A South Salt Lake woman on Friday admitted to fatally beating her
5-year-old daughter last year.

Angeles Cadillo-Castro, 32, was initially charged with first-degree
felony murder for the July 27 death of the victim, identified in court
documents only as "S.G.E."

Murder is punishable by a prison term of 15 years to life. But
Cadillo-Castro pleaded guilty in 3rd District Court to a lesser charge
of child-abuse homicide, which is punishable by five years to life.

Sentencing is set for May 13 before Judge Judith Atherton.

A spatula likely was used to beat the girl, according to a search
warrant. She had bruising across her body "consistent with a severe and
prolonged assault," police said.

Nothing amiss here either , this pcb not having been dislodged even
partially. I've never seen this approach used anywhere else. I could not
decide whether it was a neat idea or an accident waiting to happen. Just
measured one of these "anchors" , about 5 pounds to dislodge one stand off ,
so x8 for the whole 15 x 3 inch board, once the knobs were loosened/shifting
along the spindles.

I was misdirected about this but will ask here if anyone has any knowledge.
Told intermittant output so assumed mechanical socket failure. USB powered
SMD digital mixer thingy. Everything about this looks suspect except the
quality of assembly which is fine for China made, 2004
Make MBOX, model MBOX
Googling the "tick" compliance number "ACN 069 650 120" produces zilch.
Under a magnifier chippery such as Fairchild, TI, Philips , but under x30
they are blotchy printed bogus mock logos of F, the Texas state and
sonogram logo of Philips
and just numbers not likes of ABnnnn type numbers.
Without pc drivers etc I doubt this one is going anywhere , but just in case
anyone knows of a stock fault producing a hash output with no hint of signal
throughput

with USB connected but no active pc. Hash on both channels of headphone
monitoring, cycling through on about 1.1 sec period. Worse when phantom is
on so maybe something with the 5 to 48V generator. Will try a few IC numbers
to check DC rails, check ESR of caps and disable unused 48V supply is about
as far as I will go.

It was working with whatever flavour of pc until this hash developed. No
trace of 48V anywhere. XLR mic connections traced via 6.2K droppers back to
the rectifier diode of the buck converter. Looks as though the output is
gated rather than converter switched on and off for phantom. Will try
locating data on this dodgey looking labelled soic and cut its supply anyway
and hope it is not monitored by anything

That was going to be my next question - whether this suddenly stopped
working in a working system, or if the guy had just bought it off ebay and
couldn't get it to work.

Mind you, at this kind of price for a much better unit that probably works
in all PC's, why bother paying for a repair?

** The C-tick is the Aussie designation for EMC compliance - required on
nearly all electronic devices sold here and the CE logo counts for nothing.
The ACN number refers to "Avid Technology Australia Pty Ltd " first
registered here in 1995 - no doubt as an import agent for Avid products.

Seems Avid stick all the compliance logos and required numbers for every
country on each Mbox.

Whenever I've seen film of UK cooling ponds the water seems motionless so
just relying on convection and heat radiating over a distributed water
surface. Perhaps the Japanese ones have the fuel elements crowded more in a
given volume of water and so requiring mechanically forced water flow over
them

I'm looking for an online electronics forum (web-based) where I can post
some questions.

Don't get me wrong: I love, and usually prefer, Usenet. But I'm trying
to educate myself here, am working on a project, and a web forum that
allows one to post pictures would be better for my purposes. At least
I'd like to try it. (The subject of my current research is the ins and
outs of op amps.)

Ideally, I'd like a forum where rank amateurs like me can post questions
that may be answered by "respected regulars" with lotsa knowledge on the
subject.

Now, if the answer turns out to be "What, are you nuts? There ain't no
such thing!", then I guess I can live with that ...

One would be the combined forum for Nuts & Volts magazine and Servo
magazine at http://forums.servomagazine.com. Then there are the forums
run by Circuit Cellar at http://bbs.circuitcellar.com. Also Elektor over
at http://www.elektor.com/

Not quite a web forum, but more personal.

It's the difference between learning to ride a bicycle by going to a riding
club versus sitting on stools and moving your feet.

(first told to me in the 1960's to describe programing classes that had
no access to a computer).

Sorry, but IMHO the level of expertise and education you will get on a web
forum is pretty low.

Why not get your education from people who actually use the things and follow
an almost 100 year tradition of educating newcomers? In my experience the
engineers who did it "for a job" were boring and uninventive, the passionate
ones were hams.

The amount of effort is nothing like it used to be, you can earn a ham
license in a weekend. You just need to answer 75% of 50 multiple choice
questions corrent about basic electronics, radio theory and law. No
morse code. No circuit drawings, etc.

I think you have to refine your overall goals/interests.
There are many places you can find out "how to use an op amp"
(or, "how an op amp works", etc.).

But, what you *want* to use that op amp for is probably where
you will get far more pertinent information/advice if you can
refine your needs better.

E.g., using an op amp to design a battery charger is different
than using an op amp to buffer the pickup from an electric
guitar or to implement a feedback loop in a robotic servo
controller.

A place that will give you "textbook" advice on how an op amp
works (or can be applied) will leave you wondering, "OK, now how
do I use that to ____________?" OTOH, a more targeted "forum"
can tell you, "Why bother with an op amp? You can use a pair of
transistors configured like ___________ to give you the results
you need... with the following advantages: " Or, "If you use
an op amp in that sort of application, you will need to add an
external output stage to give you increased ___________. You
can do that by _____________."
