Good on ya, and thanks for sharing that story, nicely done.

BTW, DeoxIt products by Caig Labs (even available at that Shack store) are
the ideal products for most of the low voltage switch contacts that anyone
is likely to encounter.

I prefer no to flood switching devices, but instead, apply the DeoxIT only
to the contacts when possible.
I transfer spray DeoxIt into small poly bottles that have "one drop" tips
(such as eye drops/Visine) then fit the tip with a needle (sharp point into
the bottle, not exposed) to use as a precise applicator. After
drilling/making a tiny hole in the hard cap, it can be installed for a
little more needle-tip stability.

Anglers may be familiar with small needle-tipped bottles that are used to
inject air into nightcrawlers to make them float/not drop to the bottom. The
tips are sharp, but were easily pulled out and inserted back into the bottle
tip with sharp point inward.

I see no inconsistencies.

"little girl" and the first instance of "she" would refer to the child who
owns the toy.

"his" would refer back to the Furby itself, anthropomorphizing it in the
male gender. So yes, "his owner" meaning the Furby's owner, again meaning
the little girl.

The second instance of "she" would refer to the Mommy with the drawer of
batteries.

Well, according to Wikipedia, there were 40 million Furby's sold. I'll
assume that half were sold in the USA. The 0-14 year old population
is about 30 million, resulting in fairly good chance that almost every
brat you know has a Furby buried somewhere under the toy pile. Your
only safe option is to avoid crying little girls and their desperate
parents.

After than computer crime, fixing toys does tend to be rewarding.
Unfortunately, most toys are designed to be assembled, not
disassembled or repaired. If the challenge is your forte, you found
it.

All too often, the neighborhood brats dump their machines on my
doorstep with scribbled instructions to fix the bike or they'll slash
my car tires. Seems like a fair exchange. Since I have this
masochistic urge to fix anything, I usually perform the necessary
bicycle repairs. In gratitude, they ride off yelling "see ya".
Methinks Furby repair would be easier and more gratifying.

All batteries not in their original shrink wrap, customer proof,
bubble packaging, are presumed to be dead. "Shelf Life" is somewhat
of an oxymoron as no batteries sitting on the shelf are ever found to
be usable.

Incidentally, my rule of thumb is "if it moves, it breaks".
Unfortunately, almost everything inside the Furby moves, so there's
plenty of room for failures.

I haven't seen a hot/warm CFL burst (yet), but I've had 3 of 'em start to
strobe, and then the glass spiral tubes got very hot, and may have broken by
themselves, but I was present each time, and shut them off.

I'm no specialist, but spilling cold mercury may not be the same as
releasing hot mercury vapor.. although I'm fairly certain that avoiding
either exposure is a good idea.

And as was mentioned, long tubes weren't ever scrutinized as much, and look
how many decades they have been used in massive quantities.
Also, I believe that mercury was present in early latex paints, intended to
replace the lead paints as a safer solution.

Liquid mercury is not terribly hazardous, the problem is with
vaporized mercury such as found in CFLs.

CFLs get used in places that long tubes aren't - trouble lights, etc -
and they are rarely in a fixture that provides some type of cover,
which is usually the case with a long tube fixure in living or office
areas. Workshops and warehouses can be exceptions, depending on their
age.

My concern is making the cleanup of tiny glass shards easier - don't
want one of the grandkids to run barefoot through the garage and wind
up with glass in her foot. The potential mercury containment is just
a side benefit. On the other hand, a damaged but bagged CFL will
probably be accepted at your local CFL recycler.

Good to know you're keeping up on stuff. There are different results with
different statins, but I quit taking them myself.

My brother had hepatitis C for 35 years and was diabetic as well, but even
though they kept an eye on his liver enzymes, the cancer was only diagnosed
after he had been complaining of swelling and bloating for a few months. By
then it was too late. The back pain was probably an early symptom, but he
had already had back problems, so they were looking at that as an isolated
problem.
Seems like a CAT scan every few years, when he had known risk factors, would
have been appropriate. Damn insurance companies...

I have low-option HMO insurance, with all kinds of deductibles and co-pays,
and it still costs me and my wife over 16,000 per year. Went up 22% the
instant Obamacare passed. Not going to be able to keep it up. I don't care
about any mandate. I'm dropping the insurance, and changing my focus from
health insurance to asset protection for when I have to declare bankruptcy
the first time one of us gets really sick.

You don't have to answer the question, but are you Jewish? If not, was any
of your (or your wife's) grandparents Jewish?

Depsite what Jeff said about Israel in the 1970's, it's actually a booming
hi-tech country, with full socialized medical care. Instead of the doomed
national health plan they use in the UK, here the goverment collects a
"health tax" and pays for an HMO (there are 4).

The minimum coverage is regulated by law, and each HMO tries to offer better
coverage to compete. Since basic coverage is universal, there are many options
for low cost extra insurance if you want it.

New immigrants and returning citizens get into the system with pre-existing
conditions covered.

If you emigrate and don't work (for example, live off your savings, or other
assitance), the State of Israel pays your first year premiums. If you start
working before then, you pay the health tax like everyone else.

No. My friend lives in a small apartment and does everything on his
desk. It's a huge mess, full of tools, parts, junk, and debris. He
doesn't know exactly what shorted the terminals, because the battery
bounced around the desk.

I don't know. I know that the cheap carbon-zinc 9V batteries do not
have cells, but I suspect that the others qualify. I've torn apart a
few others and found AAAA cells. There are many web pages and You
Tube videos that show what's inside.

Actually, they're not quite AAAA cells but are about 1mm shorter. I
had to put a blob of solder on the + terminal to make up the missing
length.

I'm borrowing a green laser that uses two AA batteries. Much cheaper
to operate and lasts much longer. We were comparing green lasers (for
dish antenna alignment) at the last radio club meeting. All present
were allegedly 5mw green lasers, but there was a HUGE difference in
brightness when pointed at the wall. The one I'm borrowing was the
brightest. Everyone complained that they killed batteries quite
rapidly. One of them would drastically reduce brightness after about
10 seconds. All of them got hot.

The problem seems to be that after all this dialogue, that so many of
the responders simply don't stick to the basic premise that different
phases by definition have timing differences. Simply reversing the way
of using a phase does not make it a different phase. The timing stays
the same.

If one uses an oscillioscope to view the phase it can be readily
reversed to appear as another when it is not. We connect windings in
the power transformer that feeds our residence to get the desired
result, 120 or 240 and connect the common point to accomplish another
desired result. Safety. Also the ungrounded winding would be floating
about a possible potential of several thousand volts and be a real
hazard should there be a problem in any of the many devises connected
to the secondary. Including the two seconday windings. And yes there
are two identical secondary windings. If there were not our electric
bills would at least double. Lots of folks would die and lots of
devises would be hazardous to all. Thus the emphasis on proper
grounding in the interests of public welfare. But this is another
subject.

When putting power to the TV , got a blinking power LED every second.

Here is what I did ;

-unplug the TV
-Press VOL- and INPUT at the same time
-Plug TV

TV turned ON with a LK on the screen.

When turning off with power button , POWER & OPC Led blinked 2 times
togheter and power led blinked 3 times alone .

What does this code mean ?

Unplug, wait 30 seconds. Press and hold power button on tv. Plug the tv
in, count to ten then release power button. Then turn the tv on. Let me
know what happens.

Anybody know a source for T1 1/4 wire base bulbs (NOT LEDs) with blue
tint? Trying to replace the lights on the HVAC controls for a 2005
Caravan. Dealer claims they are unserviceable, and wants to sell me a
whole new pod for hundreds of dollars. I have already replaced them with
T1's (too small) after buying T1 3/4 that were too big (I feel like
Goldilocks), but the T1s are too short, and the blue condoms make them
too dim. I am aware of McMaster-Carr and Allied- that is where I wasted
my money on the first two tries, for the condoms and bulbs respectively.
Allied has clear bulbs in the right size (now that dummy me figured out
what the size is), but not the tinted ones.

And yes, I already tried rec.autos.tech.
