarantee that an appliance
design will not kill the user or initiate a fire, even if the
appliance doesn't work. With these protections in place, there's no
need for PAT testing.

Well that's just great, Jeff!

In the UK we expect cheap crap to break, and to subsequently kill people.
The fact that it never really has doesn't stop our enthusiasm for Health And
Safety in spades.

Thanks for the RAS syndrome link.
I've always chuckled at the naming of the programming language GNU, the
acronym for "GNU's Not Unix".

** Got NOTHING to do with PAT testing !!!

PAT testing is all about the possibility that electrical equipment may
become unsafe after a period of use, due to wear and tear, accidental damage
and water ingress.

It is only *required* to be done were equipment is of a portable kind and
provided for staff and others to use in a work environment.

For example, hire businesses have to regularly PAT test any electrical items
they rent to folk.

It's an idea dreamt up by bureaucrats - and rather pointless since
electrical faults and damage occur at ANY time and PAT testing does nothing
to prevent that.

Now if a numb-skull used the discrete IEC lead tester, flash-tester, instead
of the more down-to-ground ;-) PAT tester then expect such damage

Over the years, I've seen a lot of items from schools and commercial
premises that have odd microprocessor-y problems, and a recent PAT sticker
on them, so I'm certain in my own mind, that these have suffered damage as a
result of either inept or inappropriate use of a tester. The items in
question, are often boom boxes that are double insulated, and have a
removable figure 8 power lead, so there is absolutely no point in applying
these tests, anyway. As to wall-wart powered stuff, I can't recall ever
seeing an item that may have been damaged in such a way, but if other items
with a similar small power transformer fixed internally can suffer, I don't
see why it shouldn't also be the case for an externally powered device. I
think, however, with the bulging caps you say you've found, in this case
it's probably either a wrong power supply having been used, or just general
failure, rather than a PAT issue. Is it from a school ? If it is, it's
probably either left on all the time, or subject to dopey kids and teachers
digging it out of a cupboard in the music room, and jamming in the first
power connector that fits, and appears to make it work ...

Thanks Arfa, I was hoping for some real world experience.

This units power supply also has a 2 core mains lead, the 13A plug having a
proper metal pin, so could be mistaken for an earthed unit re: PAT testing.
It is not from a school.

I'm not sure what happens with "inappropriate" PAT testing, hence this post.
I was wondering if a high voltage was able to break through or induced to
the secondary winding to zap the unit in question if it was plugged in and
turned on.

As for the bulging caps, it would surely take some power to do this, which I
guess could not come from a PAT tester, though if they were zapped by one,
subsequent use of the unit with its own power supply may cause further
damage?

As per my post, I suspect, like you, this was a "wrong PSU used numpty
error", though any info on the hazards of PAT testing is welcome.

Cheers,

Gareth.

** The reverse is true.

Class 2 items are the most important to PAT test - as they RELY, 100%,
on insulation quality to be safe.

So the leakage test is ESSENTIAL !

What a charming man.

OK, I have looked a little deeper into this problem now with a schematic,
and it seems that all the electro caps on both sides of the 3 main regulator
circuits are bursting, as are a few smaller ones dotted about the PCB.
Unless a PAT tester can somehow damage all these caps downline of the
regulators, without blowing the regulators, I now suspect this to be a bad
batch of electrolytics.

The 4.1 volts I measured at the 3.3v regulator is, as Jeff suggested, due to
ten tons of ripple and HF hash. Replacing the 3 on the 3.3v regulator
restores it to 3.3v with a bit of ripple, so this reg is probably OK.

The caps are green Jamicon 105degree types. All 220uF 16v ones have blown,
as have a few 100uF 16v of the same type. All the 10uF 16v ones dotted
about look OK.

What fun.

Possibly. In general, wall warts are class II items with no earth pin
so visual inspection is all I would do.
In the (unlikely) event that it was a Class I device with earth pin
and exposed metalwork then a voltage test would be made between line
and the metalwork and a resistance check from metal to earth pin.
I would not test a wall wart with equipment (e.g. printer) connected
as the equipment will be working on low voltage and not be subject to
testing.
I doubt that a short pulse of high voltage would cause caps to bulge
anyway.

I got a couple pseudo theater amps that shut down with no input. I
also think some active subwoofers also shut Down.

Mine, however, is a 5.1 Sony home cinema amp with built in DVD (that I don't
use), and remains fully powered with or without input. I am, however, fully
familiar with the types that do shut down. I have repaired two in the last
three weeks.

If you're reading it right at the AC bridge, expect 160VDC for 120VAC
in.

This is a good place to get the advice that you need, but please note, it is
not a forum, it is a usenet newsgroup. Forums are typically web based and
have moderators who have access to the content allowing them to edit or
remove posts. Usenet news groups usually do not have any kind of moderation.
You might be accessing this group via a web-based 'front end'. There are
quite a few about now. It doesn't really make a lot of difference from a
user point of view, unless you get into an argument. Also, replies posted on
the group can be slow to be trawled by the front end site. If you are
accessing via one of these websites, you might consider making use of one of
the free usenet clients such as Xnews, for an altogether better experience.

I had the ceramic top on my GE stove crack twice in the first two
years I owned it. The first time it was automatically covered by the
manufacturers warranty. The second time I had to fight GE to get them
to cover it, and eventually they did. The repairman each time he came
out had no explanation for the two mishaps. It's now been 8 years
since the second top and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'll never
pay for a third new top nor will I ever buy another ceramic top stove.
My wife cooks and I clean up and don't get me wrong, a glass top stove
is a breeze to clean up but in my opinion transferring heat through
the ceramic is both a bad idea and a very inefficient way to heat a
pan. Lenny

You probably picked your one up the way I pick up mine. Its the ink-jet
scenario over again. The bulb starts failing/fails and someone is commanded
to find the price of a new bulb. Bloody hell ! , that much , we may as well
go out and buy a new one. So all that wonderous technology lands up in a
skip.
If your lucky, find the bogus "bulb-life" reset procedure and maybe get a
few hundred more hours out of it. Lenses a matter of cobbling something
together, at least they're not anisometric.

ps
Surely someone out there knows where to get basic compact mercury discharge
lamps for something like discharge floodlight lamp prices, designed to be
fan cooled. Its a bit of a work up fitting conventional floodlight lamps in
the available space.

You may get some life out of the lamp, but you won't get 5000 lumens.
Lamps usually stay at this rating for a few hours and steadily
decline. Lamp life is usually between 1500 and 2000hours. This means
that after that time period, the lumens generated will be less than
2500 total. While the lamp will fire, the picture won't be that
bright.

The lamp assembly for this unit runs about $500 US. This includes the
housing. The lamp alone will run around $400.

You can expect a lens for this unit to run between $3,000-$5,000
depending upon the distance for projection.

Please keep in mind that this projector is a $15000 machine that was
released in 2004.

++++++++

Agreed on reducing light output.
The actual contents of the bulb watt for watt is the same as a conventional
elipsoidal floodlight mercury discharge bulb , they are dirt cheap. The
difference is they are housed in a smaller volume envelope because they will
be fan cooled, unlike floodlight use. So what it comes down to is 390
dollars for a smaller envelope.

i've had success on two different tubs, essentially with DIY
plastic welding. on one tub, i used a low wattage soldering
iron, partially melting the edges of the crack and melt-filling
the crack with strips from a polyethylene milk jug. on the
other tub, i used the heat of a glue gun to melt the edges of
the crack and also melt-filling, as described above.

I may try the welding you described if my silicone does not hold. I
was able to take off the spanner nut last night and remove the metal
tub. I tried removing the plastic tub but I did not want to disturb
the center seal. I applied a liberal amount of silicone to the inside
of the tub. I roughed up and cleaned the surface pretty well in hopes
of increasing the bond. I will let the group know if it holds.

Hi!
Sony TV KDL 40S4100
How much voltage should be on the bridge rectifier? The relay clicks and
nothing happens.
Thanks for any info I can get.

Thanks everyone for your comments! Will try to answer each question.

This question was general because my new camera and laptop have Li
batteries and while I have a lot of experience with NiCd and NiMH
batteries have no experience with Li batteries so would like to learn
how to test them and maximize their life expectancy.

JW "Assuming YM laptops.http://www.passmark.com/products/batmon.htm
" Thanks for the Passmark tip will try it.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for all the links!

The Li Ion battery pack I am most interested in checking is a Toshiba
PA2490U (10.8V 3600mAh) While it is new to me the Laptop and battery
pack is ~ 15 yrs old.

The only packs I have found are recycled ones
http://www.recycledgoods.com/products/Toshiba-PA2490U-Tecra-500-510-Series-Li-ION-Battery-10.8V-3600mAh.html

Until I can test these Li Ion battery packs am unable to evaluate
them.

Some of the links you provided mention testing each cell of the pack.
The Toshiba has 8 connectors between the - & + and 2 more so hope
everything can be checked without opening the pack.

Has anyone had experience with these Toshiba Li Ion packs?

Ken

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your comments. Hopefully my previous posts have answered
why I want to test Li Ion battery packs.

"I've taken packs that wouldn't run a laptop for 10 minutes and tested
them at lower current.  I got almost ALL of the original watt-hours
out.  I've switched to testing individual cells for internal
resistance." Hope you have some experience with the Toshiba Li Ion
battery packs!

Have done some searches but have not found any info on the pack
connectors.

Ken

I have a few of those in the office. After 15 years, most are dead or
fairly close to dead. Any of the battery analyzer programs mentioned
should give you an estimated capacity. However, the best test is to
simply run the laptop on battery and see how long it lasts. If it
won't run the laptop, consider it dead.

Check eBay:

Some used battery packs, probably in the same condition as yours.

Those are sensors, protection circuitry, and i/o for the charge
controller in the battery back.

Only in replacing them.
