I've seen some totally destroyed screens, and never saw anything leak out of them. Don't worry about the toxicity.

Thanks.

How much more use can I expect out of this?

I only need like 200 hrs over three months.

I got two refurb acer aspire ones in 2009, one had linpus, the other
Windows. This is the Windows one. After that, I can either replace the
screen or trash the whole thing. Fortunately, all my stuff is on the
removable SD card. I had an HP Aero 4/25 I was so comfy with and when it
died, It was a pain to rescue stuff.

Depends. It's like a car windshield. One good bounce and the crack spreads. With LCDs, you may sever an internal trace that will take out a significant portion of the image. If you can use it as is, try not to disturb it.

Alternatively, you can pick up a cheap monitor from a tag/yard sale or thrift shop and connect it to the laptop.

Replacing screens on an Aspire isn't a big deal. An independent shop
will do it for <$100. I've done it myself using service manual
instructions.

I bought mine as a refurb with minor screen damage and used it till
it fell off the back of the bike for the third time.- then replaced
the screen.

Visit Don Lancaster's web site.

He wrote some great books on TTL logic and made clear a lot of questions
I had about digital logic when I first started out, as I was never
formally trained in electronics servicing or Boolean Logic.

Note he has many free ebooks!
