I have a Revox B225 which plays excellently for about four minutes,
then the sound stops and the CD spins up very fast and then stops.

The track display switches all the dots on, and although I can unload
the disc, nothing else will happen until I switch off for an hour or
so. I have replaced all the power supply caps and looked at the motor
speed control op-amp. I'm pretty sure it's a temperature-related fault,
but before I go wild with the freezer spray are there any common faults
with these decks that I shouyld be looking at?

TIA
Richard

I've seen bad pickups squeal (oscillate) before the spindle motor even
turns. Also, sometimes a spindle motor can set up a mechanical resonance
with the pickup and you can hear it whistle at a rate equal to the disc
rotation. You can even see the sine wave imposed on the focus and tracking
error waveforms. This seems to happen more on Sony's, though...

I know it is a silly question, but are you SURE that the hiss isn't
coming out of your amplifier?
(have you put a scope on the speaker lines or substituted either speaker
or amp?)

From your description, it isn't clear to me that you have eliminated the
'more obvious' possibility that your amplifier is putting out white
noise, perhaps intermittently varying in amplitude.

That surprises me. It's of course been a very long time ago, but I'm sure
that the early tube sets that I worked on, which employed a type PD500 shunt
stabilizer for the HV. had at least some crude form of x-ray protection, in
the form of sensing the beam current and using the result to back-bias the
H-out tube into cutoff. At 30kV on a 19" CRT, the average beam current must
have been well over the top, and fairly easily sensed as a fault condition ?
Perhaps they were just a bit more 'picky' about such things this side of the
pond ? :-)

So at what HV voltage do (did) TV sets start emitting X-rays?

Hi good Pals,
I'm working on an HP Deskjet 1280 printer the problem with
it is, after initializing, it I can (in most case) print a test page
from the printer but after the first print the cartridge will move to
the far right corner and make some rocking noise after which the first
two lights(the power and paper lights-green & amber light
respectively) will start blinking in unison. I have changed the two
cartridges but the problem is still there. When I try printing from
the PC I have the same problem with a "cartridge jam" message.
I have cleaned all the excess ink in the printer. Thanks.

Hi!

Your printer is most likely suffering from a belt that is slipping. There is
a tensioning spring that holds the belt tight, and after several years, it
tends to back off and allow the driving motor to skip a few teeth. This
throws the mechanism just far enough out of whack for the printer's own
onboard controller or the driver software to say "what?" and shut things
down. The blinking lights indicate this fault.

Sometimes, you might find that the sensing stripe (the piece of plastic
running along behind the carriage) is dirty. It can cause similar problems,
so make sure there is not a blob of ink on it. Be GENTLE when cleaning it.

And don't forget to check for any foreign objects that may really be
blocking the path of the carriage. Stuff happens...

William

Found in dumpster [w/remote].
Perfect picture.
Only reason for tossing seems to be failure of tuner [which is part of the
main board]. I can use fine in conjunction with a spare VCR as the tuner
but am curious if this is a common failure?
Also, the TV "feels" noticeably hot. Considerably hotter than my 19inch LCD
monitor. Is that common?
Thanks for any wisdom.
