I was hoping there was someone here with experience on these
scanner/printers.

The basic symptom is the image does not go to black, rather it is a
blotchy dark grey. Used to do black just fine, then about a month ago it
changed to this off-black output.

The scanner function works fine - images have good grey scale up to
black so it is likely in the PC Unit or its controller.

There is ample toner (really, lots), and the toner feed appears to work
fine - plus there is no Toner error message.

The grid voltage is 740VDC - not sure if this is low or not, as even
thought the service manual says the value is marked there I can't find
it. Perhaps I should play with that, but reluctant to change settings on
this sort of thing - so I played with the density settings on function
25 - no improvement.

It would be nice if there was a Minolta forum somewhere...but haven't
found it (will look again after posting this) so far.

My photocopy folks are trying to sell me an OKI CX1145MFP for $1500
which sounds like a good deal, but I would rather not upgrade unless
this (DI551) is really toast.

Thanks in advance!

Try a sheet through then invert it and pass through again. If a marked
improvement second time put the ream of paper in a very low oven for a few
hours

Humidity or damp paper is not the problem...plus the machine has three
stacks of different sized paper to draw on and all behave the same.

It is quite consistent in the print quality - grey instead of black. I'm
going to dig in the developer section next, I understand there is a gear
that gets stripped and may lead to this sort of result.

From my days (15 years ago) as a copier repair dispatcher I would say
that you need to clean the corona wire. I have no idea whether your
modern printer even has a corona wire anymore, but if it does, then there
will usually be a little sliding button on the side of the toner/drum
cartridge. You slide that back and forth a few times to clean the wire.
Good luck!

Copiers and laser printers haven't used corona wires for about 15
years. The problem is that the air gap and high voltage between the
corona wire and the drum would produce ozone, which is deemed
hazardous to humans and rubber parts in sufficient concentrations.
These daze, there is a "charge roller" inside the cartridge that
servers the same purpose (scrape off residual charge from the drum).

Thank you mentioning the model number. That's always helpful. It
would also helpful if you would do a better job of describing the
symtoms in terms of whether you're using it as a printer, copier, B&W
only, color copier, etc. For example, when you say that the scanner
function works fine, does that mean it works to an image on a computer
screen, or a printed paper image reproduced on copier?

The DI551 is a color copier. What do the other colors produce? Each
color has its own drum. If only black is printing badly, then look
around the black toner bin or drum for oddities. If all the colors
are printing equally dim, then I would suspect the high voltage power
supply is either misadjusted, or fried, since they all share the same
power supply. You might also check the optics. Crud or evaporated
volatiles splattered on the lenses or rotating prismatic mirror can
produce light output.

Also, having plenty of toner is quite different from having the toner
actually delivered to the drum. It doesn't take much to clog the feed
mechanism. You'll find plenty of toner in the reservoir, but because
the flow is obstructed, little of it makes it to the drum and printed
page. If you suspect this might be the problem (especially if ONLY
black is printing too lightly), then keep your fingers out of the
toner bin. The slightest amount of sweat or hand oil will cause the
toner to stick, clot, and eventually clog the mechanism. Rubber
gloves are a good idea, but you also don't want to be eating potatoe
chips while wearing them.

Another forum where you might get some more specific answers:

Good luck.

The scan (B&W) has good density, and prints out just fine through
another of my printers.

Actually the Di551 is B&W only, no colours - if it was colour I'd be
more willing to sink some $$ into it.

Joined them last night, but - see below.

Hi Jeff,

Turns out he machine hasn't had the 'kit' installed for perhaps 300K+
copies and so I can either sink $795 into an old B&W printer/copier or
get a much newer machine for $1500 that does colour and will even do
banners (up to 17" X 49").

I've decided to replace the machine...

Thanks for the suggestions though!

How does it print on the DI551 when you use the *COPY* button?

Sorry. I thought is was a color copier.

The $800 kit is probably a new drum, some rubber parts, a tech visit,
and LOTS of cleaning. Did you shop around for the rebuild kit? Here's
one for $390.
<http://www.gmsupplies.com/Konica_Minolta_Maintenance_Kit__56AA-PM25/detail_3190.aspx>
Here's one marginal kit for $175
<http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260807562475>
Several more found with Google around $300-$400.

Such copiers should run for well over 1 million copies. 300K pages is
not old. If the overpriced $800 kit is your only option, I agree with
getting the Oki printer. $1500 is cheap for color. You might want to
calculate your operating costs per page as a sanity check. I smell
something fishy, but I can't tell what is odd.

As I said, the print on the DI551 is poor quality, but the scan works fine.

My printer had something like 1M5 copies over its' lifetime...one of the
main reasons to retire it after all.

Julia M. Griffith = ?

Cheri Griffith = Cheryl J. Griffith-Rivera, William Malone Griffith,

Questions yet to be answered:
Who are Julia M. Griffith and Justin Griffith?

Angela C. Griffith-Warshefski came all the way from Pompano Beach,
Florida to witness and sign MeatPlow's apology letter?

Or did William Malone Griffith, Jr. forge the witness signatures,
which would indicate some level of insincerity in the apology?

If William Malone Griffith, Jr. did indeed forge the witness

I need to record the time a device (say A1) is switched on (nice if it
records the time the device is switched off).

I suppose that I need to wire the power cable through this device and from
this device connect to A1.

Is there any such device ? Or any other method of doing this ? (the device
A1 is at home).

Thanks.

A basic digital watch , assuming it starts from cold at 00:00 , 01 Jan 1981
or whatever .
And a latch to keep the power to watch going . Another watch and another
latch set by the first latch.
Then subtruct the hours and mins from the reading time

An AC hour meter should work. It would be connected across the
switched AC line where goes to device A1. They cost about $10US on
ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Tech-Hour-Meter-AC-100-250V-Boat-Car-Truck-Tractor-/200587032950?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb3eb3976

This one displays up to 99999.9 hours then cycles back to 0.

An analog clock, either battery or AC, plus a DPST switch.
When the switch turns A1 on, it turns the clock off, thus
indicating when A1 was turned on.

Hypothetical as enough space for a second Tx this time. Open construction
toroid Tx mainly 45-0-45V 400 watt and 10 turns of fine wire to give an IC
supply of 35V,0.1 amp ac, over the thick windings and under the outer
taping.
No exact replacement Tx available. If you used a bulk standard 45-0-45 400VA
Tx and then over the outer taping you wound some turns , would you need more
turns ?
Then added taping over that overwind and allowance/padding for mounting
forces over the end faces.

** Need way more than 10 turns.

** No.

You get a fixed voltage per turn - depending on the core size.

A 1 square inch core gives about 0.2 to 0.25 volts per turn - the bigger
the core, the more the volts.

Simple trick is to loosely wind about 10 turns on the tranny and check the
resulting voltage with a DMM.

Then you know the turns per volt.

Yes, it's you--using a Web interface to Usenet
and not understanding the limitations of that tool.

Every ~18 months, Google Groups "improves" their UI
(usually in some imperceptible way).
In the process, their pages don't get updated for many hours.
The longest I have seen before was 36 hours.
This time (>3 days), there must be a BIG "improvement".

The next time your post doesn't appear immediately,
rather than displaying your ignorance by posting yet again
(and not having that show up at GG for hours),
go to a high-traffic group
(alt.test is the highest, I'm guessing)
and see if the last thing appearing is over 10 minutes old.
If so, Google is playing their games again.

It's that simple.

There are several ways the perpendicular-streak symptom can
be generated. It can be a power or gain fluctuation in
the laser drive (this is rare). It might be a
faulty corona discharge wire/connection; if you can identify
the HV contacts you can clean those with isopropyl alcohol.
it can be a light leak (easy to check, just make test pages
in the dark). And, if toner has made a dirty streak on the
toner cartridge in the past, it MIGHT have transferred a dirty
stripe to the fuser roller. Repetitive streaks tell you the
circumference of the roller that causes this kind of problem.
I've had some luck (not much) cleaning photoconductor drums
with Scotch tape; stick the tape over the deposit, then lift
the tape off and hope the deposit comes with the tape.
Any roller OTHER THAN the photoconductor can be cleaned
with isopropyl alcohol.

For paper feed, clean the pickup rollers (rubbery things that drag the
top sheet of paper) with isopropyl alcohol.

Slight correction. The HP LaserJet 5L does NOT use a corona wire. It
has a "charge roller" inside the toner cart which does the same thing
as a corona wire (apply a charge onto the drum, and later switch to AC
to remove any residual charge).

A picture is worth 1000 Google searches:

I've cleaned lots of 5 HP printer laser prisms and mirrors in industrial
applications. They are very prone to contamination from smoke.

Did the OP state that the problem was smoke-related? No? Then why
bother posting this tripe, retard? You provided no solution as to HOW

Title: Apology to Charles Novins

The witnesses to this abject, groveling apology:

Angela Griffith = Angela C. Griffith-Warshefski, William Malone
Griffith, Jr.'s sister

Catherine Griffith = William Malone Griffith, Jr.'s mother

Julia M. Griffith = ?

Cheri Griffith = Cheryl J. Griffith-Rivera, William Malone Griffith,
Jr.'s sister

Justin Griffith = ?

Kristy Griffith = Christine H. Griffith-Vick, William Malone Griffith,
Jr.'s sister

-----

Questions yet to be answered:
Who are Julia M. Griffith and Justin Griffith?

Angela C. Griffith-Warshefski came all the way from Pompano Beach,
Florida to witness and sign MeatPlow's apology letter?

Or did William Malone Griffith, Jr. forge the witness signatures,
which would indicate some level of insincerity in the apology?

If William Malone Griffith, Jr. did indeed forge the witness
signatures, is his family cognizant of him using them in this way?

TOPIC: No remote control? Fixable?

==============================================================================

From: mm

My Philips DVDR, model DVDR3576H (160 GB), only 3 years old, stopped
responding to my remote.

Replaced the batteries. No better.

Used the universal remote that doesn't have all the commands, only
on/off, numbers, play, stop, etc. No better. That remote still
works fine with a tv it's also set up for. (Up for which it's also
set.)

Turned the DVDR off for hours, no better. (The remote has nothing
to do with any logic circuits that can get confused, anyhow, right?)

Moved the factory remote around 1/2 inch from the IR window and kept
the 1 button down for a while and finally got a 1 to show in the
channel display. Got a 5 the same way. Can't make an 11, and no
other buttons work either.

Could the problem be the thing behind the IR window, which I can
probably buy or scavenge and already have one in my used-parts drawer
too? Or is it more likely to be some small part on the circuit board?

Is this fixable at a reasaonable price, or even under 100?

Is it fixable by me, who used to fix a tvs fairly successfully before
they went to IC's and propietary boards

Thanks.

Background:
After 3 years, they are making no improvements to this model and there
is no other model quite as good with a digital tuner and harddrive. I
use only the harddrive 99% of the time. I don't foresee anything
better for years to come, since they concentrate on cable and sat.
customers.

IS THERE SOMETHING NEW i DON'T KNOW ABOUT? (The other brand starts
with M, iirc. Magnavox?)

I paid 300 or a little more, and 20 refurbished previous models are on
ebay new at $205! There's a used one, my model, on ebay at $76 with 4
more days to bid. I could buy one of these and when it breaks in a
few years I might be able to use the IR sensor or the board it
connects to to repair this current one.

Deep, deep background, that is, unneeded info for the curious. There
are a lot of flaws in the design of this, but this is still the best
model for OTA, one of the 2 latest models I know of DVDRs with an ATSC
tune and hard drive.

But: It doesn't save the program name or description, only the time
and channel and length that it was recorded. It doesn't let you look
at the program info when you're recording the program. The live info
display doesn't show what time the progrram starts or ends, like the
set-top box I have does. If program scan includes channel 2.1, it
must also include 2.2, 2.3 etc. If you set it to record for two
hours, but you have a pre-set recording starting in the middle of
that, the pre-set takes preference, unlike my good VCR. And lots of
smaller things, all of which could be corrected I think with a
firmware upgrade, but they only wrote one firmware upgrade for one big
problem at the start, and no more. As to physical stores, these were
only sold at Walmart, because everyone else has cable, I guess. (It
does permit editing that I will never do.)

There is even a still older model, broken, that he wants 120 inc s&h
for parts!!!

If you changed transmitters (remotes) and the problem stayed with the
receiver (DVDR) then the problem is most likely with the DVDR, not the
remotes.

AFAIK, most IR receivers use pulses (of various encoding schemes)
modulating a carrier of something near 38 KHz. If the receiver module
has croaked, there are replacements.

Lots of the receiver modules look like
<http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=751-1385-5-ND>
some like
<http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=425-2022-ND>
or
<http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=425-1994-ND>

While it's best to match the transmitter's carrier frequency with the
center of the bandpass on the receiver, the receivers are generally
fairly forgiving. That's why the "universal" remotes are effective, too.

I see it all the time, but I'm still amazed by the number of questions
that show up here without the slightest hint of specification required
to attempt a well-reasoned suggestion.

This elicits the firestorm of suggestions followed by the
inevitable name-calling fest. Are we having fun yet?

My answer to your question is, "Can't be done."
But that's according to MY definition of "small" and MY
assumptions about run time.

Perhaps, you could be influenced to disclose YOUR definitions
of "small" and your desired run time.
Did you really mean 0.5V -2A? and does that mean it's a current sink?
or???
What accuracy/stability is required?

Reasonableness of the answer is highly dependent on the specificity
of the question.
Your question ain't got none.
