Will be shopping for new TV soon.
Why don't they have Blu Ray? Seems so simple. Such a small fractional cost of an item that could cost thousands $$.
Would be nice to watch TV and not disturb others.

Don't know what to make of this, to be honest.

Do you want a TV with built-in Blu-Ray player?

Or Blu-Ray formatted TV?

On your recommendation I'm ordering one.
Allow 3 - 4 weeks delivery.
I've ordered about 30 times from them and all good so far.

Why? At least it's providing some sort of internal protection.

Just wait for it to fully boot or put some unknown charged cap on
the leads before switching it on. At least you can help them
to stay in business.

To say the least, this is not enticing me to buy one. One kilohertzz square wave at 400 mV amplitude positive going, with a scope freewheeled into sync and DC coupled. The most effective lytic checker in the world once you lern to read it.

Once you learn to read it. I invented it, I used it to great profit and productivitly and I taught others how to use it, but only where I worked.

Now that I am older and ready to die Imight be tempted to reveal all the details. the bottom line is that tis thing read directly RIGHT NOW, no waiting for some stupid program to run. Like the one they had at opjne job, the son of a bitch sat there and said "DISCHARGING". The fuck you cre if it is charged ? Just read the AC resistance.

Well my scope doodad does exactly that and if the cap is charged then the scope will still read correctly on AC and not iondicate the cap is charged. BTW, does it occur to anyone that IF the cap is charged that it holds a charge and therefore is probably good ? Or are you testing for 0.05 ohms of ESP in the filter caps of an audio amp and giving name to the term "audiophool" ?

It is amazing they do not teach this. you put a signal to a device - the DUT - and then measure what is does. What is not simple about that ? God damn, I figured out this cap checker witht eh scope thing when I was about 16. ON MY OWN. Fuck Dick Smith. Well not really but you know what I mean. In fact I made a trade with Bob Parker. Some knobs for a Ysamaha receiver for an elcheapo boomerang. Hey, it came back a few times which proved it was not just a stick, but then the kids got ahold of it and it was then a stick. Know what I mean ?

That should be done with any piece of equipment. Practice with it and learn
the odd things about them.

That $ 15 component tester will sometimes show odd results of the older
transistors and if you change the leads around it will show up differant.
This is also in some of the documentation of the tester.

Where I worked there were many wires in a conduit carring 120 volt control
voltage. With a digital meter there was so much induced voltage you could
not tell if a wire was really active or not. You had to put some kind of a
load on them. YOu could take an analog meter and start with a high voltage
range and then switch to a lower range. If the meter stayed in the same or
near the same physical position, it was just showing the induced voltage.
Even with a wire disconnected at each end,it would still shock the crap out
of you due to that voltage.

** Electricians once regularly used 40W bulbs in a protected, hand held fittings to test if circuits were live - see pic.

The AC plug was replaced with two probes in the examples I saw.

I guess it was important to test the bulb before each use ...

Sure was, then there was the 2 15w pilot lamp bulbs wired in series for the
3 phase stuff (Hi - tech)!!
Along came the "Wiggy" which was more robust,
http://www.ebay.com/bhp/wiggy-voltage-tester
The important part was that the tester was putting a load on the circuit
where neon testers and digital
testers don't.

Some used 2 bulbs in paper bakelite tubes wired in series then they
could test line to line or line to neutral with the same device without
worrying about the voltage or about spurious couplings of mythical
voltages like you can get with meters especially Digital meters.

Once in college Elec Eng Lab, a cotractor wanted to test 3 wires,
rubbed 2 together and closed down whole large building. when asked our
instructor agreed that was not the accepted method. :-?

Is it apochriphal? . I was told that civil engineering subcontractors,
laying new utilities water/sewage/electricity etc in trenches, would
confirm that any power cables they came across that should be dead ,
were dead or not.
Using a cartridge powered cutting blade , that was explosively shot
across the cable, severing it.

Hmmm. Your device is still going to switch on low barrier height diodes
like Schottkys and whatnot at that voltage level.

** So you think having an electro connected across the square generator will have NO effect on the output voltage ??

Got any idea of the impedance of a 100uF cap at 1kHz ??

Not known, I'm afraid. And the person who was acting as intermediary
between myself and the scope owner has declared he no longer wishes to
spend a single second more on the issue, so all the suggestions so far
have been passed on to the owner, but no more will be.
Thanks, guys.

First of all, you should have a service print on it..

Some clues..

If the width control seems to be operating in a different place
than where It use to be, this indicates that HV is not where it
should be, since this can cause a deeflection change.

The focus circuit voltage dividers may have failed and or the
focus pots.

Another issue is over brightness etc....

But like I said, you need some points of reference to fo this
sort of work.

Some of the analog tek scopes use custom hybrid boards and were
prone to failure, good luck with that.

Then offer the guy ten bucks for it. It would be damn hard to find any Tektronix scope worth less than ten bucks.

And then if you get a ten grand scope fro ten bucks, fukum. they bother you, get you to look into T?HEI?R problem and then bloww you off like that ?

I hope you do get a ten grand scope for ten bucks and enjoy the fuck out of the $9,990. If so, pick me up some weed wouldya ?

I got some in my back yard, just growing all over, you're welcome to
come over here and remove it!

I don't care what you have in mind for it! :)

Digging deeper. See:
<http://descanso.jpl.nasa.gov/performmetrics/DSN_NavSysAccuracy.pdf>
<http://descanso.jpl.nasa.gov/performmetrics/perfmetric.html>
It shows the current DSN aiming accuracy at 0.1 nanorads or 15 meters
at 1 AU distance. Voyager 1 is currently at 131 AU distance:
<http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/where/>
That grinds out to an accuracy of 2 km meters at a range of 19.6
billion km. Yes, NASA does know the position of Voyager 1 to less
than 17 km.

Incidentally, that an angular resolution of:
arctan(2/19.6*10^9) = 0.000000006 degrees (or 6*10^-9 deg)
A 0.15 degree error, caused by a leap second, would produce a rather
astronomical pointing error.

Wow, that's impressive (or I mangled the math again).

The radio at the power connection states it accepts 12VDC and has a
little diagram of the three hole pin-out for polarity/orientation. I find
it absurd that one should expect such a device to be able to cope with
19V in. Call me old fashioned if you like, but that's my mindset. If it
says it requires 12V I'm not going to stick 19V unreg into it. Just
doesn't sit right with me.
I've checked the current this radio draws when supplied with 12V
regulated on full volume with the display on max. etc., etc., and it's
275mA, so a little higher than I expected but not enough to make any
material difference.
*If* that PSU is working as it should then my opinion of Jap design has
just taken a big hit.

Damn thing's linear! I just took it apart to see and there's only a
trannie, a little full wave rect. and a 25V/1000uF electrolytic in there.
That's all! First thing to do is check that cap....

Off hand i would say that most likely there is nothing
wrogn with it... That is, if it's for the japanese market?

I've had a few amplifiers and such where the supply voltage was
assumed to be 200 volts and 230 was being used.

Normally they supplied a version for the US market.. Maybe there
is a selectable tap on the transformer inside, that was the most
common way they did it.

Yeah, but you're missing the point. An unregulated wall wart is rated for
the max current that the supply will output no less than 12V.

Further to that, it will (should) be rated to supply at least 12v @ 500mA
when the mains supply voltage is at the legal minimum (not that it is likely
to ever reach that value in the real world).

Currently that is 216.2v. (legal requirement = 230v +10% / -6%)

12v is just the lowest guaranteed voltage this unregulated PSU will deliver
at 500mA, it is not what is normally expected to come out of it.

Gareth.
