One smps supplies both amps and 4 rails, each rail supplies both ch, I've
cut the "overdrive" rails temporarily and running on +/- 60V.
Output has about +18V on ch1 for about a second before dropping down to 0,
so o/p DCsense line to the PIC tells it to go into protect, of whole amp.
With 15R load then op jump is to about 10V. The other ch2 is fine , no more
than 0.5V on output loaded or not.
Same 2 (4 in full operation) rails supply both amps. All electrolytics check
out ok. Problem fault tracing is 3/4 of the active in this amp shows the
same 18V or so jump at power-up.
Disabling the protect line, so the amp powers up, shows nothing amiss after
2 seconds, on all main transistors, running at +/-25 V rails anyway. I will
repeat this now at +/-60 V but as no 1 to 1 correspondence of device
numbering or posistioning between ch1 and ch2 a bit awkward and I don't
expect to see any substantial DC differences as has settled down after the
first couple of seconds. How to zero-in to the problem device . Nothing
untoward at the pa input but I will tie to ground the next time of powering
up just to confirm.

position of R182.
Has 80 V in normal use over 1/3W 1Meg and used in dampish conditions is
enough to make it go high or even o/c., not removed it yet. In an area of
circuit not easy to measure or even compare ch for ch. Hooking another 1M
across it is enough to give amp operation without disabling the DCsense
error protection.
Its this R that takes the central biasing section low at power up before the
Tr25+C53 section becomes operational.

both occasions not to touch it with a barge pole.

Perhaps that's a sign of getting older and wiser. - some jobs you really do
need to refuse for your own personal well being.

Don't know about you, but I'm finding more and more that these big power
amps are not worth repairing, due to the low cost of replacements. The shop
that I do a lot of work for will often tell me not to spend more than half
an hour making sure that it's not a really simple problem, as a replacement
can be had for a couple of hundred quid or less. Suits me just fine as I
still get an examination fee, without the thought of all the potential grief
of replacing a bunch of output transistors, and trying to ensure that it
doesn't all go bang again when you've finished. As you say, perhaps a case
of getting older and wiser. Not so many years back, I was up for any repair,
just for the challenge of not being defeated. These days, it's about making
a living, and if a repair does defeat me, it's just san fairy ann and on to
the next one ...

Never? I haven't checked "decent" speakers lately, but the AR11 is from an
era when non-polar electrolytics were commonly used. Even inexpensive Mylar
caps cost more than electrolytics.

The tendency toward two-way designs (the AR11 is three-way) has raised the
crossover point to a frequency that makes the use of a film cap
more-practical. But even "the" classic two-way speaker (The Advent Speaker)
used an electrolytic.

The DQ-10 was one of the first speakers to use film caps. The original
version used mostly electrolytics; the changeover occurred several years
into production. In exchange for loaning him a pair of Pearl mics, Jon sent
me a box of cheap Mexican Mylar caps, and I repopulated the crossovers. I
was in such a rush to get it all done, that I didn't leave one of my four
DQ-10s unmodded, and wasn't able to make a valid comparison.

I /was/ going to suggest a mechanical problem with the woofer or midrange,
but the OP /specifically stated/ that the hissing sound had no relationship
with what was playing, or how loud it was, or /any movement of the cone/.

I dont know why but the first thing I tried was pushing the cone in to
see if I could identify that rasping effect when a speaker has blown.
Dont know why I did this as the speaker has obviously not blown (the
bass is still quite good. And for some reason I have never
understood, the surrounds in those old speakers aren't made of rubber
which disintegrates so that isnt a problem) in that way but what I
didnt try was to push eccentrically and see if there was any
resistance.

I suspect I am going to have to get them over to Miller Sound at some
time to rebuild (along with a pair of AR3s I have which have badly
corroded cross-overs) but what I was wondering was whether this sound
was likely to make the speaker terminal.

Incidentally the snake behind the woofer is the best description of
what I can actually hear! (a snake with a volume control, that is)

For once, so am I, although oddly enough, just today I had a non-polarised
electro in the crossover of a JVC home cinema speaker, that had bulged so
badly that it had split open. I suppose that when the can actually ruptured,
it might have hissed for a few microseconds ... :-)

I seem to remember Zenith sets of that time period having a width coil
which would mechanically fail so the core would move or fall out.
Since I don't have a schematic for your set, I don't know if this
chassis was one of the ones affected by this problem. You might check
the coil to see if the core is still there or , if it is, try turning
the core in both directions to see if there is any improvement. Chuck

I have a small stereo amplifier which came with two tiny 4ohm 3watt speakers.
I'd like to combine the two channels of the amp in order to drive one, slightly
larger, 8ohm 4watt speaker.
The amp is of the non-bridgeable type, so I assume parallel wiring would be
required - combining the two outputs together. I have read that small resistors
are required in parallel configuration, to enable proper current sharing between
the amplifiers, as without them the two amps would fight each other and
overheat. Can anyone tell me the correct values for these resistors, and where
they should be placed?

Have you tried simply using a pair of 8-ohm speakers with the amp?
Chances are they'd work (less power, but shouldn't harm the amp).

I'm not being sarcastic -- but how do you know that paralleling the outputs
will produce a significant increase in power? Ignoring the very pertinent
question of how to do this /correctly/, the most you could get is a 3dB
increase, which is plainly audible, but hardly a large increase.

I acquired and installed that ribbon cab;e and used the CD changer for
a couple of more years, but it developed another quirk that I have not
taken the time to research until now. When you insert the 6-disc
cartridge and press play, it pulls in each disc, rejects it without
playing anything and moves to the next disc until it fails all of
them.

I was under the impression that the new pickup cable I put in was
actually an improved cable over the original. Was I mistaken, and
will another cable repair the problem, or do I have a different
problem now?

There are two very common problems on all of the Pioneer players from that
era. First is the spindle motor. When a disc has loaded, does it spin ? If
not, does it start if you 'help' it ? Second problem on ones with the deck
mounted on top of the mech upside down, is the laser lens having fallen out
of its carrier. Try gently shaking the player or tipping it around to see if
you can hear anything rolling about. The lens can be re-attached, but it's a
bit of a delicate job, and there are a couple of pitfalls to look out for.
If it turns out to be either of these problems, post back, and one of us
should be able to guide you through the repair process. FWIW, I think it is
unlikely that you would have a problem again with the flexiprint cable.

It's taken longer than I hoped, but I have finally put my air
compressor motor back together and it's working again!

To review, over time, the compressor had developed a problem of the
motor stalling before it reached full pressure.

Bearing in mind everyone's suggestions, I took the motor apart and
found that the bearings looked good, there was no sign of rotor/stator
contact, and the internal wiring and connections looked OK. The only
obvious problem was somewhat burned contacts on the centrifugal
switch.

Unfortunately, as I was taking it apart, I broke the voltage selector
switch, and that's what's taken me so long to get around to fixing.

Finally, with some JB weld and spare circuit board material, I managed
to glue the switch pieces back together.

I then cleaned and reseated all the internal connectors. I measured
all the windings for continuity or shorts (they looked good.) I
installed a new start cap, lubricated, and reassembled the motor.

It ran, but wouldn't start. After disassembling it again, and some
careful bending of the centrifugal switch, it was starting and running
smoothly.

Then, the moment of truth, I put the pulley and belt back on and fired
it up. As I carefully watched the pressure gauge, I kept adjusting the
regulator upwards. I ran it up to 140psi, and there was no sign of
stalling or even slowing down! Success!

I then adjusted the regulator back down to 120psi and buttoned
everything back up.

So, thanks to one and all for your help and suggestions. I'm back in
business!
