Way off-topic, but what the hell:
Actually the original poster said nothing about killing anyone. Only
asked for folks to join his religion.
Fair enough. Let's not get carried away here.
Oh, and Christianity may well claim to be the fastest growing religion
world-wide, but the Nones (No religious denomination) is the fastest
growing group in the USA...

Dont know what they are called but Radio Shack has the adapters, just
bought one. Also for what it is worth the male plugs for those cables
will fit a stard F type socket. I thought they were just quick connect
F connectors and had bee using them as such until I bought a stereo
for my daughter that HAD to have one.

That's because they were never intended to be plugged in to equipment
under power, due to leakage currents in the AC powered equipment. There
is a Switchcraft version of the Phono/RCA that has a built in switch to
be used hot. It can be wired to short out the connector, until the plug
is inserted.
Explain want difference it would make on a car radio? that is the
only application it was designed for.

Ahh the good old days. My first SW transceiver was a Heath SB-101
purchased at a hamfest back in 1990 for $80 bucks with PSU. It was in
excellent cosmetic shape but needed a pair of 6146 output tubes and
a couple others. Back then replacements were pretty cheap I think I
ended up with around $40 more in it to get it back to working specs.
I've owned two or three Halicrafters receivers over the past 35 years.
And a couple really decent Radio Shack SW receivers.
Back in the late 50's my dad built a Heathkit CB. If I recall you plugged
the crystals right in the front. Had had someone put up a 40 foot tower
with a 5 element Mosley yagi beam. I guess I can credit that for my
start in electronics, watching dad put that thing together and talking
'skip' on it. There were a few locals that also has Cb radios back then.
I can even remember my dad's call sign.

Sorry, Phil... How are you going to get out of this one?
One buck apiece.
The posted reviews are mostly highly negative. I've had no trouble with any
of the Home Depot CFLs I've bought -- including these.
I put a free one they handed out at Christmas, 2009, in the "porch light" at
my door. It's been going for well over a year -- upside-down.
Home Depot apparently has major quality-control problems. No surprise for a
Chinese product.

** My post was:
" A CFL that **genuinely replaces** a 100W bulb cost at lot more than
$2.50 where I live."
Then you post an example of CFLs that are total crap.
Lasting only weeks and producing no where near the light of a 100W bulb.
And you cannot even divide 8 by 4 and get it right.

** Update: On careful perusing of the schems, I see a more differences
compared to the Vietnamese one I have.
1. The Vietnamese have used 12V LED bulbs instead of 12 volt filament
lamps.
2. The power and output transformers carry quite different numbers.
3. The EL34s have their heaters wired in parallel rather than series
parallel.
The Vietnamese Marshalls seem to be special versions or clones of the
similar UK models.

Interesting. As Vietnam is your end of the world, I wonder if they are a
version specially assembled there for the Oz market, to avoid the costs of
shipping such heavy items all the way from the UK. I'll see if I can probe
around any Marshall contacts to find out if they know anything.

Mind beaming a copy of that schemo in this direction?

** No way.
Vietnam made MA100H and MA100C amps are sold world wide in 235V and 120V
versions - as Google search will proves.
Far more likely, initial assembly began the UK a couple of years ago and
then was shifted to Vietnam cos they could do it cheaper even than the
Chinese.

TOPIC: Problem with Atmel micro in a Kaon TV decoder

To add to the subject I have found an alternative fix for the problem.
I found out how easy is to read and write the firmware in this Atmel
micro with ISP in this web: http://ikalogic.com/isp.php
Required signals are available in a 6 pin connector on the front panel
board, seen from the front it looks like:
5 3 1
6 4 2
1 - MISO
2 - 5V
3 - SCK
4 - MOSI
5 - RST
6 - GND
So I went on and wired these pins to a parallel port as required by
the "ISP Programmer" software and could read the flash memory
successfully. Then looked for a disassembler (surprise, this Atmel
uses the 8052 instruction set) so I used one called DIS8051. I was for
many hours trying to follow the code path, looking at the interrupt
handlers and trying to understand how it was supposed to work. Had to
create a tags file for the disassembler to tell what to interpret as
data and instruction and finally got a proper disassembly without
undefined references.
It turns out the communication between the Atmel and main decoder is
performed through a serial interface using its builtin UART, and the
so sensitive input was the UART RXD. Interrupt handler that handles
UART ignores TI (transmission) interrupts and on RI (reception) only
takes read data and adds it in a circular buffer. Other parts of the
code read these RAM addresses but I have not gone further this way. I
was interested in finding the proper place during initialization where
to inhibit reception or delete whatever was read from the serial port.
At turn on the Atmel generates a RST signal for all the hardware and I
happened to identify where this signal is generated. The function
setting the port output used for RST has a software delay (no timers)
and while it is executing is when the supply turns on and apparently
reads some garbage causing the reboot problem. The function is
surrounded by CLR ES and SETB ES, this disables interrupts from serial
port but I think if some noise or garbage is received it will remain
in the buffer and will be read as soon as the interrupt is reenabled.
So I changed these two instructions to CLR REN and SETB REN that
instead will inhibit reception in the UART.
Once edited I used the 8051 assembler ASEM to generate the file to be
loaded. This assembler comes with lots of MCU definitions and it also
has the 89S52. In the source the directive $INCLUDE (89S52.MCU) must
be added and command line parameter /INC:MCU must be specified
otherwise it will not recognize Timer2 registers (T2CON etc.).
A file compare between the original Intel-hex file and the assembled
one reveals only two bytes changed plus line checksum, thus
dissassembly and reassembly was perfect. Then I loaded the modified
code to the Atmel and the solution works!
So for now there are two solutions to the reboot problem, exposed in
previous messages was a circuit hack and here a firmware hack. These
are the relevant parts of the code:
The function that generates RST signal:
L0FD9: SETB P2.1 ;0FD9 D2 A1
MOV R7,#010H ;0FDB 7F 10
MOV R6,#027H ;0FDD 7E 27
LCALL L0E96 ;0FDF 12 0E 96
CLR P2.1 ;0FE2 C2 A1
MOV R7,#010H ;0FE4 7F 10
MOV R6,#027H ;0FE6 7E 27
LCALL L0E96 ;0FE8 12 0E 96
SETB P2.1 ;0FEB D2 A1
RET ;0FED 22
Function L0E96 performs a delay based on R6 and R7. The caller is
function at address 0850 and the relevant code is:
CLR ES ;0873 C2 AC
LCALL L0FD9 ;0875 12 0F D9
SETB ES ;0878 D2 AC
I changed CLR ES to CLR REN and SETB ES to SETB REN. Once compiled a
compare reveals this line with differences:
:10087000120F01C2AC120FD9D2AC12106A7897765F
:10087000120F01C29C120FD9D29C12106A7897767F
I hope it may be useful.

1) Can the infrared sensor on IR remote control receivers get weak, or
do they normally just fail.
If the IR receivers get weak, can they be replaced? Or repaired?
Change the IR-unit itself? a nearby cap?
The most important one that seems to have gone bad is in my 3-year old
300 dollar DVDR w/HDD. (Not a lot of money by some standards but it
is by mine. Plus, if I replaced it, I'd like to get a better model but
there is none (that is designed for over the air))
It's been getting weaker, I think, for a couple weeks. But tonight it
won't work at all and there is no way to change stations on the box
itself. (Only on/off, play, stop, record, eject.)
2) Also, my two new-used my Powermid pyramids seem very weak.
Thanks again to whoever suggested I get Powermids to control my dvd
player from the other rooms. They work really, really well. I got 3
new sets. (4 at first, but one transmitter was no good.)
Last week at a hamfest I got two old used sets with the Radio Shack
brand. 2 dollars a pair. They work a little, but not well**. (He
implied they worked when he set he got new cable stuff that made them
unnecessary, but I'm not mad at him, I just.)
**(Testing is complicated because it seems I bought a package of bad
AAA batteries at Walmart. The date on the package is 2014, but they
only work for a week or two in a remote, and then they seem to work
only on alternate days!! On bad days, the remote had to be held only
an inch from the DVD IR sensor, even though when shone at a good
Powermid, the remote would work from 10 feet away. But even on the
good days, the DVD remote doesn't work well with the new-old units.
And even on the batteries' bad days, the DVD remote does work with
with the new-new Powermids. I keep meaning but forgetting to buy
more batteries.)
3) The interesting thing about Powermid is that they have a red led
that goes on when I shine a remote control at one. These two new old
used transmitters, when installed in the bathroom, have the light on
whenever the bathroom ceiling light is on! I don't rememmber if that
is a CFL or not and it's surrounded by a frosted globe. One of them
also has its light on whenever the CRT TV underneath it is on. Isn't
that strange? I haven't looked inside yet. Any chance they can be
fixed by a medium-level-amateur techie?
Thanks a lot.

CFLs are a known problem with IR systems...make sure any you buy are
Energy-Star qualified:
http://news.consumerreports.org/home/2007/11/cfl-problems.html
You can tell how 'bright' your transmitter is by looking at it with your
digital camera - the IR LEDs will look white when on.

Have you replaced the batteries?
