We had a nice 2004 vintage Sharp set that failed about a year back.
Intermittent, wouldn't turn on sometimes but would other times.
had a fast look inside and saw corrosion around one of the IC's.
(looked like the CPU).

The set only just fit into the wheely bin, but it did fit. Saved a
trip out to the (isolated) main road to leave it for someone to take
home.

I've bitten the bullet, and bought a new television.

Still, I'm puzzled by the failure in the old one. The transistor has
clearly failed, as far as I can see. Removing the small inductor
mentioned above stops the clicking noise, which is consistent with there
no longer being a short across the SMPS.

I'd have expected the set to now turn on and produce sound. But it doesn't.

The SMPS uses a quasi-resonant circuit, and disconnecting the inductor
has a side effect of removing the feedback for the SMPS. But on my,
admittedly limited, understanding of such circuits, it should still work.

** You need a " Power Transistor Tester" - published as a full construction
article in EA magazine back in May of 1988 by me. Altronics and Jaycar had
kits for it at one time.

It will reasonably accurately test the beta (or Hfe) of any power transistor
OR power Darlington pair OR horizontal deflection transistor. Very cheap
to make - uses only a few passives, a couple of red LEDs and a WW pot.

No PCB was used as it take only minutes to wire up the bits once they are
all fitted into a small jiffy box.

It will also allow close matching ( ie Vbe match) of groups of power
transistors that must operate in parallel.

Requires an external 12 volt DC source.

I would post the schem on ABSE, but like so many others I no longer have
access to the site.

How about eBay for same/similar handsets? If you get lucky it could be
less $$ than the parts!

Anyone successfully salvaged that expensive 3M anistotrpic conductive tape?
hot air , is that effective to dislodge the bond but not melt the
tape/destroy the anisotropy?
I just measured a standard size zebra and that had .2mm spacing, I could not
find my tin of watch bits, what is the spacing on those zebras?

http://www.rockdalecitizen.com/news/headlines/Two_arrested_in_childs_death_117657923.html

CONYERS — The mother and her boyfriend of a 3-year-old child are facing
murder and child cruelty charges in the recent shaking death of the toddler.

Conyers Police arrested Raul Solis, 20, and Yaneth DeLaCruz Alvarez, 21,
both of 1162 Oak Villas Court on March 8. Solis, the mother's boyfriend,
faces charges of felony murder and first-degree cruelty to children.
Alvarez, the mother, faces charges of second-degree cruelty to children.

Police Chief Gene Wilson and criminal investigations division commander
Lt. Jackie Dunn answered questions during a press conference Wednesday
afternoon.

Wilson said the charges stemmed from the death Sunday of 3-year-old Edna
Figueroa, Alvarez's daughter. Alvarez, along with her boyfriend, took
the girl to Rockdale Medical Center emergency room Saturday after the
girl was reportedly unconscious and unresponsive. The girl was taken to
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egelston where she died.

"It was determined there that she had severe brain damage," Wilson said.
"She was put on life support and throughout the evening and into the
next day there were tests run and it was determined she was, in fact,
brain dead and the decision was made to take her off life support."

Autopsy and several witness statements led police to take warrants out
for Solis and Alvarez.

Solis reportedly admitted to shaking the little girl, as a means of
discipline for misbehaving. But he did not know he caused injury.

Investigators think the injury occurred about 10 a.m., according to
Dunn, and Alvarez and Solis likely discovered the child laying on the
floor about 1 or 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5. The little girl and her four
brothers, ages 5, 3 and 1, were reportedly unsupervised for about four
hours. During part of that four hours, police think the victim was
suffering brain hemorrhages from the shaking.

The mother was originally going to also be charged with murder.

"From our evidence and from our interviews, we feel like her part of
this was the fact that she just did not check on the children in that
four-hour period," Wilson said. "And that four-hour period was critical
to Edna."

Wilson said Solis was a legal resident and Alvarez was not. They have
one child together and have been living together for about a year and a
half.

Alvarez was arrested in 2004 for driving without a license. Solis was
arrested for human trafficking and identification issues in the past.

"He explained that he was arrested in Texas for smuggling illegal aliens
from Mexico into the United States," Dunn said.

Conyers Police had not responded to the home before. But Wilson said
investigators learned the victim tested positive for cocaine when she
was born and was taken away from the mother by Child Protective Services
in Texas. The little girl was returned to her mother in January.

The rest of the children are now in the custody of the Georgia
Department of Children and Family Services.

Solis and Alvarez are being held in Rockdale County Jail, awaiting a
bond hearing. They were taken to a custody hearing this morning in
Juvenile Court, relating to Texas Child Protective Services wanting to
take the other three children into custody.

Edna Figueroa, the victim, would have turned 4 years old on Thursday,
March 17.

I see that no one bit on your duplicate post on
news:sci.electronics.design Yup, not a single reply. Not surprised.

Most designs don't have enough spare flash for any diagnostics. It
isn't worth the trouble for anything outside a factory where an
automated test fixture can test the entire board without being
reprogrammed. Not what you want to hear, but it's the truth. The
'boundary' stops at the I/O pins where it was intended to. It was a way
to test a complex processor with limited tools, not an entire board.

I am guessing that the up-front costs for field service cannot be justified
(sold to management). Other than flash upgrades, it appears to be an
unfulfilled promise (pipe dream?) as far as field service is concerned.

Thanks.

HAYWARD -- A fast-food restaurant in the Fairway Park shopping center
was held up by a pair of gunmen who forced eight terrified employees to
the ground before making off with cash from the manager's office around
10:15 p.m. Thursday, police said.

The men entered the Taco Bell-KFC on Mission Boulevard and forced
employees -- one who was off duty and picking up a paycheck -- to the
ground, some physically. A dishwasher had a gun thrust against her neck,
while a juvenile who tried to run slipped on the freshly mopped floor
and struck his head while falling to the ground.

Police said the duo was yelling orders and urging each other to get out
quickly.

They might have been driving a blue Honda Civic that pulled up to the
restaurant shortly before it was robbed, with an occupant of the car
asking if it was a slow night.

One robber was described as black, 18 to 20 years old, 5 foot 6 and 150
pounds, wearing a black mask with a skeletal design, a black hooded
sweatshirt, dark pants and black gloves.

The other was said to be black, in his mid-20s, 5 foot 9 with a medium
build, wearing a black ski mask, dark jacket and dark gloves.

Police are investigating whether another holdup minutes earlier by a
masked gunman at an Industrial Boulevard motel is related. In that case,
a single gunman leaped over the counter, demanding the clerk open the safe.

She said she didn't know how to open the safe, and the man took money
from the register and fled.
