Phil Allison is as predictable as the eastern rising of the sun every

LOL. Phil is so predictable. Just like if you toss a coin in the air it's

The usual way the system operates is to pick on some luckless individual
who hasn't the resources to fight back and smash him to pieces in public
so it frightens everyone else. That's the way radio hams were kept in
line by the U.K. Post Office.

I had problems with digital cable service being unreliable (house is
35 years old - don't know the age of the cables). One thing that
improved it was a bi-directional amplifier.

A generic 'booster' won't work on a digital system, as the cable box
talks back to the cable office to get the program you want. You
should be able to find one on ebay for under $50.

If the problem is loss or poor frequecy response in the old cables,
the amp should help.

I dropped Comcast as cable TV provider because the service was so poor
(pixellation, loss of signal on individual channels, etc). I was
never tempted to use their internet or phone offerings because their
TV up-time wasn't acceptable. I now have AT&T Uverse and the TV is
close to excellent. Among other things, the router (everything is
TCP/IP) logs loss of signal and reports in. The internet download is
7Mbs (700KBs) if the other end supports that speed.

The good news is that the modem has managed to remain online
continuously ever since the technician left. So perhaps, for now,
even though he is telling me I should replace the older cables,
perhaps what he did improved the signal enough so that this modem can
stay online. I got above 9 megabits per second downstream in a speed
test last night, which isn't the fastest in the world, but it's triple
the speed of DSL. If the outages happen again I can rule out the
older CATV cables, by moving the modem to a newer line/jack, and then
disconnecting the older cables from the system for a few days.

There already is an amplifier in the system. It was originally
installed when a Cable modem couldn't work upstairs in my office when
I first bought this place and had cable for a month or two. The amp
was originally on the whole system, but my one Sci. Atlanta Box in the
kitchen (actually a kitchen with a den area) eventually started
getting interruptions, and I was told that the signal to the box was
actually too strong so they added a splitter so that the signal going
to that room isn't amplified.

I'm still finding it a little "creepy" that I was being told by the
technician that someone at the cable company can go around at my area
and decide to slap a filter on my entire line at their green box, or
slap a filter on a group of people's lines in my development without
telling anyone. It seems to me that if they did that, then I should
be able to move the modem to one of the newer CATV lines that were
added after this place was built with a wireless wrouter, and insist
that they only slap filters on the older CATV cables as a solution
rather than filtering out my whole system.

They sent me a new modem because it's their policy of sending one to a
new customer. The older modem is like 10 or more years old, and the
speed I was getting wasn't as fast as a newer modem. If I could find
out what frequency it uses, then maybe the new one could be "hacked"
to use the same frequency as the older modem?

The reason I got Cable is because I have DSL too, and it was starting
to really act up, and I got fed up. For the time being, DSL actually
seems like it is back to being reliable. A major piece of equiment
failed on their end that and they had to replace it. In my opinion it
was acting up before it failed completely and causing some major DSL
outages and some days of frequent intermittent outages before they
fixed it. I signed up for Cable while DSL was troublesome, but Cable
proved unreliable too, at least up until now. I'm gonna keep both
for a while because I need a backup in case one has an outage. I
may drop one of the two and get a mobile hotspot as a backup. Is
Verizon any good for that?

I won't tell you who my DSL provider is but lets just say the name
begins with a V and ends in an n, and their DSL has had frustrating
intermittant outages at times. Their tech support is not located in
the US, and if you call them when there is an outage in your area, it
can take several hours just for them to confirm you're not the only
person having a connection problem, and they make you go through all
kinds of steps on your end to try and rule out that it's your modem,
etc.

It's just careless design. As a contract assembly house, I see stuff
like that all the time. Surface mount footprints the wrong size for the
component, radial through holes for axial components, etc. ad infinitum.
Quoted a one-off prototype board last week at 3 hours, took 17, due to
documentation (and a slew of other) problems.

EEs should be allowed a pencil and a paper napkin to sketch out the
schematic, but after that, the board layout and overall product design
should be turned over to someone who's actually familiar with
manufacturing practices.

Fixed! :-)
Where the front display/ control panel meets the main amp/tuner panel
there are a series of wire links. Helpfully labellled too. Touching
the L-in and L-out with a finger brought full audio. Same for R
channel.

After much head scratching as to where the signal was getting lost, I
found a hairline crack acorss the pcb behind the EQ/treble sliders.
Repairing this fixed the unit.

I have a Kaon satellite/terrestrial decoder that while starting up it
will reboot several times until it works. After a lot of checking and
testing it seems the front panel micro AT89S52 sometimes won't wait
long enough for all the hardware to initialize. Precise measurements
on the communications between this micro and the main video decoder
reveal that the hardware initializes always at the same speed and it
is the AT89S52 micro that sometimes waits longer and thus starts
successfully but sometimes aborts too early. I don't know what else to
check: supply 5V to the micro perfectly clean, even added capacitors
to check, clock clean (has its own 12MHz crystal). Don't know what
else to check, I can only conclude the micro is faulty. Unfortunately
I don't have the code that runs inside so I don't know if that delay
is implemented by a loop or a hardware timer.
Any ideas?

Hold it in a reset state longer on startup. These guys are unusual in
that their RST pin is active high, so keep that in mind.

The naive way to implement reset in this family is just a cap to the
positive supply rail, a resistor to ground, and the RST pin in between.
If this is what they used, it sounds like you're just on the edge of
reliability and may be able to make it happy by boosting the RC time
constant a tad by using a larger C or R, depending on which is easier to
get to.

There are also "supervisory" chips that are more reliable and can also
take care to reset on brown-outs. Some of these hold reset active for a
fixed interval but, IIRC, some set the time with an external R or C.

Look on the board that has the micro for some electro caps. I work with
those types of CPU's and what I have done for a synchronized start up
is to employ a delay circuit for the CPU, a sort of power management
process. Check the caps to make all are up to snuff.. A low valued
cap is going the allow the CPU to start sooner in the power management
section. If this is a new problem, either the main unit is taking too
long, indicating a hardware problem or you do have something strange
going on. You may want to check for bad caps and solder joints, a very
common problem. Especially with today's Lead Free solders.

Thank you for the replies.
I tried to keep the reset input active manually for several seconds
but still behaves the same. What happens while RST is high is the
micro sets some outputs high and turns on all the hardware. When I
remove RST all comes back to st-by. From then on the behaviour is the
same. For reset it uses a KIA7436P:

Thank you.
There are two electrolytics, one in parallell with 5V supply and
another after a 47 ohm resistor to supply the IR sensor. There are
some resistors to power the leds and buttons and I see no other
components that could be used for a delay.

This micro is connected to a VFD driver chip to show the time, channel
number, etc to a VFD display. While starting it shows some moving
dashes on the 7-segment part, then the text "on" and then reboots. If
it doesn't reboot then shows "Init" and the last channel number. There
is no visible difference in the moving dashes between a good and a
failed initialization but when it starts fine, the "on" text keeps
slightly longer on the display, around 1 additional second, being all
the signals it receives from the main unit the same. This additional
one second is what makes the difference.

Humph. So much for the easy fix. ;-)

Any chance that the manufacturer has a firmware fix for this? The
AT89S52 is in-system programmable so it might be possible to load new
firmware in the field. If there is such a thing available they may not
want to release it to an end user (too much chance of bricking the unit)
but you sound like you know what you're doing and *if* there is one
available you might be able to convince them you're okay.

Otherwise, it may be time to get creative. One possibility might be to
run the CPU at a slightly slower speed by increasing the load capacitors
at the crystal. Or, replace the 12 MHz crystal with an 11.0592 MHz
(should be available). Might work, depending on what other timing
sensitive parts that it talks to.

It looked for zero crossings directly into the interrrupt input (via a
comparator to clean it up). I had many more problems with extra rather
than missing pulses. That was solved easily by using one of the
processor timers to disable interrupts until almost time for the next
external. I really need to implement the WWVB receiver to REALLY keep
it accurate.

Maybe. In about 2005, I got a consulting gig to clean up a WWVB
receiver design inside a microwave oven. Operation was deemed erratic
by the engineers. I had 1 week to pull off a miracle, and predictably
failed. The product was released with a ceramic resonator.

I'll spare you the details, but methinks it won't work. The basic
problems are:
1. WWVB does not have world wide coverage. You'll need a receiver
that scans from 40 to 100Khz looking for time sync signals. Of
course, every country has their own protocol. Such chips are
available today, but were not when I was dealing with the problem:
<http://www.c-max-time.com/products/showProduct.php?id=1>
2. To get decent field sensitivity, I needed a big fat loopstick like
this:
<http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10060>
<http://www.c-max-time.com/tech/antenna.php>
The problem is that the Q is sufficiently high that it won't cover the
entire 40 to 100KHz range. Lower Q would work, but at reduced
sensitivity. Just finding a place for the loopstick was a challenge
as it had to be outside the metal cabinet. Manufacturing went
ballistic when they saw the loopstick and announced that the hand
labor involved would dramatically raise the price. They were right.
3. Interference from switching supplies and digital rubbish can be
fatal. A 20Khz switcher will have enough harmonics to kill the LF
receiver. I convinced them to turn off the LED display as a token
"energy conservation" measure. However, my switching cell phone
charger would kill the receiver up to a distance of about 10 ft.
4. The controller group wanted a WWVB disciplined oscillator at any
of the standard CPU clock frequencies (i.e. 3.57Mhz). However, none
of the off the shelf chips offered this feature. As a compromise,
they asked for 1 pps, which was also not offered. When I offered to
feed them encoded BCD character data, they threatened to have me fired
for incompetence.
5. Whatever else I forgot...

At this time, I would suspect it can be done with a GPS receiver. High
sensitivity GPS receivers will product accurate time sync even
indoors.
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Sensitivity_GPS>
It may take nearly forever to obtain sync, but for a microwave oven,
that only needs to be done once or twice per day. If location is an
issue, I can extract the time from some various broadcast and cellular
services:

Did you look to see what they actually used? My guess(tm) would be a
PZT ceramic resonator.
<http://www.tdk.co.jp/tefe02/ef32_fcr.pdf>
These have an initial tolerance of about 0.3% to 0.5%, which is a
rather large:
24 hrs/day * 3600 sec/hr * 0.0005 = 43.2 seconds/day
If you're losing 120 sec/day, then something is wrong with the ceramic
resonator, the associated capacitors, or the CPU. Since you're losing
time (running slow), the clock oscillator frequency is too low, so
it's probably not the capacitor. Find the frequency, identify the
CPU, and install a replacement resonator.

Sigh.

I do live on the grid. I, along with everyone else was promised that
while short term timing errors on the grid are expected, longer term
errors are tweaked and by far less.
I could have lived with this if they actually meant it.

However, in real life, it's STILL not good enough for clocks. Like I
said, I have many non-temperature crystal locked clocks that are by FAR
better.

I have cheap Chinese digital watches (NOT on my wrist) at the whim of
the seasonal temperature environment that have minor seasonal shifts,
but over the year are better than mains-locked clocks.

I can't even get a straight answer googling. Lots of nice graphs that
really don't answer the question too. The BEST was along the lines of
"is very precise" and "it shouldn't vary too far".

In engineering terms, that's just plain bullshit.

You mean you had a VCR that *DIDN'T* flash 12:00 all day?

That could only mean one of two things:
You're either a Rocket Scientist, or you had a six-year-old around.

Most Public TV stations broadcast time code. The "later" VHS VCRs searched
for a PBS station and used the time code to set the clock.

Correct. It's a bottom view.

Maybe. There's another sheet of plastic on the other side with holes
for connectors and mounting studs. I didn't see anything odd looking
through the plastic, but I didn't peel it off yet. When I get back to
the office on Monday, I'll take a closer look after I peel off all the
plastic.

Good point, if it happened that way. I'll double check.
