Years ago I had a motorcycle with 6V electrics - I couldn't buy a 6V xenon
unit at any price.
 
The problem was solved by building my own in the housing of an old
flashlight.
 
Haven't seen it for a while, but its highly unlikely I would've thrown it
out - it must be under the clutter in the garage somewhere.
 
Whether building another would be less hassle than finding the old one is a
whole 'nother question!
 
AFAIK: the latest development in more efficient white LEDs, is ditching blue
LEDs with yellow phosphor in favour of UV LEDs with white phosphor.
 
These are already finding their way into phone-camera flash rings, and the
white phosphor may have short enough persistence to use in a strobe.

These engine kits are offered from many sellers and the quality seems
to be all over the place. So I don't know what is gonna show up on my
doorstep. I will for sure be making custom mounts because ALL the
mounting options I have seen for these engines have been far from
ideal. I also don't like the gas tanks, mainly because they look like
a gas tank. I have seen several bike conversions that look great.
These were all based on Beach Cruiser type bicycles. However, I am
going to be hanging this engine on my eighteen speed road bike and the
gas tank would just look plain wrong, to me at least. I have already
designed and drawn a new gas tank that has a reserve tank in it. This
will require two gas valves unless I can find a valve I like that has
a reserve position. If anyone here is interested I can post updates on
the conversion. Since metalworking will be involved the posts will be
appropriate.

This is a SyncMaster 2233SW that worked fine for years, but then the
image disappeared. Further investigation showed that the image would
display for just a second or so after power-up or after switching
inputs. So: looks like classic defective-power-supply problem, probably
resulting from crappy electrolytic capacitors.
 
When I took it apart I found that there were bulging caps and a
partially discolored PC board.
 
Since the PC board itself showed signs of overheating, I thought it
better to look for a replacement power-supply module than to simply
replace the electrolytics on the old one. I bought one on eBay that was
described as having come from a monitor with a cracked screen. It had no
sign of bulging capacitors or overheating, but it did not solve the
problem. The seller refunded my money and did not want the apparently
defective unit returned, so I got a set of replacement capacitors for
that one. BUT that has still not solved the problem: with two different
computers, whether I use the analog or the digital input, there is an
image for just one second or so. AND I do not see any trace of an image
when I shine a light onto the screen either.
 
I cannot find a service manual for this monitor -- at least not without
sending money to a person or business of unknown integrity.
 
Where do I go from here?

Is Byte still being published? Those early copies aren't costing them
enough to make it worth suing a non profit, anyway. The bad publicity
for scanning 40 year old magazines isn't worth calling their lawyers
about.

I never thought very much about that elektrotanya website. Very low
grade scans, and often at such a low DPI that they are hard or
impossible to read. Was it listed as a revision? That should have told
you that it would be a waste of time, without the full manual.
 
Archive.org has a staff of volunteers to scan the material properly.
They work with both public and private libraries, as well as companies
who want to put their old documents into the public domain. I see that
they have added the M.I.T. library, but I didn't check to see if the
RadLab series of books are included. They cover early electronics, as
the field developed during W.W.II.. They were classified, an controlled
documents for a long time.

I wonder if there is a UK document-scanning feed into the archive.org?
The British Library never bothered with data manuals, Science
Museum/Wroughton library has some but not much.
My local university library literally dumped all their electronic data
manuals from the 1960s/70s in a skip for landfill , without prior
checking if they were available online anywhere.

TV Picture: What Does "Calibration" Mean???

With regards to TV sets - of any type - I suspect two things
have stood in the way of this process: #1. Most set owners
and folks in general, outside of the scientific community,
don't know what the dang word even means! And #2. Modern
digital TVs are so "good" most people think they don't even
need calibration.
 
 
Succinctly, calibration means to align something to a given
standard, or set of standards. These standards may be
physical, electrical, chemical, or in the case of image
reproduction, a certain range of color and brightness when
standardized patterns are displayed on a TV.

The way I have recently started to explain what I do to
TVs to the average person is to draw a basic shape on a
piece of paper, I.E. a triangle. To the right of that I draw an
arrow, then a rectangular box, another arrow, and a blank
space.
 
I then show this to the person, explaining that the triangle
is the subject on TV, and the box is their TV set. I then
ask them what should they see to the right of all that, after
it comes out of their TV set. They answer, "a triangle"?
 
So I draw a circle! (or, a distorted triangle)
 
The person looks at me, "what?"
 
I tell them, without calibration, this is what your TV does
to the image of subjects transmitted to it, via inaccurate
color, off tint, or too bright or incorrect contrast. Your
TV may wow you out of the box, but that factory setting
was intended to SELL IT to you, not for long-term TV or
movie viewing, or game playing. Plus, it may shorten the
set's life.
 
I then explain the two types of calibration: Basic(brightness,
contrast, sharpness, color, tint - the basic user controls),
and, advanced(Basic, plus internal color temperature and
grayscale alignment.). I then explain that most reputable
brands of TVs today(Sony, JVC, Samsung, Pioneer) will
deliver an accurate picture with just the basic controls properly
set. Cheapo brands(Daewoo, Insignia), or older CRT(tube)
TVs might need more advanced additional adjustments to
get them in line.
 
If they ask me what all this will do, I tell them: You will see,
if not exactly, an image much closer to what the producer or
tv control room engineers see when they make a TV show
or a movie. Plus, the image will be far less stressful to the
eye, and you might even save energy!

understand, and perhaps shouldn't even be used to
describe the process of aligning a display and making

That is young for a battery failure, but is possible. If you search,
you should find independent repair centers that can replace it.
 
Another possibility is that the tablet's battery monitor circuit is out
of calibration. You may be able to re-calibrate it by completely
discharging the tablet to the point where it shuts down. Then recharge
it overnight using its supplied charger.
 
Use the supplied charger because some others do not supply sufficient
current. USB computer ports will charge a tablet very slowly, sometimes
supplying less current than the tablet uses when turned on.
