Interesting article, but insufficient information to even offer a
recommended power supply.

If you look at the various ATX schematics found by Google Images, you
won't find one that lacks input protection. That's because in order
to obtain the multitude of certifications and logos plastered all over
the serial number sticker, input protection is required.
What I look for is power factor correction. That will drop the
efficiency somewhat, but is well worth it (and will soon be
mandatory).
>Hope the protection circuits work. Do not want an explosive or fire

The manufacturers warranty only extends to the value of the power
supply. The metal case does quite well at containing any explosions.
However, the clear plastic fans, with plastic grill, will not survive
and probably fragment if the guts explode.
A few years ago, I decided it would be interesting to see what happens
if I load an ATX power supply with it's maximum ratings. The power
specs are a bit complexicated, so I settled on a somewhat less than
maximum load. For example, the 5V and 3.3V loads are combined for a
maximum of 115W. I forgot exactly what I used:
<www.formfactors.org/developer/specs/ATX12V_PSDG_2_2_public_br2.pdf>
250 watts of heat is a lot of heat.
I dug out my collection of junk ATX supplies, and fired them up. I
think two of them simply shut down and gave up. One blew up, but it
may have been blown before the test. Most survived for about 5
minutes, and then shut down from overheating. The 5V line dropped to
as low as 4.2V on about half the supplies. The 12V line was even
worse, dropping to below 11VDC. None of the junk power supplies came
even close to meeting their own specifications.
So, who makes high quality ATX power supplies? Well, it's none of the
commodity or OEM vendors. It's possible that the industrial and
server vendors have better power supplies, but I didn't test any of
those. I also can't afford them.
So, how do you pick the lesser evil power supply? Well, one way is to
check the density of the components. If the PCB is sparse, with large
empty gaps between components, they've cut some corners. Better power
components tend to be big and heft. If the power supply is crammed
full of parts, you have a good chance of having found something
usable.
Also, I rather like Dell power supplies. I've had my share of Dell
failures, but reliability is not the attraction. In their larger
boxes, Dell uses a single 120mm cooling fan, with the speed controlled
by the temperature. That makes for a very quiet machine.

FWIW, I recommend Corsair. I purchased their 650 model about 6 months
ago to replaced a failed Antec. The reason I chose a Corsair is that
they appear to hold up fairly well in review testing. The 650 also uses
105 degree rated Japanese capacitors (as opposed to the 85 degree
Chinese caps typically used). If you check out what the gaming community
favors - and they are pretty hard on power supplies - you'll notice that
many choose this brand.

I have an Antec EA380 running 24/7 without air conditioning. No problem

It get's really silly now when both switch doors! :-) However neither gets
100% chance of winning and one still loses. They both can't win 66% of the
time however. The problem is that the host can now only open one door if he
is not to pick one already selected, and since his door now has a 1/3 chance
of winning (rather than none as in the original game where he must always
select one that has a goat) NO new information is provided if his is
actually a goat/donkey. Therfore both contestentants now have a 50% chance
of winning whether they switch or not.
This in fact seems far more logical and thus obvious IMO.

In this scenario, once the third door is opened, they each have a
50/50 chance of winning, and there is no advantage in swapping
choices. Before the revelation their chances of winning were 1/3. If
it seems illogical that the odds are changed by this revelation,
remember that one time in three the host will reveal, not a goat, but
the car.

Only if the host opens a door at random, which isn't the case in the
classic Monty Hall problem. The host knows where the car is, and always
opens one of the other doors.

Er, the host can't open one of the other doors now, since they have both
already been selected by the two contestants. If he does however, and
reveals a goat, then that contestant now has a ZERO chance of winning
obviously, with the remaining contestant on 66%.
Try actually re-reading the new scenario presented.

I think maybe you need to re-read. Each contestant picks a door, then
the host opens the remaining door. If he exposes a goat, then at least
one of the contestants gets a car. In fact either of the contestants
will get the car, with a 50/50 chance.

This is called the Monty Hall problem. And yes, switching does change
the probabilities of winning, and this can be proved with a simple
computer program. I use this in both my math classes when we cover
probabilities, and in my programming classes.

Just a follow-up on the drive - whatever happened to it, neither the
electronics
nor the recording-media part of it work any more. After careful
inspection, there
are no problems with bent pins, or other physical problems apparent.
I spose
I might have an intermittent IDE cable which only acted up maybe a
couple of times
during the dozens of cyclings of various programs and test runs, but
the cables on
there are the kink with an extra gizmo to pull the cable lose from

the suggestions,
I was successful at least in learning a bit more about how hard

Good price, but if I needed a disk I think I'd do a little research
and see if there isn't
one with double or thrice the capacity for a few bucks more that has
some kind of decent
reputation - if there is such a thing.
However, I wouldn't buy anything from computer geeks, they cured me of

maybe they're better now
but at the time they were selling crap that didn't work.

I would first look at mechanical failure of the connections. ...PCB/
traces/etc.
Especially around the FM Detector area where you heat shocked the PCB
when changing that transistor.
I know it's hard to believe battery can heat that much but with age on
a PCB, you'd be surprised. Ever try cold spray when radio failed?

Any 4 pin Ge transistors in there? if there is then the usual simple fudge
is worth a try

Well the AM is not working either when this set fails. And since the
set uses the same transistors but different coils for each stage that
doesn't really help me to track this down. I could look at the CW
signal from the 249 with my 50MHZ. scope or my spectrum analyzer but I
still don't know what a safe signal amplitude would be. Does anyone
know what the proper typical amplitude of an IF signal would be so
that I would be able to simulate this and inject this signal into the
IF amplifiers and detector stage? BTW except for the outputs, they're
all 4 pin GE transistors. What do you mean by the "simple fudge"?
Thanks, Lenny

One might reasonably assume that the IF signal would not have a peak-to-peak
value larger than the net forward bias on the IF transistors. You can be
reasonably certain a signal of that level will not damage the transistors.

Well the AM is not working either when this set fails. And since the

Does it have the old TO7 transistors like OC170/171/AF116/117 etc?
They're prone to internal whiskering, most commonly the can/screen to one of
the 3 electrodes, lifting the screen lead might get it going, some people
zap the whiskers with 47uF charged to 50V (twist C,B & E together first).
If the whiskers have reached 2 or more electrodes you're pretty much
stuffed, some people use BF450/451 as replacements but you usually have to
tweak the base bias resistors to suit silicon 0.7V and you might have to
align out the different collector capacitance (do one stage at a time).
If you have extreme manual dexterity and bloody good eyesight you can melt
the solder seal between can & header and put the TO92 inside the TO7 can to
preserve the appearance of originality.

Scored a hit on freecycle today.
Someone emailed with "a few" computers - some working, some not. Turned out
to be a garage full.
Its times like this not having a car is a PITA, I turned up on the
motorcycle expecting to make a few trips, anyway with a bit of negotiation
he started loading his car - and somewhat more enthusiastically when I
offered to take all he wanted rid of, and not just pick the best bits and
leave him with the rubbish.
