The GE Calrod unit goes back at least to the 50s, and probably the 30s. An
electric oven using exposed nichrome wires would not be a very good idea.

If there is an answer, it's that you do certain things simply because they
make sense, regardless of what you think a user might or might not do.

I have my mother's old broiler/rotisserie from the 50's down in the
basement. My wife asked me to get rid of it so many times but I just
can't seem to part with it. (I remember the roasts and rotisserie
chickens we used to have when I was a kid). It has a coiled nichcrome
wire element as they all did at that time. Early Lionel trains were
connected directly to the AC line through a carbon pile or rheostat.
Things were a lot different in "the old days". I finally just hid it.
Maybe I'll get it out one day and cook a roast for her. Lenny

I had another question as long as we're talking about ovens. When you
use the self cleaning function on these stoves, I believe that both
elements are turned on for an extended period of time. We usually hold
off doing this until a cold spell hits as lot of heat is generated and
warms the kitchen nicely. Essentially everything in the oven is
incinerated down to a fine gray powder. If you think of the bake and
broil elements as "filaments" of a sort, with a finite life span,
doesn't invoking this function shorten their life? Lenny

One would think so, if one were inclined to think all corporations are
evil and all design engineers are stupid.

The misconception here is that the "normal" heating range on those
elements is the design center. It is NOT. The "clean" cycle is the
design center.

If it does, then one has to weigh the convenience of self-cleaning against
the inconvenience and higher cost of manual cleaning.

I've never used the self-cleaning feature on my oven. Yet the bottom element
burned through after only about 10 years of use. Another member of this
group reported the same thing for their GE.

I had a conservative, slightly paranoid friend (hi, Greg -- miss ya bad) who
claimed materials science was sufficiently advanced that auto manufacturers
were able to control how long a car engine lasted. I pooh-poohed this, but
he was probably correct. Few products are made to last "as long as
possible", because it tends to increase the price.

It's NOT some evil conspiracy.

The CONSUMER has been screaming for the past 30 years,
"I don't care if it's crap, I want it now, I want it
cheap and I don't care if it only last 6 months because
I'll be bored with it by then anyway."

Manufacturers are supplying them with what they asked for.

TOPIC: HP LaserJet 5L is streaking, how to 'clean' up?

Have an old HP LaserJet 5L that is streaking on the page.
The streaks are horizontal [perpendicular] to the paper path.

At first, I thought this was happening as the printer cartridge was
running out, but upon putting in another one and only getting 1 clean
page, the printer is right back to streaking.

Anybody know what it takes to clean?

Don't say, buy a new one. Two reasons: this one "works" and anybody
that knows me knows better than to say 'go buy something else'

Also, I have to only put one sheet of paper in the paper feed, else
ALL the paper goes through at once.

Regards,
Robert

Try the s.e.r FAQ over at http://www.repairfaq.org/. Might give you a
few things to try but please don't blame me if you spend several hours
browsing around there and don't get any sleep tonight. ;-)

When my 5L started feeding multiple pages, I took it to an HP authorised
service place, and they had to install a replacement pick-feeder (sp?),
at some non-negligible cost of parts. At the time it was marginally
worthwhile compared with buying a new printer. I doubt it would be now.
Also, a few years later, the 5L just quit.

I seem to remember that the printer had (unusually) defeated my attempts
to figure out how it comes to pieces.

Sylvia.

Which side of the paper? The printed size or the back?

The 5L and 6L are not the best printers. After a while, they do try
to feed more than one page at a time. There are replacement kits for
fixing this on eBay and elsewhere:
<http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=5L+paper+jam>
Do *NOT* buy the abomination HP devised to fix the problem (PN
5969-8695). They're easier to install, but don't work very well. If
you sent your printer to HP for repair, that's what you received.

Gray smears, on the printed size of the page, perpendicular to the
paper path, are usually caused by the toner cartridge being left in
the sun, where the selenium drum has received a sunburn. It can't be
fixed except to replace the cartridge. Measure the distance between
the smears. If it happens to equal the circumference of the drum in
the toner cartridge, there's the problem.

However, since you tested two cartridges, it's unlikely that both
would have the same problem. Another possible source of streaking is
a toner clogged transfer roller RF5-1534 (which is usually included in
the rebuild kit). This usually makes smudges on the back side of the
page, but if saturated with toner, can also dump some on the printed
side:
<http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=5L+maintenance>
If the vertical spacing between the smudges is roughly equal to the
transfer roller circumference, there's the problem.

Another possible source of smudges is toner encrusted on the rubber
feed roller inside the fuser assembly. This is difficult to see
without tearing the printer apart. This usually makes smudges on the
back of the page.

For better advice and some parts, see:

Presumably it's what I got then.

Oh well, my HP1022 is much faster.

Assuming the post you are referring to is " HP Laserjet 5L ... ", then I
see it on my server as having arrived at 00:42 my time. This post shows as
having arrived at 01:17 i.e. about a half hour after the first one. Your
server may be doing some housekeeping function or have a problem that's
preventing it from updating at the moment ?

Get a real news server. Google doesn't always send messages right
away. Sometimes they never leave the spool. :(

The witnesses to this abject, groveling apology:

Catherine Griffith =3D William Malone Griffith, Jr.'s mother

Kristy Griffith =3D Christine H. Griffith-Vick, William Malone Griffith,

-----

Questions yet to be answered:
Who are Julia M. Griffith and Justin Griffith?

Angela C. Griffith-Warshefski came all the way from Pompano Beach,
Florida to witness and sign MeatPlow's apology letter?

Or did William Malone Griffith, Jr. forge the witness signatures,
which would indicate some level of insincerity in the apology?

If William Malone Griffith, Jr. did indeed forge the witness
signatures, is his family cognizant of him using them in this way?

For those who believe that the output of a guitar pickup is primarily
related to the coils' DC resistance readings, I suggest some reading would
be worthwhile.

Not from sources where the "experts" claim that the output of this model of
pickup is 13.8, when they don't even understand what the 13.8 on their ohm
meter represents.
These are often the same folks that routinely refer to the cable connector
on the guitar as the Input Jack.

The only importance of the 13.8 reading is that's the only thing their $5
DMM from Harbor Freight tells them.
Immediately they understand that a 13.8 is almost twice as hot as a 7, while
their misguided deduction realistically doesn't mean squat.

It may help if we knew what you know about the mystery component. ;-)

Who is the manufacturer? What is "the logo"? What is the "device
number"? Where can we download a "datasheet"?

What is "it"?

A photo may help. In fact it's often worth more than a 1000 bytes. ;-)

The CS500 and CS350 units were part of a recall (overheat/fire hazard)
The recall has ended, and the notice has been removed from apc's site,
it seems.

Affected Model#: BK350, BK500, BK500BLK

Only units where the first six (6) characters of the serial number
fall within the following ranges are affected.

AB0048 through AB0251
BB0104 through BB0251
JB0125 through JB0251

Any units with an "R" at the end of the serial number are not part of
the recall.

What the eco-parrot-puppets fail to recognize is that manufacturing the
plastics and components for the new technology LED lighting, create a lot of
pollutants.. and uses considerable energy.

There is no wasted heat from incandescent lamps during the colder months
which is over 6 months per year in some locations. Where does that make-up
heat come from?

The new LED lamps have one purpose.. to separate you from your money.

The new 100W screw-in LED replacements are supposed to be widely available
this year and are expected to cost about $40-50 each.

Incandescent 100W lamps are maybe 40-50 Cents each.. and they're being
banned in the US later this year.
It's for your own good.. don't worry.

Oohhhh.. but the LEDs they last like, almost forever.
Sure they will, manufactured with the cheapest components available, made as
cheaply as possible.. with Lead-Free solder.
Most likely manufactured in a country that has been opening new coal-burning
power plants at a rate of one new plant every week.
It's not a democratic country/society, and they're not even christians, fer
christs sake.

I have yet to get more than about 2 years from those 5-7 year CF lamps. The
CFs insure rampant pollution by spreading mercury and more electronic waste.

I haven't seen many LEDs that give off white light, some are bluish, others
kinda red.

LEDs appear to be extremely bright when you look directly into them, well,
the lens that makes up the body.. so they make great indicators for
appliances or electronic devices, but that's not the same as trying to
illuminate a room with LEDs.
Without the proper reflectors, even high-power 3W LEDs don't "throw" light
very effectively.

You can believe it.. LED lamps will be the salvation of the human race..
aren't we there yet?
