I've actually used rolled up cardboard and wrapped aluminium cooking
foil round it, folding the ends over to make contact surfaces. It
works quite well. I imagine that its current carrying capacity would
be quite low.

Actually a hacksaw and a short length of 0.5" or 13.0mm bar/rod cut to
2" or 51mm long would do !

Why do you need a lathe? Just use a piece of drill rod the right
length, and insulate it if there is any chance of a short in the holder.

It isn't expensive and comes in a lot of sizes:

You could get some scrap 6 AWG solid copper wire and wrap it with
paper to make it the right size, if you don't want to use steel.

A piece of wood dowel, two brass screws and a piece of wire run from
end to end is the traditional method.

My comment was intended more as "tongue-in-cheek" (I have a
friend that I *never* ask for things like this as he *would*
turn something on a lathe for me and I often end up embarassed
at the "excessive quality" of his solution! :> )

Some batteries (against which the "dummy" may mate) require
the little "nub" on the + end to ensure contact. Likewise,
some battery holders "guard" the + terminal with a bit of
raised plastic to protect against a battery installed backwards.
(i.e., a "flat surface" -- like the - terminal -- won't connect)

that could LEAK electrolyte.

Better to just cut a dowel to size,cut a slot for a wire from end to
end,fold over the ends,maybe epoxy in place.

Cheap,easy. follows the KISS principle.

By then I was working in Broadcast. I'll bet those bad delay lines
were made in Mexico. The capacitor in the early lines was a strip of
copper tape on the core, then a layer of insulation before the coil was
wound. One end was soldered to the ground lug.

Some company in Mexico was using a corrosive flux and not cleaning
the coils properly. When you saw an open coil there was usually a lot of
green where the wire opened. I saw several bad yokes with that failure
mode, just before I left for the Army and heard about a lot of similar
failures from that shop but never any delay lines. They worked mostly
on Zenith, RCA and Motorola, in that order. Some GE, Philco, Admiral
and Sylvania which were about 10% of the total. I repaired stereos & a
few TVs for the other people on base, and bought most of the parts
through the shop I had worked at rather than trying to deal with
wholesalers near a military base.

Sigh. NO. It could handle anything you threw at it. The two Vital
Industries system filled a six foot rack. The Squeeze Zoom was over
$250,000 and the video mixer & effects was around $150,000.

I've been trying to explain how it is done in a NTSC plant. You keep
trying to tell me it's wrong, since you've never used the equipment.
All a bigger plant means is more redundant equipment, but you insist on
pulling out a ruler and waving your dick. it was a single station, not
a network station. The only 'network' station was the AFRTS station in
Alaska and it still used mostly film, since some posts had no OTA TV, so
they had channel CATV systems or just ran the films in a small theater.
There were 12 locations in each group. Cases of film arrived in the mail
every few days. After they were run, they were mailed to the next
location, and finally back to AFRTS headquarters in Los Angeles. At one
time AFRTS was the largest network in the world. it was also the last
network to use mostly tube equipment, because a lot of their radio
stations were unmanned most of the time. Our radio station received the
Alaskan Forces Network over the 'White Alice' network. It was the
world's first Over The Horizon Microwave Relay telephone system. There
is a lot of information on line, you should read it.

You damned the station for having no video tape in the '70s. You
have no concept about how the military works. Film was reliable and
cheap. It didn't need much maintenance, or thousands of spare parts.

I think you are right about the manufacture of these parts in Mexico.
In 1971 RCA had a massive failure of their tube color chassis
(CTC38?), after a few months operation , of a color band pass coil.
The symptom was a loss of color sync and the reason for it was
internal corrosion and the coil was manufactured in Mexico. Chuck

I worked on a few CTC38 series after I served, and I wasn't impressed
by the design or the quality of the components. A few years later
Curtis Mathis was selling TVs with an identical design, and apparently
bought the tooling from RCA. A lot of them were dead, right out of the
carton. That was about the time I left TV repair for good, and moved to
idustrial electronics.

Perhaps I should explain the type of studio I'm used to. Each studio has a
production gallery, sound control, lighting/vision control and a camera
set up area. All separate rooms, but adjoining. Master control handles the
outputs of all the studios and routes that where required.

What you seem to be calling master sounds more akin to a studio gallery.

I'm looking for an identification for the plug that was intended to connect
to the A/V OUT connector shown in this auction on the right side of the Sony
GV-S50 combo VCR/LCD monitor.

A manufacturer's name for the connector, or the SONY cable part number would
be gratefully appreciated for my quest.

Item number: 300506088198

There is a fairly clear view of the connector, showing the 12-pin connector,
which has 8 pins in the bottom row, with 4 widely separated holes in the top
row (2 on each side).
The hole in the case beside the connector (r side) is not significant, as it
was for securing a rubbery dust flap/cover over the connector when not in
use.

The size of the A/V OUT connector is about the same size as a HDMI
connector, or similar to a USB connector, but a little wider.

The diameter of the plug/connector pins would be approx 24 wire gage.

Center step-feature/notch between the top 4 holes is for latching the plug
when connected.

Well, if it were "grounding", then banging on the case would have no
effect (unless there were some screws loose).

Incidentally, I tried my VX-5 turn on/off times. It took about 1
second to turn on, and the same to turn off. Pushing the button to
turn off was *NOT* instantaneous. I had to hold it for 1 sec. It's
been like that since new, so there's been no deterioration. At this
point, I don't know if it's a firmware issue, settings issue, or dirty
keyboard. Save, reset and reload seems the easiest to do first.

Something is getting warm perhaps?

Ouch. I've never even seen a tornado, so I have no idea what it might
be like. Raining golf balls sounds like no fun. Yes, Skywarn has its

From what I've read these radios, maybe the first batch had grounding
issues and the fix was to provide a better ground. If you have some time
google VX-5 grounding issue. I haven't done it yet so I can't post any
reference links.

Yeah by immediately I meant within a second. Compared to 10 sometimes 30
seconds to get it to come on it seemed pretty immediate to me :)

Another couple things; if the radio if left off for a couple days it
takes more button-play to get it to come on. Also when I charge it off
the cig lighter cord, the words 'now charging' appear and when done the
RX/TX light turns amber and 'charge complete' is displayed. This tells my
some micro processing is going one when the radio is off. I guess you
could call it a soft-off/soft-on. Obviously with a touch pad some standby
processing is needed to interpret the call for on. But without delving
into the operating theory it's hard to tell exactly but easy to guess.

The RF out device sinks on the back but I think the warming and expanding
of the radio in general creates a better ground for whatever is not
getting a good ground. The radio does not have to be transmitted, it can
just RX during this period and eventually the howl will stop. And the
howl is only on .70cm. This would indicate problems other than grounding.
Or not :) It's only a minor annoyance and I actually do a lot of SW QSX
on that radio and only use it moderately on VHF. And it's been doing the
howl for years. Neither the howl or delayed on are a big issue until
either interfere completely with the operation.

I urge non-hams to listen to skywarn on a scanner if they have one when
weather threatens. Anyone in Skywarn gets a text when watches/advisories
are put out by the NWS.

Hmm, tell that to all those folks who live "up the hill" from you off 17
whose houses perennially slip-slide away in the rainy season ...

But yeah, I guess apart from that, a few houses falling into the ocean
each year, and those houses that got blown up/burned up in San Bruno,
we're relatively disaster-free here.

Depends on how fried your eyes are! :>

I use:
- 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 diopter "illuminated reading glasses"
(depending on how close I need to work) for quick jobs
- a pair of prescription eyeglasses with a *pair* of
magnifying glasses that flip down on a ~3" arm for
a bit more involved work -- this has the advantage that
I can look up and read something in a book/monitor
without being forced to try to read *through* the
magnified image (but I have never encountered another
pair of these glasses so you'd have to resort to
something like a loupe that clips onto your existing
eyeglasses -- the problem is that most of those clip
on very *close* to your lenses)
- 0.7X to 30X (variable) stereoscope for more "involved"
work (e.g., inspecting *all* of the joints on a board)

I have found that adequate *light* is more important than
magnification (but that may just be the age of my eyes)
