I'm still waiting for the small caps (might be here today, whilst I have some stock of caps, I never seem to have the spec I want), and I intend, assuming this wouldn't risk any other stuff, to replace the two caps, then opto, voltage reg then switcher in that order (as I believe that was the order you mentioned the likely cause)? The idea being that it might be interesting to see what it actually was? As an aside, I replaced the 4 x 1000uF, 105, LESR output smoothing caps with new caps but with the wrong wire spacing (I was jumping about on eBay and clicked the wrong one) but have some good s/h 1500uF (16V 105, LESR) caps with the right pin spacing that would fit better. Would using higher capacity be 'better', given it's soft start etc or would it negatively influence the L-C of the output and so end up being 'worse'? Cheers, T i m |

Update: The caps arrived this morning so I re-fitted the txfmr, the switcher and rectifier, then fitted the new caps and tested it. DMM shows around 10V on the DC range (as before off load) but it's jumping about a lot and about .5V on AC. I then replaced the opto and then the voltage reg with the output looking the same each time (allowing for the voltage on the main caps to bleed down each time etc). So are we now looking at the switcher itself and / or is there anything else I can check in the meantime please? Cheers, T i m |

Many crystal companies that make them for indivuduals have gone out of business. For the ones that are still in business you can expect to pay from $ 50 to $ 100 for a one of a kind. Thre is a company in England that makes crystals to order, but you are still looking at over $ 50 each. Years ago there were several companies in the US that would make about any crystal you wanted. Now most radios use one master crystal and from there use electronics to cover all the frequencies, there is not much demad for the crystals. Unlike years ago where each radio frequency required a seperate crystal. |

You probably found this link already: https://davidreaton.com/hp-calculators/hp-45/ I got to that link from the opposite direction, in that I used to modify video game systems and we'd use custom oscillators in place of crystals in order to mess with the region or the video output timing. So the timing circuit that Mr. Reaton uses in place of a 784 kHz crystal works on the same valid principle. -KKC, wandering around the abandoned world of Usenet like the Omega Man. -- -- "People with happy families don't become spies. I try not to go back to him . I do know that they will make crystals as a one of a kind for people. There are many on a ham radio group that have ordered from them. The price is high , starting about $ 50 each . I never did like the Bomar brand but have bought some from them about 40 years ago when several companies would make almost anything you wanted. Most are out of business now. There is a place in England that is reported to be a good company by other hams, but their prices are still around the $ 50 mark per crystal. I did special order a few crystals from International Crystal just before they went out of business. |

There still are companies that make crystals for a specified frequency and although it has become much more expensive (probably because of reduced demand) it still can be done. However, I looked up a company where I have ordered before and it seems that this particular frequency is a problem. They provide two ranges, 30-100 kHz and another starting at 800 kHz. (these companies work with stock crystals that they etch towards the requested frequency so you can only order frequencies for which they have the suitable starting point) |
