Repaired another of thse endoscope things, just mechanical damage to the
metal barrel surrounded "S video" connectors used as small polarised 4 way
connections. Sticking a 20D/ 50 mm focal length lens over the lens cover
means you can focus down to a conventional 16 pin DIL package to read
script. Image is then linear x2 so fills the height of the LCD screen.

If you were to cut away the waterproof lens cover and picked at the weak
glue around the LEDs and lens carrier you could unscrew it , web cam
fashion, to focus closer.
Anyway given up on this one , come to conclusion half the vimicro is kaput.
Annoyingly about 40 MHz clock and 9 output lines from the CCD work with
plenty of signal variation to content of view variation. But CVBS output is
corrupt , absolutely no image content. There are 3 sync pulses and 2 colour
bursts per line interval. Tried removing EEPROM as no clock burst , just
apparently matching L to H with 2 or 3 negative pulses only, then staying
high, on (presumably) SDA and SCK pins. Removed EEPROM and same signal on
vimicro pins , but then no o/p signal at all. Replaced with an as found
24C04 and same nothing out.
Probably too much of a workup to descramble those 9 lines to give even just
a monochrome image

Today, I had occasion to look at a set top box for cable TV service. It's a
HDD recorder as well, employing what seems to be a standard computer disc
drive. When I came to screw the lid back on, I noticed on the back panel,
the words "Class 1 LED Product". What on earth do they mean by that ? I've
seen similar statements for laser-based products such as CD players or DVD
players / recorders, but in those cases, it is a warning. I'm not even sure
that this unit has any LEDs in it, so in this case, does the word "LED"
refer to something else ? What are Samsung (the makers of this box) trying
to tell (warn??) us of here ... ?

The Sony CDP101 was described in the manual as having a class IIIb laser.

Could it be compatible with fiber cable, bi-directional (and therefore
have a LED (laser)?

I think it's just a rewording of the old "Class 1 Laser" warning, with the
laser diode being the LED here. Probably a more accurate description,
really...

Well, yes, I suppose there is an *indicator* LED, but just the one, and it's
hidden behind a coloured insert in the front panel, that surrounds a button
assembly. I suppose if you are being really precise, there is a LED in the
Toslink socket on the back as well, but then just about every piece of
consumer electronics in existence now, has an indicator LED, and a Toslink
socket or two on the back, and I've never seen any other item carry a
similar statement about LEDs and classes. And to Mark, it's not a more
accurate statement regarding a semiconductor laser in this case, because
there's not one in it. No optical drive of any description. It's just a
cable set top box with an HDD in it for recording.

Hi!

That is what I think they're talking about. I've seen that warning in
some CD player owner's manuals, and every one of them had an optical
digital output.

This LED seems rather bright. I've noticed that it casts a bright
circle on the wall behind the player--yes, one of mine is missing the
dust cap. Maybe it's on the verge of being harmful if you were to look
into it or something?

LED Laser? Lost in the translation? I've seen some pretty weird

All valve. Intermitant cutting out.
Incidentally are the solder pads gold plated before soldering ?
No mention of PbF but appearance & paper & indent test hints at PbF. Crimps
adequte, switch functions ok, all solder points look good (for PbF) x5
inspection /tugging, preamp valve bases pass needle test. Other than
resolder most likely suspects , any known problem with these amps?

** The control pots on the front are absolute junk - one bump to any knob
and the pot back comes loose and easily result in intermittent sound.

Definitely PbF, resoldering the usual suspect points.
I realised I was using the wrong gauge of cut down sewing needle and 2 of
the preamp valve socket pins are highly suspect. Those glossy white ceramic
mounts with holes just bigger than the valve pins.

Time will tell but it's either a bug or a feature in ios4.

That push notification stuff came in with one of the 3.x updates, but like
you, never saw any useful using it, at least on the ipod touch. I had about
8 or 9 apps that had push in them but only one would randomly get a message.

But the behavior with the wifi when it's sleeping is changed with the 4 from
the 3.x stuff.

I noticed it because the router I use for the dsl has a separate "wireless"
light on it, comes on when someone is using wifi. We only have two wifi
devices, the wifes laptop and my iPod.

The morning after the ios4 came out I noticed first thing the light was on,
still on an hour later. Checked and her stuff was packed away, she was
sleeping. The ipod was in sleep mode.

I took a quick look at the local network map on the router and sure enough,
it showed the ipod active and on the wifi, nothing else. Turned it off, the
wifi light goes dark.

Hmmm.

Turning off the push stuff made things go back to the old behavior, ipod
sleeps, the wifi light stays off on the router. If it comes up once in a
while, I don't know, never noticed it.

Only thing I can figure is, with the 3.x if the ipod is sleeping, you just
wouldn't of received push notifications. Maybe now you do with the ios4.
Even with it sleeping, it keeps the wifi in a listening mode or something.

Hmmm. Your experience would seem to mirror mine then. I too noticed a lot of
wifi activity on my router, but I have all sorts of machines connected
wirelessly, and they are forever doing things in the background, so I never
took too much notice of it. Anyway, seems like we've both found the cause of
the problem, and the fact that it is dependant on apps that want to use the
facility, would possibly explain why some iPod Touches are suffering, and
some are not. My wife's is identical to mine, but she has not had the
problem since updating. I checked the Notifications on hers, and nothing
showed as wanting use of the facility. I shut it off anyway though, as she
is a bugger for downloading free games from the Apple store ... :-)

Argh. I installed iHound to send their server my location every 10
minutes. The default was 3 minutes. I left iHound running overnight.
The battery went from 97% to 32%. Ouch.

I don't think it's Notifications that are sucking the battery power.
Methinks the problem is leaving an application running that uses
notifications or just CPU cycles when the iPod Touch is in standby. I
usually display the desktop before turning off (actually standby)
mine, so I haven't had much experience with what an application can do
to the battery level if left running.

Pick up a cheap Xeltec programmer - even the older ones could handle
PAL/GAL ICs directly. The original SuperPro and later ones using the
parallel port are well under $150US.

I know other inexpensive Eprom programmers can also do the job. We have
five or so different manufacturers Eprom burners in our shop - a bit
redundant...

Hello all...

Thanks to everyone for the replies...

The new cap is installed properly. I made careful notes of how the old
one had been installed and the schematic is in agreement with my
notes.

I do believe the "E0" indication is some kind of error. But what it
means is a mystery, and the service manual does not help. I'm going to
ask TEAC, although so far they have not been helpful at all. The
output of the amplifier does not appear to be blocked--it is
amplifying this humming sound. It's not outputting DC to the speaker
connections.

Outside of the burned area, no traces on the board were ruined.

If I knew what E0 meant, I suppose it might be very helpful.

I may try pulling the cap (since the original was completely open
circuit, I doubt it can hurt) and seeing how the behavior changes.

Hi!

Just out of curiosity, how'd you dry the TV?

Water can hide in controls and components. If you didn't, I'd put the
opened TV in the sunlight for a while. The natural heat will drive
moisture out of the places where you can't see or directly dry it off.

Well, the circuit didn't fail and they weren't fire ants...but...

I had a massive ants nest show up in an Optimus STA-795 stereo
receiver. I noticed them moving around on the front panel, so I picked
it up and WOW! Ants were pouring out of the bottom of the unit. The
manual was underneath it, and they'd made some kind of a big white
thing on top of it. I don't recall exactly what I did to evict them,
but they never came back again.

If you would have just Google'd 'anteater saliva' you would have seen
that its saliva conforms to the RoHS directive.
