A venerable ATS-803, used daily since '81 was not working
this morning. All AM bands were mute. FM band was degraded
and tuning stations 3MHz low (dial 3MHz lower than signal
recieved).

This unit has had the usual mech problems over the years
with antenna/battery connex and rotary dial - all ok.
Is modified to trickle charge NiCads. Did the usual
clock battery trick without changing symptoms.

Any ideas where to look first?

I used to do electrical work. Changed out a box and subsequently they wanted me to bid on digging a ditch for power to the pool and garage because the wires were overhead at the time. I had to turn it down because it was just too much PITA. If they had called on me before the pool was in it might have been different but people do not think ahead. The job was bad enough, had to make a new hole for the mains, and it was right in the corner so had to cut the cover side off an inch or so. I hope they got it done. Thinking about it, if one of the wires, even the hot fell into the pool they would be alright until they tried to step out of it. If there was a load and both ends fell in, ZZZAAAPPP. If both wires fell in from the fed side also ZZZAAAPPP.

Of course solar power doesn't work at night, and you don't need lights during the day.

(the moon is much more important than the sun. It gives us light at night, when we actually need it.)

Of course, the solar cells would charge a battery......

I forget the sequence, think one for the 420 volts went first, then later
after I replaced a carbon, that was off ohms, then it too has blown for the
100 volts section. Both upper 400uf caps replaced with 470s. I will be
changing the other 200 volt section shortly. Everything goes to resistors
except tubes. I can do process of elimination. They don't all blow out at
once. Usually just one, but another may go off tolerance. I'll do more
checking. The 106 voltage reading low with some kind of blip. I got some
bigger wirewounds and enough other metal oxides to turn 4 into one.

The original caps are still in machine just disconnect. I was only able to
get ESR check, and that seemed low of about .1

Whitewares are washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves etc.

Just a heads up, don't use any isopropyl alcohol containing cleaners
on coal based plastics (Mainly old eastern block products.) I had just
repaired a camera and sprayed the meter pots. The plastic gears
instantly turned into goo.
