The BBS I use added this Conference last Year (2019). I have looked at a few messages, but thought to post my first message here about the Tube Amplifier topic. When I was in High School (1956-1959) I told a friend that I wondered if a Intercom systems Audio Output on one end could be ran through a Diode positioned on one lead -->|-- and the Audio Output at the other end have a Diode positioned --|<-- to have a Two Way conversation without either end having to flip the Listen - Talk Switch, and no Audio Feedback could occur because of the difference of Polarity. My friend connected a Diode between an Audio Amplifier and a Speaker and I remember the sound I heard was terrible, distorted iirc. I built a Heathkit AA-32 Tubed Stereo Amplifier in the 1970's. I can't remember if Heath offered Transitorized Stereo Amplifiers back then. I've heard beautiful Audio from Both Transistorized and Tubed Hi-Fi System. BUT I always remember hearing the racket coming out of my friends speaker when he used that Diode to demostrate what it would sound like. AND When I (even) see a advertisement for a Semiconductor Audio Amp I always think why did a Square Wave sound so bad back then but doesn't in the gear sold now. 73 de Ed W9ODR . . ... Have you checked your smoke detector batteries & Fire Ext, LATELY?! Not sure of your point but if you used a diode of any construction including a vaccuum tube diode, you would have heard the same distortion. |

Pretty early in the year for me to agree with you but I do. This is sci.electronics.repair, not how.to.go.to.bestbuy.and.give.MORE.money.to.the.chinese. |

Then plug it back in, flip the switch back to on, then hold the Surr Mode button for 5 seconds. Suddenly, it came back to life. > I suspect that that on/off switch is what holds on to some reserve power (why the amber light stayed on even when it was unplugged) and it was froze up in that mode. I think by both unplugging it and flipping the power mode to off, it releases that reserve power and then you can successfully reboot it using their recommended "Surr Mode for 5 seconds" technique. Just a guess, but it worked for me! Another method would be to unplug the cord for 3-5 minutes or so and then turn it back on. The BCO update screen should be gone. Just wanted to share as this works for me so far. Regarding the file upload method, strangely when I went to Harmon Kardon webserver, it does show the "Status Information" and 'Network Configuration' but no where I can find any upload button. Not sure if I am the only one not seeing something obvious. |
HW <none@no.no>: Jan 03 09:01PM +0100 >The auto transformer is isolated by another transformer all in the >same case. Do they really need two transformers? Sounds like a lot of redundant iron and copper. Could they not use one normal (isolated) transformer and then have contact wiper move along the secondary winding? |

I am sure they could. The problem is just geting one made. They probably just took 2 transformers that are already on the market and put them together. Less expensive than making just a few thousand of a new design. |
