Cursitor Doom <curd@notformail.com>: May 07 10:19AM I was winding up one of my old HP spectrum analysers (my best one, as it happens, been sitting around unused for years) on the variac yesterday. Got to about 170VAC from 60 over several hours and just got impatient I admit it. Wanged it straight up to 240 and *POOF* the all too familiar magic smoke came out. Patience was never my strong point. So my Sunday is going to be spent trying to find and fix whatever it was that went bang. I kind of knew something was in the offing when the display started to twitch. You know how it is with a CRT tube when it starts winking at you. Any predictions as to the likely culprit? I'll post back later... |

I've been kind of distracted on opening the top cover by the sight of soot over some of the EHT bits, in particular the 18KV line to the CRT anode. I'll try to post a pic if I can overcome Flickr's barriers. |

Understanding daylight saving time involves understanding simple numbers, but when it comes to simple numbers, Theckkkahhhmaaammmaaaah is a simpleton retard. |

vjp2.at@at.BioStrategist.dot.dot.com: May 07 04:18AM Battery could exlode. Why not just open it and find them. THey aren't THAT small. Brush or blower. Fumigation of some sort. (THat's why smoking used to be considered HEALTHY.) Bedbugs (often confused with micrscopic dust mites) have a nasty feature that they can live for months on one (blood suck) feeding, so they stay put in some hiding place. Are you sure it is bedbugs and that they are in your laptop? Much talk about bedbugs often is hysteria. Unlike mosquitoes or rodents, bedbugs don't spread disease. I never stop being amazed how some folks freak out about supposed bedbugs on the subway at the same time as rats (yes, I've seen them) ride the subway. My dad's shop steward died of West Nile five years ago a block from me yet my neighbors freak out about insect spraying, and they freak out about draining the swamp (former amusement park and airport) where they (and Sullenberger's geese) breed. DUst mites are microscopic insects that feed on dander (skin flakes). THeir crap is skin bits with enzyme used to digest the skin. THat enzyme can cause nasty itches and asma if gets into lungs. It's not the insects that directly cause problems, but the enzymes in their crap. - = - Vasos Panagiotopoulos, Columbia'81+, Reagan, Mozart, Pindus blog: panix.com/~vjp2/ruminatn.htm - = - web: panix.com/~vjp2/vasos.htm ---{Nothing herein constitutes advice. I've got a few dozen of these with filtering cans on the back side culled from plasma parts before recycling. http://www.globalsources.com/gsol/I/EMI-filter/p/sm/1134192873.htm#1134192873 They're great for adding to older equipment. Clean simple way of adding a ground, easily replaceable cord, and the filtering doesn't hurt either. |

You can get the basic connector, but the filtered ones aren't rare - a nice touch if there's room for the filter block. |

Yep, and still others have an AC switch on them.. The only place I ever saw the filtered ones were on older plasmas, which is why I saved a bunch of these when recycling the hosts.. These were big, heavy, power pigs that drew a lot of current. I believe most of filter assys were good for 20 amps. |
