Its an old retro LED job and the = button needs a convincing jab to work - but it has a proper on/off slide switch that doesn't get knocked on in my jacket pocket. |

It's crazy how businesses merge and re-merge, and unmerge. The only connection that Tandy had with Radio Shack was that both were for hobbiests. (Entirely different hobbies). Allied Radio is gone, but Allied Electronics remains today (their commercial business). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_Electronics Since I was on Wiki, I looked up Radio Shack. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RadioShack It's a long article and quite interesting. As technology changed, so did R.S. (This article is worth reading). In that article it says that May 31, 2017 is the official closing date for most stores (except private ones_. That confirms it. |

I have a Casio solar with no battery at all - its allegedly collectible, so I took the opportunity to put it somewhere safer than my jacket pocket. |
C.Copperpot <Chester.Copperpot@Goonies.com>: May 24 04:01PM -0700 I still have 3 or 4 free comics they gave away in the 1970's. I think they were made by DC. They were the last place in town that had a tube tester and sold tubes. Gold plated pins with a lifetime warranty. |

I have about 2 dozen of their gold pin "Lifetime warranty" tubes that keep at the shop. -- Jeff-1.0 wa6fwi http://www.foxsmercantile.com --- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG. http://www.avg.com |

The manager of another was a former military elecronics engineer. Both could tell you anything you needed to know about CB radios, Stereo sytems etc and knew their components inside out. Sadly, that all ended when Circuit City closed the last Canadian Radio Shacks in 2007 - |

I dont recall the comics, but now that you mentioned it, I do remember the gold plated pin tubes. I think R.S. was the only company to make gold plated pin tubes. So, if I have one of these tubes and it is bad, where do I go for the "lifetime warranty". --- Now I know I'm old. I cant find any store with a tube tester anymore, and when I went to phone in a complaint about it, I could not find a single pay phone booth to make the call. |

You bite the bullet and buy a new one. There's a new one on eBay for $77 or you can go to Mouser for $104.25. I use my Metcal quite a bit and am still on the same handpiece for 15 years but I do have a shiny new handpiece "just in case". Also, my Metcal was bought used on eBay. G² |

"David Farber" <farberbear.unspam@aol.com>: May 24 04:34PM -0700 >> Los Osos, CA > appears to be an actual design error > m I agree with your conclusion about the design error but how did this receiver ever work properly as initially designed? I imagine there would have been a lot of returns! Thanks for your reply. -- David Farber Los Osos, CA |
jurb6006@gmail.com: May 24 10:30PM -0700 >"but how did this receiver ever work properly as initially designed" Having dealt with leakage on PC boards it might be that internal leakage in the IC pulled it to ground but with very high resistance. Over years and exposure to humidity it picks up other leakage from traces on the PC board and throws off the bias. Either that or there were high value resistors internal to the IC that have gone open over the years. the higher the value the more likely they are to open up. True of regular resistors, why not ones internal to an IC. I have actually had this on a TV once. Had to add a 1 meg to ground to fix it, or replace the IC. The 1 meg did just fine. |
oldschool@tubes.com: May 24 01:42PM -0400 I recall when Radio Shack had schematics for every one of their items. Brands like Archer, Micronta, Tandy, Realistic etc. Radio shack items will be around for a long time, and I have many of them. But the website is gone. If anyone knows a URL that has all the schamatics, please post it. I may go on a downloading binge and download all the schamatics and manuals, before they are completely gone. I used to think that webites remained on the web forever, but that is not the case. Had I known then, what I know now, I would have downloaded this stuff long ago. |

Fedex has them now. > Mikek That's the good news... here's the bad: A lot of people do their own diagnosing or follow someone's (alleged) success on youtube and always assume their TV has the same issue. What happens is they buy the wrong board, or the TV doesn't need a board at all if the display itself is bad or has an open LED in the display or a wiring issue inside. Recent Samsungs are known for LED failures. It would not surprise me if you don't get a return request on one or both of those boards. My dad always told me not to count my chickens before they're hatched. Good luck. |
