OK, try this: blow the game up to 100 doors. Your chance of picking
the winning door on the first try is 1 out of 100. Stick with that
choice and each time a zonk is revealed the chance of the prize being
in the remaining group increases. When you get down to two doors the
chance of the prize being behind the other door is 99 out of 100.
The chance of your first pick being correct is still 1 out of 100.

That may have penetrated.
It all hinges on the host knowing in advance which door hides the prize and
revealing known (to him) bad choices. I still don't agree with the logic,
but I think I follow it.
It's called the "Monty Hall problem"? I'll continue to research.
Thank you for your patience.

Here's the simple answer that I can understand:
"An even simpler solution is to reason that switching loses if and only if
the player initially picks the car, which happens with probability 1/3, so
switching must win with probability 2/3"
Eureka! That finally makes sense. And yes, everyone was trying to tell me
that.

I claqim there are two games. In the first game, you go to the studio, pick
a door, and then go home to wait and see if they call you and tell you that
you either won or lost. Your odds are only 1/3 of winning this game. But if
you play the second game, then you go to the studio and mess around until
the host opens up a door and shown you the donkey behind it. then you can
play the game with 50-50 odds of winning. The only thing I have trouble
explaining is why, in order to play this second game with the better odds,
you have to switch doors. But, in fact, you do have to switch in order to
switch games and take advantage of the better odds.

It's not just 50/50. It's 67/33 in your favor.
Here's another super-simple explanation:
As Cecil Adams puts it (Adams 1990), "Monty is saying in effect: you can
keep your one door or you can have the other two doors."

Yup.
The distinction between the two games is based on the amount of
information available to you at the moment you make your final decision.
In the first game, the only information you have is that every door
available to you to choose has a 1/3 chance of being correct.
In the second game, additional information is given to you by the
host, after you make your initial decision and before you make your
second one. "The prize is *not* behind that door over there."
Actually, you don't *have* to switch doors to "play the second game".
You're playing it from the moment the host gives you this extra
information. It's just that if you ignore this extra information, and
*think* you're still playing the first game (as many people do), you
are more likely than not to make a poor choice in the decision you
make in this second game.

I've never found it worthwhile to fix a UPS, but the first one may have

Tell people you know that you'll take their old computers and wipe
any personal information from the hard drives. Then ask them to tell
others about you. Be careful, or you'll get so many you won't have room
for them.

Most of the people I know want money for their old computer.
Recently I found a Next brand all in one flat screen jobbie in the bin room,
it was all on a single PCB with row upon row of burst electrolytics - but I
scored a 250Gb laptop style HDD and a couple of 1Gb PC2 sticks, didn't have
anything I could test the Celeron CPU in though.

I know people like that, too, but I know about 25X as many who just
want them out of their way.

I picked up a working Dell Insperion 531S w/512 MB of RAM and two
good LCD monitors for free a fewweeks ago. Not only were they given to
me, but the woman insisted on loading them in my truck for me. So far,
she's given me about 20 computers and 30 monitors. :)

You don't read SER enough. Phil is famous for setting traps just to come

peacefully or shut the fuck up. There is no need for his kind of

That's a great suggestion. Any odd noises, seeking, RPM going up and down
indicates electronics fail or in a few cases a fail to read the
engineering data. I was under the assumption and don't ask why, newer
drives have engineering data written to NVRAM on the drive's board.

Greetings to all you techies 'out there',
I'm wondering can anyone give me some clues as to what happened to
this Seagate 40 Gb hard drive I was messing around with the other day.
I was using Clonezilla to try to get a newly cloned XP system to boot
on a disk that previously had contained a few different partitions,
one of which had Ubuntu on it. I've used Clonezilla for this before
and it's worked flawlessly - but this time, on the reboot where the OS
is supposed to be initialized (or something), instead, rather than
offer the option to bypass the CD and boot from the hdd, it would go
back to starting up the install option of the XP CD;
The XP partition was the only one recognized by the XP CD, so I used
Part Ed Magic to delete the non-NTFS partitions, thinking that would
fix it, but instead the hdd acts like a brick now, and worse than a
brick, since whichever IDE channel it's plugged into, it prevents
that channel from detecting itself and any other device on that
channel (jumpers set to cable select), causing big time delay in boot
while the BIOS trys and fails to detect said items.
Since Bios can't detect the drive I can't try recloning or even wiping
the drive so I can start over with it - any one have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Mikel
It's a 40 Gb drive, very old technology. Just through it out and buy a new
drive. You'll probably get a 500 Gb for $30 some dollars.

Head characteristics vary significantly. Some have better frequency
response than others, or they may have variations in the separation
between the read and write elements. To take advantage of the better
performing heads, drive manufacturers implement VBPI (Variable Bits
Per Inch) and VTPI (Variable Tracks Per Inch). The "adaptive" data for
each head need to be stored in NVRAM so that the drive's MCU can find
the SA (System Area).
This article should explain it:
http://hddscan.com/doc/HDD_Tracks_and_Zones.html
You can see the adaptive data for a Seagate 7200.12 here:

I'm going to second, or is it third, or fourth, sentiments expressed by
others.
A power supply has safety issues with it. Do something wrong, and it
could burn down your house. How are you going to test it anyway? It
probably won't run without a load? Attach it to your motherboard? Could
be bye-bye MB.
Send it to the tip.
Sylvia.

You mean like this?

It was fairly impressive when it went off in my face. Fortunately, I
was wearing glasses.

Yes, I've been glad to have been wearing safety glasses on occasion when
bits of power transistor have attempted to go into orbit (UPS repair).

[Q] What's the difference between a battery and an explosive?
[A] Energy density.
Batteries
Lead Acid 150,000 Joules/Kg
Li-Ion 460,000 Joules/Kg
Lithium Thionyl Chloride 2,000,000 Joules/Kg
Explosives
TNT 4,700,000 Joules/Kg
We're getting there with batteries.
