Yes.

Visual inspection is not enough. You need an ESR meter.

Maybe not; the ESR issues crop up mainly in high-performance
low voltage power supplies (like computers); the vertical
sweep circuit doesn't need a low-ESR capacitor. It will
take (and work well with) just about any capacitor with
adequate voltage rating and capacity.

The capacitor is inexpensive; just replace it with a new one,
don't bother with testing the old unit.

I think you are missing the point of what he was saying regarding ESR. This
parameter is a valid test of the 'goodness' of any electrolytic capacitor,
regardless of its ESR pedigree. Even 'normal' electrolytics have a
relatively low ESR when they are properly functional. As they fail, that
figure will increase, and that is readily spotted with an ESR meter. As to
the OP's actual problem, whilst bad joints in vertical output stages in CRT
televisions were common, this more often lead to initially intermittent, and
finally permanent frame collapse, than geometry problems like foldover,
which the OP said was the problem he had. My money would be 100% on it being
a bad cap, or possibly the feed resistor to the output IC having gone high.
This was also a relatively common problem on many chassis, and could cause a
severe foldover, usually at the bottom of the screen where the deflection
drive current needed to be at its highest.

On the Dell that I previously mentioned, playing Winamp while using IE
results in a blue screen within a 1/2 hour . On Friday I updated all
drivers and firmware and ran Dell's self diagnostics; still computer
blue screens when using Winamp. It also crashes when streaming audio
using Real Player though it might take an hour or so. Chuck

Added a 12V 1.5 inch fan at the Tx. Using the unused heater tag for main
mount of the fan to solder a solder tag then that bolted to the fan.
Setting fan at 20 degrees to the horizontal and cutting and fitting a
shroud from that red impregnated cardboard stuff to direct the flow into one
side , up, over top and back out the other side between windings and bobbin.
As secondary side gets hotter than primary , fan positioned mainly on that
side
Air flow checked using a joss stick. Perhaps next time using some DC from
the amp rather than bridge rect and cap off the heater supply as light
current drops in the diodes bring it down to less than 9V . Retained the
template for the shroud for the next one of these to attend to.

My manual is well worn and has many notes scribbled in it now.

Hi:

I have a Viewsonic G810 CRT monitor on the bench with a weird horizontal
problem.
I'll start at the beginning.
The picture started to wiggle horizontally. Sparks could be heard close
to the HV section. Eventually there was a bright vertical line then the
screen went dark.

Cause: A 4-pin connector was completely fried. It connects two blue and two
grey wires, which are slung in an 8 around the neck of the CRT and the
yoke.
Also the horizontal transistor 2SC5411 was fried.

The flyback, which was the first suspect, is OK however.

Now to the weird problem:

When switched on, the picture shows briefly on the screen. It is a bit
murky.
It also is masked on the left from top to bottom by a curved black zone
about an inch from the edge.
On the right it is masked with a curved black zone, but this one is
running from the right screen edge into the middle like a tsunami wave
covering real estate. Then something switches off the cathode ray. HV is
still present.
Switching the monitor off and on repeats the phenomenon.

Disconnecting the connector with the blue and grey wires reduces the
picture to a bright vertical line.

Mind: the picture is not squeezed in the horizontal direction - geometry
is OK but the dark zones mask the picture.

I never before saw thelike and have no idea what may be wrong.
I thought I connected back everything correctly but I may be wrong.
Is somebody out there with a hint for me - short of trashing the old
monitor and to get myself a new LCD one.

Kind regards
Eike Lantzsch

Maybe someone else could try that experiment in case the improper load makes
the charging circuit go phut.

Having found a selection of AA NiCds in the bits box I charged them all and
staged "battery races" - that is put 2 cells in the shaver at a time until
the low voltage shutdown trips, each time eliminating the cell that gave up
and putting the winner back in the charger ready for the semi-finals.

The final 2 cells give a reasonable running time but it seems a bit
sluggish.

So I tried running down a pair of NiMh cells and recharging them - so far so
good.

It turns out that plugging in the charger only makes the motor cut out when
the batteries are fully charged - which actually isn't a problem.
