I live outside Seattle, and can't remember the last time I built up a charge
walking across the carpet. The RH (when it isn't raining!) is relatively
low, but doesn't seem to contribute to static build-up. I never turn on the
heat, even during cold weather, which keeps the RH from being driven even
lower.

I agree static damage to bipolar semiconductors is less likely than it
is to cmos ones since they don't have an intrinsic insulation layer to
puncture.

Its all relative. You see only the machines that are yours. To someone
who sees 30, 40 or more machines a week it can appear quite common !

soldering iron with fine tip, or it could go one better hotgun?

This same IC was asked about, here on SER, not long ago.. probably for the
same application, as there were lots of search results wrt flexing boards
making this IC's connections open.

The package of this IC is 40-pin? Thin QFN 6mmx6mm.. there are no leads on
this IC package, click image for a larger picture:

Hot air reflow would be a good approach, but tinning the IC pads and the
board pads with leaded solder, then placing/holding the IC in position,
should allow someone who's fairly well skilled at soldering to reflow the
connections with a low-to-medium heat soldering iron equipped with a fine
tip.

Trying to apply/add solder to the individual pads with the IC in place could
easily cause shorts/bridges between the contacts, which could require
removal of the IC to remove the excess solder.

If the board pads have enough lead solder applied to them, just applying
some liquid flux, then positioning the IC and touching the contacts with a
fine tip of a soldering iron would likely be a reasonable method of
reflowing the connections.

For small components and/or fine pitch ICs, I avoid adding solder with the
part in position since it's too easy to apply too much solder.. instead, I
try to make sure that the board contacts have enough solder, and after
applying liquid flux, it's easier to just reflow the contacts.

My guess is that the board manufacturer uses paste to hold the IC in place,
then heats the board.
Search "QFN stencil" and "QFN soldering".

No balls should be needed.. the IC is not BGA, it's QFN.

Hot air would most likely be ideal, but a soldering iron and skill could
suffice. This type of repair is best accomplished by someone with skill and
experience in SMT repairs.

This is why I recommend liquid flux if enough solder is already in place..
then just touch the contacts and pads, moving around the IC (without trying
to add solder).

If the IC has been removed, I would apply a minimal amount of lead solder to
the board pads, then with the IC in position (and liquid flux applied),
carefully heat the contacts and pads.

Anyone got the Braun 4737 schematic?

The 2 AA NiCd cells died, I've hot bags of AA NiMh cells but the shavers
charging circuit isn't having any of it and its proving a challenge to round
up AA NiCds from the spare battery box with much capacity left.

The schematic would allow me to figure out whether its possible to modify
the charging circuit to suit NiMh.

between nicad and NiMH, and reject the latter. I wonder if that's really the
problem.

Although some shavers have a "quick charge" mechanism to handle
"emergencies", I suspect most are little more than trickle chargers.

Suggestion... Try running down the NiMH cells (to 1.1V or so) before putting
them in the shaver. NiMHs generally have a higher full-charge voltage, and
the charger might be "objecting" to that.

The battery failure might also be Nature's way of reminding you that shaving
is unnatural, an affront to one's manhood that should be abandoned
post-haste.

I own a Duracell AA/AAA NiMH charger that will reject NiCads.
My Energize AA/AAA NiMH doesn't care. But it also takes 30% longer
to charge than the Duracell.

It looks like all discrete circuitry, but its SMD which makes it a PITA to
trace.

AFAIK it has one fixed charge rate, it goes into burst mode as the cells get
nearly full.

According to the user manual it isn't supposed to operate from the wall wart
when the battery is flat, but it came with a SMPSU adapter instead of the
iron-cored wasll wart as advertised - this does allow plug in and use when
the battery is flat.

The odd thing is, while the motor runs OK with NiMh cells it cuts out if the
charger is plugged in - that doesn't happen with NiMh cells fitted.

I'm a bit confused as to what the /exact/ problem is. Could you clarify?
What exactly is "it" that cuts out? The charging? The motor?

I bought my Sonicare in about 2000 for about $80, didn't start using
it until 2003 and it is still going strong. I use it once a day and
miss a day sometimes. I usually run it for the pre-programmed 2
minutes plus another quarter or half-cycle, so about 3 min per day.
As
Meat Plow reported, I see no indication that the charge capacity has
been reduced.

Normally I put it right back in the charger after I use it but I have
left it out of the charger for up to a week before I had to recharge.
The charger is in another room so sometimes that is more convenient.

I don't know how all the other electric tooth brushes work, but the
Sonicare uses a magnetic signal generated by the handle/battery pack
to make the brush oscillate very fast. I don't know the actual speed
but I would estimate 50 - 100 cycles per second. You would be
brushing
for an hour to get the same number of strokes by hand and I can't
believe Consumer Reports still preferred a manual brush. The Sonicare
does an amazing job of cleaning my teeth and I knew the first time I
used it that I should have started using it sooner. My teeth felt
totally smooth like after the dentist cleans them.

I have never submersed the battery pack in water because it doesn't
look waterproof, but it is at least water resistant because I clean
the cavity where the magnets go thoroughly a few times a year using
water and have never had any problems doing so.

If you mean the square silvery things, they look like power transistors
to me.

Since you have had two fail, how sure are you of other parts in the
output stage or the customer's speakers?
