jurb6006@gmail.com: Mar 13 12:40AM -0700 >"LOL! I remember when I was just getting started in TV repair and my dad had a 40s radio in the shop for repair. In horror, I saw him put his finger on the "plate" cap of the IF tubes as a poor man's signal tracer. Of course, my first experience with a true plate cap was my finger on a horizontal output tube.. " I bet you learned some respect for eletricity. For me it was the cathode of a damper tube, which has even more. That SOB burned my finger all the way to the bone, and cauterised it at the same time. The "one hand" rule did not save me from that, but really if I completed a circuit to anythihg at the time I could have been history, way back then. Actually that does not sound so bad these days, but that is not the point. Youngers who want nto this business need to know that there are more than five volts in the world. |

There's also the problem that at the speeds stuff works at these days, the extra spacing is electrically significant. I remember playing with a tunnel diode in the 1960s when they were commercially available and they were quite difficult to stop oscillating! Mike. |

oldschool@tubes.com: Mar 12 07:40PM -0600 Back in the 60's and 70s, test leads were coated with a nice soft rubber, which was thick, had excellent flex, and felt good in the hands. All test leads these days are a plastic material that is thinner and does not have the flex or soft feel of those old rubber ones. These modern ones are not much diferent than plain coated wire, used to wire homes and electrical gear. Dont they sell the rubber ones anymore, or are they only sold with high end, costly equipment? |
whit3rd <whit3rd@gmail.com>: Mar 12 11:53PM -0700 > Back in the 60's and 70s, test leads were coated with a nice soft > rubber, which was thick, had excellent flex... A 1972 catalog says Columbia #01319 (red or black) 20 gage, 41 strands #36 AWG wire #01321 (red or black) 20 gage, 41 strands #36 AWG wire #01326 (red or black) 18 gage, 65 strands #36 AWG wire and Dearborn #982041 (red or black), 20 gage, 41 strands of #36 AWG wire, and #981865 (red or black), 18 gage, 65 strands of #36 AWG wire and Belden #8898 (red or black) 18 gage, 65 strands of #36 wire, 10 kV insulation #8899 (red or black or green or yellow) 18 gage, 65 strands of #36 wire, 5 kV insulation #8890 (red or black) 24 gage, 45 strands of #40 wire, 2 kV insulation all fit that description. Belden still makes #8899 (Alliedelec.com has stock); a bit over a dollar a foot, 100foot spools |

Theres a bit of "silicon" cable on ebay. I use it for test leads or stuff that needs durable cables. It solders much better than the cheap plastic stuff too. |
jurb6006@gmail.com: Mar 13 12:19AM -0700 > Geeze Jeff, hanging around Phil lately? LOL. > But anyway, I'm not as old school as you but I don't trust computers in general. Years ago all voting machines were mechanical. They could NOT be hacked unless the laws of physics were broken. They lasted many decades with little maintenance and were 100% accurate. Any computer that can be accessed remotely can be hacked, and I can't but help wonder why politicians fought to sunset mechanical voting machines (and I'm NOT a conspiracy theorist by any stretch). > It comes down to money, but automakers could install a simple mechanical switch that would prevent the car's PCM from having any contact with the outside world unless it was activated. Of course, we could remove the microwave antenna from the car but then we would lose our NAV and Sat radio. Actually Phil has been pretty nice lately. I don't know if they got him on meds or if he found a really good pot dealer. One ting about voting machines, when it comes to federal elections I think the federal goverment should, and actually could require a paper trail. When it comes to governors n shit, mayors, not really because that would come under state and local rights, but when it comes to congress and the President, I believe that "in the public interest" they would, or should have the right to make that requirement. However that could become quite the argument because in reality, this country is a union of fifty countries. As far as removing the antenna from your car goes, who cares about the damn radio ? And you don't know where you are going ? When I was young and was stupid enough to run out of gas I would have to walk, perhaps for miles, to get to a gas station where I could borrow a gas can and get some gas. They made me leave my driver's license to give me the damn can. That did not happen alot because I had a good job and did not run out of gas much, but it did happen. And there were no cellphones. I could have gotten a radiophone but their range is limited. When you drove fifty miles away the thing usually did not work. So I spent the money on food and beer. Couple times I spent a ton of money treating a bunch of people. That was better than having a radiophone. (they could push the car lol) Maybe some would call me a Luddite, but we really are heading to hell in a handbasket. |

I do note a world war made it worse.
