Where cause is unknown I closely inspect fuses to gauge whether
mechanical/aging or thermal failure and then an idea of rupture current.
This ELU 20mm 500mA F fuse had no trace of the wire , no smoke stain or
hazing at all in the glass tube. I cracked the glass expecting to see
remnants of wires or powder or something in the ends but nothing, all
"evaporated". Looks like the construction is "festoon bulb" ie totally
glass , sealed envelope with metal end caps added, something to do with it?
, I've not ground-off or heated off the end caps yet.

Remove the caps, smash it, grind it to dust, and then analyze it in a mass
spectrometer.

Or perhaps put a meter on it, and/or just replace it?

I do that too, but it very much depends on the application voltage and
available current. Mains fuses can nicely metalize the glass under
high fault currents, whereas a similar current at 12V will simply melt
the fuse wire. 500mA is a fairly hefty fuse and the wire should be
visible or it should have left some indicators.

The length or size of the pins doesn't matter, the technique is the same,
and I don't see any nearby components that would get in the way of an iron
being dragged sideways. If there are, where you can't see them, then they
will be too close anyway to allow soldering 'by the pin' with the iron tip
held at the appropriate angle for conventional hand soldering. In my
experience and humble opinion, any attempt to rework an IC of this style
using 'conventional' hand soldering techniques, is *much* more likely to
result in un-recoverable disaster in the form of shorted pins, than drag
soldering.

Your point about the pitch being fairly fine for anyone not used to
soldering small contacts is valid, but then I wouldn't expect anyone not
experienced *enough* to even try this rework ...

I'm merely making comments for the possible benefit of the OP and
potentially others with limited or zero soldering experience.

Here is a 2006-2007 forum discussion of the same type of problem. There is a
link for an exact replacement part, and as I suspected, there are no pins on
that IC package.
The metal contacts don't appear to be bent under the package, such as a PLCC
package does. I've worked with PLCCs, and I was certain that the MAX1987
package wasn't the same as soon as I saw the close-up pic.
I was also certain it wasn't a conventional QFP which also sit elevated
above the board.

The Maxim package is described as Quad Flat No Lead at the end of the
Curious Inventor 101 video, and they neglected to show one being soldered to
a training board.

I wouldn't experience any aprehension in approaching the OP's motherboard
reflow repair with only a clean soldering iron tip and slight amount of
liquid flux (my original recommendation).
I have a hot air station, but those aren't the absolute perfect method for
many rework jobs, either.
For that matter, the possibility of a cracked trace isn't impossible in a
situation where opening and closing the laptop lid is causing the board to
flex.

I'm not debating the drag method suggested, my comments were intended to be
cautionary recommendations for a first-time or beginner at soldering.

For almost any applied material, it's nearly always easier to put it on,
than it is to remove it. Not putting too much on eliminates the need to
remove the excess, if that would take place.
Many folks live by the rule of; if a little bit is good, then a lot is
better. Maybe true for jam on toast, but not always good where equipment or
machines are concerned.

Another note WRT training boards.. they don't have to work when completed,
because they're not real circuits. Overheating may only be obvious if the
pads lift off the 'glass board.

Absolutely agreed. You know I'm the militant SER liquid flux advocate.

I'm also an advocate of serious lighting and magnification, but once the
chip is accurately positioned neither is required, because the technique
you describe is so automatic that you don't need to see it to make it
work.

I really don't know about the solder composition on that board. The
Lead-free initiative was to begin in 2006, I think, but that doesn't mean
the HP board has lead solder.

I wouldn't want to use lead-free solders for repairs, only because I'm

All gas is the same except for the additives... The additives are
added when the tanker truck (semi) is loaded with fuel to deliver to
the stations, then it bcomes 'branded'.

Hot vibes can result when harmonics and capacitors get together

Is it possible to install "Power Factor Correction Capacitors" and
have PF get worse? It certainly is, and a starting place to
understanding this puzzle lies in the distinction between Displacement
PF (DPF) and Total Power Factor (PF). The penalty for not
understanding the difference can be blown capacitors and wasted
investment. Total PF and Displacement PF are the same in one basic
sense: they are the ratio of Real Power to Apparent Power, or Watts to
VA. DPF is the classic concept of power factor. It can be considered
as the power factor at the fundamental frequency. Total Power Factor,
abbreviated to Power Factor (PF), now includes the effects of
fundamental and of harmonic currents (it is also referred to as True
PF or Distortion PF). It follows that with the presence of harmonics,
PF is always lower than DPF and is also a more accurate description of
total system efficiency than DPF alone.

Strictly speaking, the term "Power Factor" refers to Total PF, but in
practice can also be used to refer to DPF. Needless to say, this
introduces some confusion into discussions of power factor. You have
to be clear which one you're talking about.

Displacement Power Factor
Lower DPF is caused by motor loads which introduce the need for
Reactive Power (Volt-Amp Reactive or VARs). The system has to have the
capacity, measured in Volt-Amps (VA) to supply both VARs and Watts.
The more VARs needed, the larger the VA requirement and the smaller
the DPF. The cost of VARs is accounted for in a power factor penalty
charge. Utilities often levy additional charges for DPF below a
certain level; the actual number varies widely, but typical numbers
are 0.90 to 0.95. To reduce VARs caused by motor loads, power factor
correction capacitors are installed. Upstream system capacity, both in
the plant and at the utility level, is released and available for
other uses. Historically, this has been the gist of the PF story: a
relatively well-known problem with a relatively straightforward
solution.

Harmonics and Capacitors
Harmonics have had a dramatic impact on our approach to Power Factor
correction. The motor and capacitor loads described above are all
linear and for all practical purposes generate no harmonics. Non-
linear loads such as ASDS, on the other hand, do generate harmonic
currents. Take a plant which is step-by-step putting adjustable speed
drives on its motor loads. ASDs generate significant harmonic currents
(5th and 7th on six-pulse converter drives). Suddenly the fuses on
existing PF correction caps start blowing. Since these are three-phase
caps, only one of the three fuses might blow. Now you've got
unbalanced currents, possibly unbalanced voltages. The electrician
replaces the fuses. They blow again. He puts in larger fuses. Now the
fuses survive, but the capacitor blows. He replaces the capacitor.
Same thing happens. What's going on? Harmonics are higher frequency
currents. The higher the frequency, the lower the impedance of a cap.
The cap acts like a sink for harmonic currents.

Power System Resonance
In a worst-case scenario, the inductive reactance (XL) of the
transformer and the capacitive reactance (XC) of the PF correction cap
form a parallel resonant circuit: XL= XC at a resonant frequency which
is the same as or close to a harmonic frequency. The harmonic current
generated by the load excites the circuit into oscillation. Currents
then circulate within this circuit which are many times greater than
the exciting current. This so-called "tank circuit" can severely
damage equipment, and it will also cause a drop in power factor.
Perversely, this resonant condition often appears only when the system
is lightly loaded, because the damping effect of resistive loads is
removed. In other words, we have what the audio buffs call a "high Q"
circuit.

Imagine coming to work on a Monday and seeing the insulation on your
cables melted off. How can this happen over a weekend when there was
hardly any load on the system? Has Ohm's Law been overruled? Not
quite. Your power system just spent the weekend tanked out on the
Harmonics. It was quite a party, but now comes the clean-up.

Start with Harmonics Mitigation
The correct solution path starts with measuring and mitigating the
harmonics generated by the drives. (One useful tool for measuring
harmonics and capacitance is the Fluke 43B Power Quality Analyzer,
http://tinyurl.com/ykot9lj.) Harmonic trap filters would generally be
called for. These trap filters are installed locally on the line side
of the drive. Their effect is very much like the traditional PF
correction cap, in two senses: they reduce DPF as well as PF, and also
they localize the circulation of the problem harmonics (generally the
5th). Harmonics mitigation and traditional DPF correction should be
addressed as one systems issue. In other words, manage Total PF, not
just DPF.

? It has a small DC offset on one channel. Not large, but enough for the
protect circuitry to see it as a problem. Unfortunately, I am seeing lots of
tantalum bead caps in it ... :-(

No, but I did have an alarming offset incident with my Cyrus 2 about 5 years ago.
I was about to sell it to this girl I knew, so I got out a damp cloth, and
gave the top and sides a good rubbing to remove the dust, before she came round.

I'd had the thing for years by this time, with no problems.

She came round, I let it rip, and it nearly blew the cones out of the
speakers I was also selling her, with HUGE static DC offset out of both channels.

As soon as I'd shat myself, I yanked the power and plugged another amp into
the speakers. Luckily they were fine, but I measured the DC out of the
Cyrus 2 at about 20V each side.

So I sold her the speakers, which were fine ever since, but had to apologise for
the unbelievably Sod's-law-esque failure of the amp, and she bought one
elsewhere.

Days or weeks later, I decided to give it another go with a multimeter on
the outputs. No offset. Plugged in speakers - fine again.

Obviously my "damp" cleaning cloth had been a bit more than damp, and dripped
water into the amp, causing the offset temporarily.

I'm still using the same amp now!

Hello,

Looking for a Fluke 8842A ROM binary. Chip is a 2732A and is located in
U222 near the input filter. It is a socketed part. This one is gone bad,
and the A/D watchdog keeps resetting the micro. Tried a 8840A ROM, and
while the meter comes up and runs, all the readings are high by order of
10. Reading the ROM using a variable voltage supply didn't get the job
done, but interesting to note that that has worked at times in the past
for me.

If you get no help here you could try joining the Tech Tools mail list
and posting there. Email me for the link - a small group of
video/pinball techies that help each other out with test gear.

I suspect there are Fluke forums out there though that might work better.

I don't have the meter in question.

I'm not noted for patience with the obtuse. Read the datasheet.

The parts are made by Rohm. DJ identifies the part number -
2SD2098. The R specifies the gain - R being the high gain version. E
indicates a production date, lot, factory, etc.

As far as a supplier, if you live in the USA you can buy them from
Digikey at $.80 each. Shipping will run about $2.50 IF you specify
first class mail.

Without even looking up the monitor, I can tell you the inverter uses
a pair of Royer oscillators; two transistors are used on each
oscillator. Common failure points are bad solder joints on the
transformers, a failure of the timing cap, or a shorted diode.
