Thanks for your comments, Grant. A friend brought me this charger that he
intended to use for maintaining/trickle charging a 24V forklift battery
(approx 1500 lbs battery).

The forklift sits idle for extended periods, and then is needed to be used
just as a lift.. not using the traction motor for moving heavy loads around.
The trouble with this particular charger is that it shuts off and doesn't
restart without manually being restarted.

Since the control circuit is about 25 years old now, I thought it would be
best to replace the controller, to avoid other issues which could arise from
the aged components.

I've seen circuits with a few components and a zener diode that can control
a relay for a charging circuit capable of maintaining lead acid batteries,
but I was more interested in just buying a control circuit to install into
the charger, if someone could recommend a module.

Get a regular 24 hour mechanical clock timer and use it to power a
relay whose contact is in parallel with the push-on start contact on
the power supply. Set the timer for the minimum possible on time,
usually 15 minutes per day. That will start the power supply once
each day and that should kep the batteries charged just fine. Simple
solutions for simple problems!!!

Thanks for the additional info, Jeff. I'd been wondering if you still
checked in to see what's up on SER.
I haven't seen many of the SER regulars of years ago, still here.

I thought I'd try operating the amp on 2 new tubes, if it can be, and save
the original RCAs for resale value when I'm ready to sell the amp.

I don't have speakers with high power capability right now, so the maximum
power of the amp isn't needed. I can buy a used 50-60W combo amp for what a
couple of boxed speakers would likely cost.

From their replacement ad "cures the ink spots/streaks problem" on this
particular screen, it seems to be a common problem. I'll have to look
around the US for a dealer.

Arfa, here is a little free (donate if you wish) program that will show you
all the stuff that runs upon system start.
It may find more than what msconfig indicates. It is always surprising how
much stuff wants to suck up your RAM without your explicit permission.

Download Autoruns and Process Explorer. Scroll down the page on the
right.

Those are just two tools in the arsenal I use when I'm out on a trouble
call. They are very useful at tracking down your sort of problem.

You have to be careful of some of these other suggestions. I don't trust
many of them, only what M$ Technet approves. Learned my lesson a long
time ago in the 90's.

Like Meat Plow, I also find great value in the sysinternals tools.
Autoruns and Process Explorer are definitely in order if you can't
find your memory hog using the built-in utilities.

Autoruns is like a turbocharged MSCONFIG and Process Explorer is like
a turbocharged Task Manager.

It would also be a good idea to take a look in the event viewer and
see if there are a gazillion events from something going haywire, most
likely in the System or Application logs.

Not to start pointing fingers prematurely, but reviewing your original
post reminded me that I've seen some pretty "unexpected results" come
from both Google Desktop and Weatherbug, even though they behave fine
for some people.

I'm curious to see what Task Mgr says.

2GB is about the minimum I would use for Windoze 7 64 bit. If the
machine and your budget can handle it, try installing 4GB total. Also,
with twice as much RAM, it will take twice as long before it crashes.

Be specific. Some mutations of Thunderbird had memory leak problem.
<https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems>
If your weather monitor is Weatherbug, I vaguely recall additional
memory leak problems. What program are you using for
anti-virus/spyware? Microsoft Security Essentials had a really minor
memory leak that was allegedly fixed in the latest 2.0.xxx release.

>But over the course of a few

Classic memory leak. Some application is probably the culprit.
Monitor the memory usage and kill off running programs until you
identify the source of the memory leak. Going from 35% of 2GB to 75%
is a change of 40% of 2GB or 800MBytes change. Over a 3 day period,
that 11MBytes per hour or 183KBytes/minute. That's not a memory leak.
That's a program gone insane that should be exterminated from your
machine. You should be able to see that much memory loss visually,
using Task Manager, one of the numerous Windoze Widgets, or some
program that shows available memory.

Memory defragmenters and cleaners don't do anything useful. Cleaning
the heap and other junk left in RAM doesn't stay around long enough
for any program to even detect misused RAM, much less doing anything
to expedite their removal.

>I'm not really au fait enough with the

Sigh. I once tried a RAM defrag program and was amazed at how much
available memory it was able to free. I eventually figured out what
it was doing. When it started, it would allocate a huge block of RAM
for scratch space. When it was done, it would magically free this
memory, claiming that it was salvage from program garbage collections.
Yep, it did, but the program the created the garbage was the RAM
defrag program.

>But even
>that one seems unable to recover the situation beyond about 75% usage. The

I help maintain a fairly reliable Windoze 7 machine that's up and
playing SNMP network monitor:

C:\> systeminfo | find "System Up Time"
System Up Time: 13 Days, 4 Hours, 58 Minutes, 27 Seconds

Virtual Memory: Max Size: 2,048 MB
Virtual Memory: Available: 1,996 MB
Virtual Memory: In Use: 52 MB
Page File Location(s): C:\pagefile.sys

No sign of any memory leaks. It normally stays up longer, but
everyone has been playing with updates and revisions, so the uptime
tends to be more than about 2 weeks.

>So, is this just a poor characteristic of 7 that previous versions of
>Windoze didn't suffer from ?

It's probably NOT Windoze 7. It's probably some application that
you're running. Download and install Belarc Advisor (free version)
and produce (don't post) a system report. Look down the list of
installed applications for a likely culprit for producing a memory
leak.
<http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html>

>Does anyone else have a similar problem, or
>have found a way to resolve it ?

No problems, but if you want reliability, I suggest Ubuntu or one of
the other Linux distributions. If you're running a fairly basic set
of applications (Web, email, word processor, spreadsheet, etc), then
Linux will be a suitable replacement. If you run a bizarre mix of
eclectic utilities and apps, stay with Windoze 7. OS/X on a Mac is
also a good substitute, but will cost about twice as much as the
equivalent PC. Retraining your son on a new operating system might
also be useful, as it will keep him occupied and out of your workspace
for a few weeks.

>Not looking for a long drawn-out discussion

Well, if you want a one-line answer, you could at least have warned me
or supplied a one-line question. Grumble.

>Just interested to see if anyone better
>qualified at this sort of thing than me, has a definitive answer.

I do this kind of stuff every day. I only see broken computers. I'm
sure there are users out there that have perfectly working machines,
but I never see them. That's the curse of being in the repair/support
biz. Also, if Microsoft ever produced a reliable product, I would be
out of business. The company motto is "If this stuff worked, you
wouldn't need me". It's on my biz card and all my stationary. Nobody
has ever disagreed (or cared).

That's the catch, of course. Operating systems other than Windows or
Macintosh don't have fancy software written for them.

Perhaps, but I run W2K, Word, and other Windows software without problems. I
do agree, however, that Windows sometimes behaves Most Strangely, for no
obvious reason.

Monitor the battery voltage with the unit unplugged from the 120V wall/
floor outlet. Then plug it in and turn it on. If there is any
charging going to the batteries, the voltage should show some sort of
an increase, say from 13.2 to 13.5V, at a minimum. Most lead-acid 12V
or 2 x 6V batteries should go up to around 14V when charging at a
medium to high rate. If you don't see the increase in voltage, then
you must check out the charging circuit. Have you contacted the
manufacturer and asked for a circuit diagram. That should really be
your first move.

THANKS, Sylvia, and thanks to each of you who took the time to try to
help me.

Good call on the flashing light = unit off = bad switch. Problem
solved.

It looks like a typical SPDT slide switch. As I was preparing a state
table of the switch leads to show you all, I thought how unusual it
was that the continuity toggled normally between the "left" and center
poles when the switch was moved, but between the "right" and center
poles it was always open. So I started monkeying around with the
switch and sure enough, at one point I got it just right and got
continuity between the "right" and center. I hooked everything up and
got a green AC indicator with no flashing yellow, just like we wanted.
I plugged in a small load and killed the input power and voila,
battery backup!

I flipped the switch back and forth a bunch of times and now it
actually seems to be working pretty consistently, so at least for the
time being I'm not even going to replace it. If it screws up again it
will be first on the hit list.

I'm glad it turned out to be the switch because the way the board and
components are laid out, I was getting nowhere on tracking the
connections from the switch.

This solved two problems for me:

1) The dead UPS.

2) The dead UPS has been in pieces on my kitchen table since October
and I have parts for a new PC hopefully coming tomorrow, so I needed
to make room for that project.

THANKS AGAIN,
-Marty

Hello,

I have a used ADCOM GCD-700 5 disk CD player that was given to me and it is
overly sensitive to vibrations, bumps and slight scratches on the CDs. I've
mounted it on vibration absorbing rubber and this has greatly impoved its
bump and vibration sensitivity, but it is still very sensitive to the
slightest mark or scratch on cds. How can I cure this.

thanks in advance,

Shaun

Shaun,

If this machine is as old as I think it is, then its not worth putting
any serious money into it. There is likely a manufacturing date on the
machine that will give the month and year it was made. Make sure if
there are any transit screws on the bottom they are removed or in the
released position.

You could try cleaning the lens and the disc platter. You'd have to
open the machine to do this. the lens is about the size of a pencil
eraser, and is on a suspension, so be gentle with it. I use a cotton
swab moistened with lens cleaning fluid, though Windex will probably do.
I also clean off the platter that the disc sits on while spinning.
I've seen enough debris build up on the platter over time that it no
longer lets the disc sit flat, and that can cause all kinds of grief.
Again, a moistened swab or slightly damp cloth is all you need to clean it.

Beyond that, you are likely to have a worn out laser, which is likely
to be more expensive to replace than the machine is worth.

Tim Schwartz

First, clean out any crud from the laser head assembly. If that
doesn't improve things, replace it. That's a 1997 vintage machine so
parts may be tricky to find... Oh, too easy:
<http://www.adcomparts.com/part.php?item=46001400>
However, I don't think it's worth $50 to fix something that old.

This CD player is a higher quality model and one of the only multidisk units
that uses high quality components. Mechanically it's not made very well
though, but the electronic audio stages are all class A, so it's worth my
time and some money to try to fix it.

Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for the links, I'll probably order a new laser head for it, but first
I'll lake it apart and clean the lenses.

KSS240A lasers should be available from many sources for much less than $50.
This is a very 'bog-standard' laser made by Sony, and used in many
manufacturers' products over the years, as well as their own. Try to make
sure if you get one from a cheaper source, that it is a genuine Sony one
though. Of all of the KSS series replacement lasers, I've found the '240 to
be probably the most critical, when used in most manufacturers' machines.
