The author of one of the links I previously mentioned uses
AGS Extra Fine Graphite

I have a small 4 oz bottle of graphite in the office I got from an
auto body shop. They use it for lubing window and lock mechanisms in
the door. It seems like a lifetime supply.

Doing some more reading, it appears that only some lock lube uses
spherical particles. Most of the cheap stuff is flake, so I guess
it's probably acceptable to use.

There is conductive paint for just this purpose at electronics stores.
Ford Electronics in Fullerton, CA had some. I saw it there. I think
they ship.

FWIW I tried the aluminum foil glued on, I didn't have 100% success.
Since I wanted a 100% working remote control any less than 100% is
failure. I haven't tried the paint.

You left out 3.5. The I and Q primaries' color and bandwidth are
based on
how the eye actually perceives color. NTSC not only transmits
more color
information, but uses the available bandwidth more effectively.

Actually, most early sets (at least RCA) had full-bandwidth
color. RCA
continued to offer such sets for two or three years. I suspect
many current
sets using digital processing are full-bandwidth, but there's no
easy way to

which runs up

Oh? Why?

1) They were stuck with the smaller color gamut because of the
color primary choices used in the encoding.
2) They could not use wide bandwidth decoders because the chroma
encoding was equal bandwidth.
3) Comb filtering in PAL is not nearly as effective since the
chroma components are 'smeared' out rather than tightly
interleaved between the main luminance components. The phase
alteration and the 25 Hz offset of the chroma carrier in PAL
(look up Hannover bars) kills the effective use of comb filters.

Your point 3.5 is well taken. Regarding the second delay line,
the extra delay needed in the I channel was just a simple lumped
component all pass filter that could be fabricated at very low
cost. I also remember the time when early VCRs actually included
the NTSC pre-distortion phase compensator that was part of the
broadcast standard to compensate for the nonlinear delay of the
IF stages in the receivers. The theory was that you pay only once
in the broadcast encoder rather than in every TV set. I actually
bought a few of these on the replacement part market to use in
other video projects for about $1.00 each. It was a passive
module with three leads containing a few inductors and
capacitors. I installed one in a RF modulator I had and they sure
eliminated the chroma smear and sharpened up the luminance. It is
interesting that even with SAW IF filters which could have been
made with uniform group delay, they are fabricated to reproduce
the delay characteristics of the older tuned inductor-transformer
IF amplifiers.

Never heard of Hanover bars. (Though I've lived in PA, I've never been in
any, either.) I didn't realize PAL had this basic problem.

Which is one of the problems with SECAM. Transmitting only one color signal
per line simplifies encoding and recording (at the studio) at the expense of
a more-expensive receiver.

This, also, is new to me. I'd always assumed there was no correction in one
part of the system for errors in another.

No. Sky doesn't broadcast terrestrial signals in the UK. Satellite and
cable only.

Terrestrial digital started in '98 with a consortium including the BBC and

Digital was in addition to the UHF PAL service - with it carrying all the
same channels and more.

PAL has nothing to do with any digital transmission. Some of the
originating sources may still have been PAL at some point though.
STBs had a PAL output for use with sets with no line input.

That applies to any STB. What goes in is irrelevant provided it will
interface with the domestic TV.

when I was at TEK,I used to have a chart with all the worlds TV systems,and
their differences.
I tossed all that stuff when I was laid off,didn't have room for all the
stuff I'd have kept if I could. I repaired and calibrated TEK NTSC and PAL
video test equipment.I did a little bit of digital video,and -one- SECAM
unit,so I won't claim any expertise with SECAM.

Not clear how the strobe improves on the flash of light you get from the
shutter in the projector???
You're trying to sync the film, the flash and the scanner.
I'd just use a standard mechanical shutter and a photocell,
to sense the already-synchronized light flash to control
the projector speed...all PLL'd to the scanner acquisition rate.
That'd allow simple phase control.

If you're not working on the digitizer, most of your problems will be
with synchronization. You're gonna want a DC coupled scope with STABLE
DC coupled triggering to work at low frame rates. That takes soundcard
acquisition off the table.

One problem with using off-the-shelf projectors, as he has been doing
for many years, is duty cycle. They aren't meant to run all day long,
especially at double speed, as he does to improve throughput. The
pull-down claw mechanism in particular takes a beating, and with beat-up
decades-old film a lot of the sprocket holes are chewed up already; the
resultant "jump" is something he wants to take out of the finished
product. Keeping the film rolling at a constant speed instead of
starting and stopping it 30 times per second has its advantages.

I'm not understanding this. If it's a strobe, why would you need the
mechanical shutter? The camera has its own shutter.

The point was, ditch the strobe.

I know zip about this, beyond the 15 minutes I spent googling and
two hours thinking about it...but I never let incompetence stop me
from pontificating...

I just picked some round numbers to make the math easy, but it scales
for whatever real numbers you're using.

At 50 FPS, you have 20ms per frame. If you use 1000 pixels acquisition
and you want to keep the image smear to one pixel, you have 20us flash
duration
at 1000X intensity. Assuming your digitizer can handle that level of
peak intensity and behave linearly, all you have left to worry about
is synchronizing a mechanical system with the video detector and the
flash. If there's 10mm between frames, all you need is 10um mechanical
stability in the film transport mechanism from frame to frame.

Much easier if you can tolerate lower resolution and lots of image smear.

No need to make the electronics any more capable than the weakest link.

Also, your light source may not have been designed to run at 50Hz.
forever. About 40 years ago, a guy at Tektronix did an experiment
where he tested transistors under pulsed conditions. Turned out that
at the rates we're talking about, you get full excursion of junction
temperature and the life of devices was significantly reduced.
That was a long time ago, and there are a LOT of variables.
Dunno if it still applies to current devices.

a scope's input-Z and circuit loading is known and minimal
(1 MegR,~20-40pf),where a soundcard will have a much lower Z and more
circuit loading. Newbies will not be aware of such loading effects.

I'd go for a TEK low end LCD scope,for a new model. TDS2200?

for a beginner on a tight budget,maybe a T922/T932/T935,those can be had
very inexpensively,are simple to operate.

You could also just buy a DC-DC converter.. 24:12 at 200W will run
around $170, in stock at Mouser.

Looks expensive compared to the raw components, perhaps, but I'll bet
most parts for your truck cost more than that.

There's enough adjustment range that you can set it to 13.8VDC or
whatever you think should be nominal. It will also run the lights at
full brightness with the motor off (at the expense of some battery
life, of course).

If I follow the story correctly, your dead battery was originally
purchased as a "spare". Ergo you had the subject UPS at that time or
shortly thereafter. Is there any reason you haven't gone with the
logical YYMMDD interpretation of the BB date?

IMOE the main issue with using "standard" (as opposed to high rate)
batteries in a UPS is they are being operated outside their design
envelope at any decent proportion of UPS load capability - which in
your case *may* be irrelevant. I have seen standard batteries'
deliverable capacity deteriorate after a handful of serious
discharges in UPS duty, and the HR units haven't exhibited this. One
thing I haven't actually done is measure temp rise in the battery
after a full load discharge to cutoff - THAT would be a telling
comparison.

We always reload SLA/VRLA-based UPS with HR batteries.
