Cursitor Doom <cd@notformail.com>: Nov 07 07:00PM >>>and the reference manual. >Then it's time to find the short cct. >RL Sure is. I came across a section of the service manual I hadn't found before (I find service manuals in PDF format *so* difficult to navigate) and it's provided a list of parts to check in the event of this fault arising. The list is quite lenghty, but is at least limited by virtue of there being a multi-pronged jumper which interconnects certain sections and by removing that you can drastically reduce the number of parts to take a closer look at if the fault then clears, which it has. Fingers crossed, eh? |

Fingers crossed, eh? OK - if the fault clears when a jumper is removed, then you know that the fault is in the removed section, correct? Not the other way around? Too many individuals think it works the other way, sadly. Peter Wieck Melrose Park, PA |

Yes, you're effectively removing the connection to the damaged section; the section which has some component in it which has gone low-resistance. |

"Commander Kinsey" <CK1@nospam.com>: Nov 07 11:01PM >> burning fridges for decades. >> John T. > Lots of Servels in Amish houses too - up John's way. How can a cat produce a cooling effect? Do you make it run in a wheel to turn a compressor? Traditionally hamsters are for that. And Amish with refridgeration? That would be against their rules surely? |
"Peter W." <peterwieck33@gmail.com>: Nov 08 03:40AM -0800 > And Amish with refridgeration? That would be against their rules surely? Not hardly. What the Amish discourage is direct connections to the outside. Keep in mind that Amish tend to be farmers, and tend to do a lot of dairy. So, in order to sell their product, they must comply with safety rules applicable to all farm products. They will use on-site generators for power, Absorption chillers (propane-fired) for cooling, and stationary engines to run fans and other devices via belts or pulleys. https://amishamerica.com/do-amish-use-electricity/ Some of their farms are incredibly sophisticated in terms of energy use, between turbines, solar panels, even, in some cases, hydropower. Note also: Amish may use a (Cell) Phone, but may not dial one. And they may ride in a IC vehicle, but may not drive one. Peter Wieck Melrose Park, PA |
Bob F <bobnospam@gmail.com>: Nov 07 12:47PM -0800 Samsung BD-P3600 was intermittent for a while on DVDs but now always shows "The disc can not be played" when a DVD is loaded. CD's and Blu Ray disks work perfectly. I tried holding "PLAY" or "PAUSE" for 8 seconds to reset to factory settings with no effect. (Does nothing) Any ideas about getting it working would be appreciated. |

The red laser reads both conventional DVDs and CDs (blue laser for blu discs), but often weak lasers have trouble reading DVDs first, usually when cold. You can try cleaning it, but there's a good chance the laser is getting weak. |

I just tried playing a CD on it for several minutes, then quickly changing to a DVD, with no improvement. > You can try cleaning it, but there's a good chance the laser is getting weak. That makes sense. Since it still works with Blu Ray's, for the moment I will set it up along with an old DVD player for the DVD's unless someone can make suggestions for getting it working for those. |

You will need the service manual to know which one does what, but it has been my experience with standard discs that yes, lasers either go out of focus or get weak, and in many cases can be adjusted. https://www.ebay.com/itm/363537162096 Peter Wieck Melrose Park, PA |
