Usually we don't have accidents of the primary messing with the secondary. MV distribution is all around the city with buried cables, some of them are very old, with paper insulation. However, there was a bad accident where a lineman was connecting a new supermaket to a 20kV circuit, there were two buried cables, and they have a special device that checks if the cable is live. So he checked and it wasn't. But back at the substation they energized it and the arc flash instantly killed him, and temporary blinding everyone at the vicinity. And in the Thessaloniki substation, a potential transformer exploded (400 kV) and the debris destroyed an auto transformer (400/150 kV) and there were serious problems with power for the whole area. I have a surge power strip on my computer and when I turn my PC off I throw both the PSU switch and the power strip one. On my stereo I have a voltage regulator and when off I throw the VR's switch, the power strip's and the amp's. That should be enough. If there's an 20kV surge the PC and the stereo would be the least of my worries. |

In my neighbourhood the top line is usually 1600V, with one or a few pole pigs per block to make 120-0-120V. Of course we're about half a mile from the substation. "Mr. Man-wai Chang" <toylet.toylet@gmail.com>: Feb 10 11:31PM +0800 > doesnt boot up, nothing on screen. cmos battery was stone dead, replaced. doesnt even get a bios screen, nothing. this one has an azus AT31ont-1 board, 1 gig ram. it has a flash drive for operating system. with or without the drive in it, i get nothing. the power supply also doesnt turn on. you do get a little blue led on the motherboard, but no PS fan, no 5,12 volts. i now have it on the bench with an ATX power supply jumpered to always turn on,and a vga monitor. blue led is lit , 5, and 12 volts are present, and still get nothing. documentation seems to be non existant, i cant find anything. its from a video game, and im sure the bios was set to power up when the 110v switch is turned on. there must be a way to use an "on" switch like a pc, to get it into the bios screen, but i havent a clue what to jumper. N_Cook <diverse@tcp.co.uk>: Feb 10 02:50PM Replaced earth trace with an earth wire, tiny DPDT 8A relay replaced with 2 SPST 15A relays stacked on top of each other. So far so good , stable -80.0,80V rails , mV output, red ->green-> no protect LED sequence at power up . Cannot sensibly check audio until that rat's nest is complete. Just as well took pics, as had not realised black wires were for Dc gnd, plum for -ve and red for +ve |

Phil Off your meds again? Fluke 73III True RMS meter. Set to ohms. Cross leads. Hold Down Yellow (range) Button. Meter adjusts to 0 ohms. Proceed from there. I have been using this meter for almost 20 years now, and go through this when either switching leads or changing the battery, or if it has been sitting for a while. I guess quality equipment (along with quality meds) is not available in your cave? |
