Hi all,

I'm repairing an LCD computer monitor. The smps is faulty, found a couple
of bulging capacitors on the low voltage side, the AC fuse blown, a blown 22V
1W zener on the primary side, the main 100 uF 400V capacitor after the
rectifier on AC side open circuit, and an exploded FSDM0565R integrated
controller and driver (luckily the parts exploded away were readable).
Now, where I could find the FSDM part?
In your opinion is this worth trying to repair or it might have blown parts
like transformers (not something you can find on the market I mean)?

With that much damage obvious just by visual inspection, I'd suspect that
the other boards also have damaged components.

I might try to use some alternate power supplies to see if the monitor can
display an image before attempting to locate parts for the SMPS.. even if
the image might only be the OSD on-screen display stating "no input signal"
could be considered a good sign, indicating that the other boards might not
be damaged (a definite maybe).

Many LCDs only need a couple of voltages to operate.. some may be minus (-)
supplies, but other than correct polarity, fairly common voltages.

Even some batteries (in various numbers wired in series) may be adequate for
testing.

Is the power supply integral to the monitor or is it an external table
mounted brick? If it's a brick, your best (and cheapest) sollution is to
fiind a suitable replacement.
If it's a brick, what is the output voltage and current (shown on the
label)?

Ahhh You're right.. This copy has a bad page 41 too. Guess they all came
from the same scan. Sorry, I didn't notice the place where the overlap
started. It's not obvious without having an idea of the problem.

I have an idea so here it goes:

When Michael Terrell was at Wal-Mart, he saw a portable HDTV with a
rechargeable battery and so he bought it. When he got it home, he
unpacked it and hooked it up. 10 minutes after he had it set up, he was
bored with it and was in sticker shock over the price he paid for it.
Michael Terrell is disabled so he can buy things but he has a hard time
going up to the customer service desk. So he has his good friend Phil
Allison return the portable TV to the Wal-Mart. Except that Phil Allison
has returned many items to Wal-Mart for Michael. See, Phil knows that
Michael will see an electronic item that he really doesn't need and
can't afford but wants it until he actually gets it then he realize he
doesn't need it and he wants the money he wasted back. Phil has returned
many electronics items for Michael over the years because Michael has
been doing this for years. So Phil asked Michael, "Do you have the
receipt?" and Michael gives Phil the receipt for the portable TV
thinking that Phil is going to take it back and get Michael his money back.

Little did Michael know that Phil had a hammer and that Phil was sick of
returning Michael's impulse buys so Phil put the HDTV on his desk and
Phil opened the drawer and took out his hammer and first Phil smashed
the screen of the portable TV and then Phil hit the bezel a few times
and broke that off and then Phil hit the TV and it fell off his desk.

Add another layer of aluminum foil wrap. It will take a while for the
electrolyte to eat its way through two layers of aluminum foil.

Foil can have pinholes. plus,you add more thickness with each layer of
foil.

Why take the risk?
Use a dowel with a longitudinal slot cut for a wire. You can make them with
just a hand saw.
Simple,long lasting,safe.

I just use a dead AA cell with a jumper.. foil is a neat alternate.

Embalm the 2 layers of aluminum foil with some tape or shrink tubing.
Maybe drill a hole in the negative end, heat the battery, and let any
liquid drain. There's always a way to make it work.

Incidentally, I always embalm my flashlight batteries in household
cellophane wrap because of the large number of leaky batteries that
have made my life interesting.

Because I'm cheap and lazy. My suggestion was intended to be
sufficiently outrageous to not warrant serious consideration. I was
amused at the idea of someone asking how to create a dead short, which
is literally one of the easiest electronic components to fabricate.
Note that I also suggested core drilling a wooden dowel, shoving a
brass rod down the center, and soldering a brass washer on the
negative end. I have several like that, but with a different purpose.
Inserted in a battery pack, they act as a voltage monitor and
sometimes a battery eliminator connection point. I also have some
inserts setup for battery or device current measurement.

Yeah, but that's too easy and no fun. I just hate it when someone
takes me literally.

I once worked for a company that seemed to specialize in minimalist
design. At the time (before robotic assembly), the incremental cost
per component was a serious cost issue. Minimizing the component
count was a major part of the production engineering process. The
problem was that the dividing line between economical and outright
crude was difficult to define. Your dowel would be considered a good
economical solution, while my aluminum foil wrap would be considered a
kludge. Some of the abominations the came the failure to recognize
the distinction were scary. For example, when the device decided to
draw more than the rating on the 3 terminal regulator, instead of a
larger regulator, a resistor was simply added between the input and
output terminals.

Fourier analysis is worth understanding on a theoretical level, but actually

I paid $20 for it, and it works fine for that use. I also have rolls
of silver plated double shielded teflon coax, but why waste it?

Hi,

End-of-the-year sorting through tools (yeah, I'm a few
weeks late :< ).

Noticing a fair number of tools with magnetic tips, etc.
And, a few that have picked up some residual magnetism
over the years.

For the most part, this isn't a problem for me. I know
not to bring them near media, "heads", coils, etc. Often
the magnetism is a blessing (holding small screws in
place; keeping driver "tips"/bits from falling off; etc.)

I'm wondering if there are any un-obvious (obscure?)
cases where I might screw myself by using such a tool
when I *shouldn't*?

I guess these would fall into three rough categories:
- things that you can damage by introducing magnetism
(directly or indirectly -- e.g., bringing a magnet near
a guitar "pickup" while the guitar is connected to a
typical "crate" could result in an annoying "pop"/thud)
- things that you can disturb (e.g., leaving some residual
magnetism on a tape head)
- things that can surprise you
(the guitar pickup when the volume *isn't* loud enough
to damage the amplifier)
- things that can *hurt* you
(a tool being drawn to "someplace dangerous" by unexpected
magnetic attraction)
