I removed the filter cap to measure the inductance of L1 . Cap marked 1uF,
250V.
This L1 weighs about 170 gm, estimating weight of remainder components and
pcb from total of 290 gm.
Through a hole I can see some wire about 1mm diameter.
Using 1KHz RLC meter, L1 measures -2.2H on H scales and -140mH on mH scales,
don't know what that means , will try and find a manual for an Avo B183.
Maybe faulty, but measuring plain inductors through the scales is positive
and consistent across neighbouring scales.
1KHz ac resistance is 230R, DC resistance is 4K so perhaps what is labelled
as L1 is R and L in series.
Perhaps R of 4K and L of .6H , to give 230R at 1KHz, but if wholly 1mm wire
I cannot see how 600mH with 170gm of 1mm wire, strange core material?

I won't speak for any of the others, but Buddhism doesn't consider
itself to be "the One True Path..." that everyone must follow. In fact,
Buddhist principals allow one to be both Buddhist and to follow another
religion if you so want. (Of course that other religion won't stand for
that...)

Buddhists don't go around trying to convert others... We don't send
missionaries out to change the world. We try, as best we can to change
ourselves into something better.

1.8mm slabs of porcelain under TO220 devices.

(This is continuation of Ampeg BA600-115, can of worms.
I've got mains back on it and is in working order , now to try with high
power.)

This is my educated guess as to what happened at manufacture as absent but
distinctive 20mm long bolt not found around here. The 4 output devices
should be held to the heatsink via a cross-bar over all 4 of them and 2
bolts thru it into the heatsink. The insulators are ceramic and the 2
central ones, butted up together , do not clear the retaining bolts on their
outer edges. After graunching the thread the assembler decided to leave it
out and trust to luck one off-centre bolt would hold.
Coming to reassembly I found a 3mm screw for replacement but it would not
hold, as tapped thread is stripped, so I tapped that one hole out to 4mm.
Tried grinding a clearance notch on the side of one pad but got nowhere as
ceramic.
Not only that but I had no trouble holding the slab in fingers while trying
to grind a slot , it was barely getting warm - good thermal insulator or
small grinding wheel not generating heat as not cutting into the material ?
So ,lateral thinking, decided to grind down the screw thread where it
interferes with the ceramic , on one bolt.
I wonder if this was a one off at manufacture or a whole batch like this,
all that was needed was shift a tapped hole 1mm, plenty of room there for
that. Or one ceramic pad 1 or 2 mm narrower.

anyone use "chain mail glove" for small part in-hand grinding? At 80GBP and
upwards unlikely , firstly on cost, second need fingers for gripping items.
As an experiment wound some kevlar (ex fibre optic leads) around finger of
old glove and held in place with hot melt string. Simulated
grabbing/skittering of Dremmel and grinding disc into this on a piece of
dowel. It did not penetrate to the dowel, I expected the kevlar to snag and
stall the motor but cut clean through.

I would check that ! Its more likely that they are Beryllium_oxide !

The dust from grinding or abrading Beryllium_oxide is highly toxic !

Those ceramic insulators are made from beryllia (berylium oxide), a
ceramic that has a higher heat conductivity than aluminum. You should
be _extremely_ careful in handling them. Quoting from the Wikipedia
article: "Like all berylium compounds, BeO is carcinogenic and may
cause chronic beryllium disease. Once fired into solid form, it is
safe to handle as long as it is not subjected to any machining that
generates dust." Likewise the American Beryllia site says: "Exposure
to fine, airborne beryllium oxide powder or dust in sufficiently
large concentrations, may cause a lung disease in a small number
of hypersensitive people."

Grinding a beryllia insulator is considered exceptionally dangerous.

I once needed some microwave windows made of beryllia. I was going
to order beryllia blanks, have the edges sputtered in gold, and braze
them into 316 stainless waveguide sections. I called the engineers
at National Beryllia (now American Beryllia) to discuss this application.
In short order, they convinced me that they should manufacture the
windows as there was a chance that the differential thermal expansion
between the beryllia and the stainless steel waveguide could potentially
shatter the ceramic and release beryllia powder. After learning the
cost, I went with sapphire windows instead.

Some people are hypersensitive to beryllium compounds. If you are
not in the hospital yet, consider yourself _very_ lucky. A small
percentage of the population is so hypersensitive that the small
amount of dust you created could be lethal.

Insulating ceramics are not porcelain (vitrified kaolin clay)
but either alumina (white, very hard ceramic) or beryllia
(usually tinted pink or purple, and toxic if it's made to dust).

In neither case is it advisable to remachine the hole...

Greetings to all,

Once again stumped by a 'puter problem, as usual my hopes turn to SER
as my prospects starts looking rather hopeless.

Does anybody out there have some clues for getting into a password-
protected BIOS
On a 5 or 6 year old Jetway motherboard? Background follows:

I found it at the scrapyard a while back, and recently scored a
processor for it,
only to find that it's set up to boot from hard drive only. I can't
get in to change the
boot order since the BIOS is set to have a password.

It won't boot from a floppy, nor a cd, but will boot from a hard drive
that has DOS on
it, and also one that has Ubuntu on it, as well as the one that came
with it, which is
a 40 Gb drive that has, I think, Mandrake on it.

All I get when I boot with the 40 Gb one is a login prompt, but, not
having any login
info or passwords I can't really get any where by booting with it;
but, I can kind of
poke around in it's file-system if I boot with the drive that has
Ubuntu set as the
primary master.

I think it may be pretty well secured by IT pros, as it came in a
rack-mount enclosure with BarracudaNetworks logo and markings, and was
formerly used
as a spam firewall or some-such thing.

The main reason I'm hoping to turn it into a working system is it has
SATA onboard, and it's a step up in processing power (AMD 64) from the
P4- and AMD Athlon- boxes that are presently my 'daily drivers'.

In searching the web I've managed to secure the motherboard manual and
the latest
drivers and a BIOS update for it, but when I try to flash the bios
(it's Award bios
and I'm using the flash program from the Jetway site) it looks like
it's working until
the end, when it gives a message "flash rom is write-protected, make
sure all jumpers
is set to proper" or some such slightly mangled English, and I've
followed the
manual's instructions on clearing the cmos and I find no other jumpers
that deal with
write-protection. I also tried removing the battery for several days
and jumpering
where the battery contacts are, but I guess there must be some non-
volatile memory
somewhere that is defeating my efforts.

I've emailed Jetway a couple weeks ago, so far no response. I haven't
tried BarracudaNetworks, other than to poke around on their site, but
technical info there seems mostly about selling systems and not how
the systems work (except for IT speak, which I'm not very conversant
in).

It has the bios contained in a PLCC-32 package which fits into a
socket. I found some
pin-out info on the Winbond site:

APPnote 21 has a table, but not much in the way of instructions.

Sorry to be so long-winded, I've tried a couple other things but the

into DEBUG and supposedly change the values in some register that will
make the bios lose the password requirement - so far it hasn't worked,
don't know if I'm following the instructions correctly or not.

CmosPwd says it works for Award 4.5x/4.6x/6.0 - also look at their

6.0, I think - when I run it from DOS, cmospwd says something about be
sure
to use the numerical keypad, but I haven't yet figured out what or
when to do that...
as for the back door passwords, I've tried alot of 'em, but not all of
them in their
possible forms WRT caps, underscores, spaces, etc...But, I do still
wonder about
the keypad thing, and the numbers listed for version 6.0, I'll try a
few things next I
spend some time with it.

Have you tried this one for Jetway spooml

If removing the cmos battery did not work, the other place with
non-volatile memory is the RTC (clock) chip. Some of them have
internal battery so a momentary short is required across a couple of
pins to wipe the memory.

Thank you Arfa, great reply, full of good info. Don't know that I will
attempt the fix but at least I want to be sure it's not something I've
overlooked,like the hold switch set to on. In this case I guess these
things just wear out after awhile. Would you, or anyone, know of a
good repair shop to send these units to? And also, would you be able
to tell me about how much you guys used to charge for repairs. Hourly?

Any one know how to get a replacement battery for these cordless
headphones please? I called Sony and they told me that they are a
1-528-287-11. They then said that these have been replaced by the
152817971 which is alson apparently not available.

On further checking, they said they are in fact a triple A.

I cant figure out how on earth to put a triple A into these narrow
headphones

Anyone got any ideas please?
