Ah, a manners insult from the same person who posted these unprovoked
attacks on N. Cook.

"Cue N. Cook with nonsense about opening up cartridge and repairing open
winding ... or at least endless speculation about *why* it failed"

Yes Dave, belittling N. Cook for having an inquisitive and experimenter's
mindset. That's really 'good' manners huh?

And:

"But I recognize there are limits. N. Cook does not."

"Repair a lousy magnetic cartridge? Are you serious? I'll bet he would
actually get out his .5mm disc grinder if this equipment landed in his
"shop". Sheesh."

"Hey, he's free to broadcast the results of his bodgering here as much as
he likes. I'm free to ridicule him. See how that works?"

Once again Dave unprovoked, attacks M. Cook for being an experimenter
and being inquisitive. Good manners? Hardly.

It's Dave's 'do as I say (not as I do)' bizzaro-hypocrisy world.

Don't play the 'manners' card on me when you have none yourself.
Now again I urge you to fuck off.

It can be as simple as an open fuse (but it'll be a surface-mount
soldered
in fuse). It sounds like the charging circuitry isn't doing its job.
Look for
surfacemount MOSFETs that have failed if the fuse isn't the problem
(or if the fuse, when replaced, blows again).

Basically, look at the power handling discrete components (fuse, sense
resistor, PMOS switch transistors, etc.) near the battery connector.

No insult intended, but it sounds like this task might be beyond your
abilities. First most laptops are not easy to disassemble. You could
very well do more damage than good. If this computer is worth anything,
you might try to find someone who has some skill repairing electronic items.

It does sound like an electronic fault with the charging circutry if
youve tried a new battery. And you're way short of the skills to
diagnose and fix that.

Mains only laptops are pretty useful. If you had more skills I'd
mention adding a basic slow charger circuit, bypassing the dead fast
charger.

I've taken a few apart. What's more, I've put most of them back together again. ;-)

It's several years old and an "extra" laptop in the household. I doubt it would be economically worth trying to get repaired unless the cost is low enough.

I won't deny that it's probably beyond my skills. I was just hoping there might be something obvious that was within my ability.

The simplest and cheapest workaround for such problems is to buy on
eBay a "spares or repairs" machine that uses the same battery and hope
the charger circuitry still works. More elegantly, you can get
standalone chargers for some batteries, but the cost will be about the
same.

I reckon a resistor from power pack out to battery + fitted inside the
lappie would be simpler & cheaper. Charging would be very slow, but
quite workable if its not used a lot on battery.

I reckon a resistor from power pack out to battery + fitted inside the
lappie would be simpler & cheaper. Charging would be very slow, but
quite workable if its not used a lot on battery.

Even simpler would be to buy a rechargable battery of the same or close
voltage as the AC supply and fit it with the proper connector to plug the
battery into the AC charger slot. The battery could be recharged manually.

Some video distribution systems allow for "relayed" IR remote control,
from the viewing point back to the signal source (e.g. from a bedroom
TV, back to a DVR or VCR in the living room).

This generally requires an IR receiver at the viewing location, whose
output is then modulated onto a low-level RF signal that is mixed onto
the video distribution coax. At the "sending" end of the video signal
(e.g. living room) the RF signal is tapped out of the coax,
demodulated into a baseband signal, and used to drive an IR LED which
then is "seen" by the remote-control receiver on the device being
controlled. [A somewhat similar trick is used by the infamous X-10
"black pyramid" IR repeater systems, which do a similar IR->RF->IR
repeating trick over the air (and are so prone to pick up RF
interference that they don't work very well and can even block in-room
IR control signals).]

If you try to use this system with an RF distribution amplifier
in-line, it may or may not work, depending on the design of the
distribution amplifier. A simple "downstream-only" RF amplifier (e.g.
one based on a simple MMIC circuit) is likely to have rather high
rejection in the reverse direction - the modulated RF signal from the
IR repeater's receiver will be blocked when it hits the output of the
amp, and won't continue to travel back "upstream" to the source.

Whether it would work, would depend on several things, including the
specific RF frequency being used for IR repeating, and whether the
distribution amp has some sort of "bypass" circuit which allows this
particular frequency to "flow around" the amplifier without being
blocked (or amplified and fed back downstream, which would create a
feedback loop that would surely result in oscillation).

I'd guess that you'd need to buy an IR repeating system, and
amplifier, which were specifically designed to work together in this
way. Most off-the-shelf distribution amps are unidirectional and
probably do not have any sort of duplexing "bypass" circuit in their
design.

You can buy a "Powermid" transponder system for $27 postpaid on eBay. It's
RF, so you're probably limited to 30' or 40' feet, but that might be enough.

http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=powermid&_sacat=See-All-Categories

I use mine to control my SACD player, which sits to the side of and behind
the listening position, where the remote can't directly reach it.

PS: If you already own one... The best performance is /not/ always achieved
with the receiver antenna directly in line with the transmitter. I don't
know why.

No. I'm a compulsive repairman. Everything I see needs to be fixed.
If I can't fix it, it needs to be re-engineered. Everything can be
designed or built better. Spending my time on such efforts is not
particular profitable, but neither are most other hobbies. If I
wanted to get rich quick, it wouldn't be in the repair biz (unless I
was fixing something really expensive and exotic).

Any one can point me to a schematic or service manual for a dgtec hd7710
stb. (branded digitel hd4000)? Search engine seems to only want to give
me the power supply schematic for it.
