My new used car from 2005 has a CD that will not play an MP3 CD, but I
can buy an adapter that will add an AUX input and a USB input to the
radio. (Since the radio has a CD changer jack that is not in use, and
this is designed for that shape of jack.)

Long after I ordered one for $18, it suddenly dawned on me that if it
can't play an MP3 CD, it won't be able to play an MP3 file from a
USB-connected flashdrive. That's true, is it not????

It's amazing how long it took me to think of this problem, at least a
week.

I'd say it depends on the capabilities of this mysterious "adaptor".
What does it claim?

The car radio won't see a USB device, it'll see an aux level analogue
input, hopefully the $18 device acts as an MP3 player with e.g. 1/8"
jack analogue output?

Got a link?

Is it the "iTrip" equivalent you linked to up ^^^ there somewhere?

in which case you tune the radio's FM to the device, and the device acts
as a very small range transmitter.

Unless your radio is used to control a number of features on the car
(such as in a VW, which yours isn't, since in 2005 VW CD players played
MP3s) then I'd go to someplace like crutchfield.com and buy a new radio
and spend the hour or so to put it in. (been there, done that). There's
probably even a video on youtube for your make and model of car showing
just how to do it.

Staying in touch with a particular phone operator at your provider's help desk is key. MP3 players (and now the cloud) sometimes don't do what they're not specifically programmed to do and help desks can go over that with you.
If you don't want to ask your phone or device service provider what kind of car radio you should have in your car, then you could always go to the junkyard and into a ruined car and take out a radio system that may still be good.

Update for Jeff and Rod:

Using that bullet and planar antenna above, I finally got around to
physically mounting the Ubiquiti Bullet M2HP connected to a 14dBi planar
antenna outside on a pole stuck into the leftover hole from an ancient
15-foot wide satellite dish which was removed long ago.

Here are some LOS Android-based received-signal-strength measurements for
Jeff Liebermann and Rod Speed where I set up *exactly* what Rod Speed wants
to accomplish.
<https://s1.postimg.org/7za88bam6n/wifi.jpg>

Those measurements are roughly at about 300 feet LOS (-50dBm to -60dBm) and
at about 100 feet LOS (-35dBm to -40dBm) distance from the radio which is
wired to the SOHO router and set up as an "access point" (which is what Rod
wants to do).

On a few occasions when I start my Lenovo T500 laptop the keyboard is
unresponsive. With all the Lenovo features, is there some keyboard
lock/unlock that I can use?

The usb mouse works and I can run apps etc.

Is this a know problem.

This laptop is new to me.
Running Win XP Pro SP3.

Does an external keyboard work while the laptop kbd doesn't? If so you
might try reseating the flex cable for it.

If you boot a Linux Live CD does the kbd work normally? If so it may be
a driver problem.

How long has this been happening? Was liquid spilled on the kbd?
LenovoLap <LenovoLap@LenovoLap.com>: Oct 02 04:13PM -0700

never have a USB kbd where I am on travel.

Happened maybe 3 times out of 50.

never spilled on it.

when it works (most of the time) is works perfectly.

keys all feel perfect too.

I cannot replicate the problem, it happens when it happens.

Does the laptop battery last the normal amount of time ?

Maybe the keyboard is drawing too much current and
the Polyfuse is opening on it. Perhaps you could
leave your shift-lock engaged from session to session,
and see if the LED is dead when the machine starts
without the keyboard running.

There has to be some way to monitor that the keyboard
is getting power. I use my shift-lock LED for that,
but maybe you can think of another way.

And taking it apart, doesn't look like that much fun.
I don't like connectors I'm "forced to lift with a spudger".

Unimportant when performing troubleshooting. You are at home. So is
your laptop, so your laptop is not currently travelling. While you and
your laptop are at home, attach a USB keyboard to the laptop and retest.

> Happened maybe 3 times out of 50.

You shotgunned to multiple OS newsgroups yet it is highly unlikely that
your laptop can run all those OSes. If the problem keeps happening but
so erratically, take along a USB keyboard to test when the problem does
arise. There are rollup keyboards so they won't occupy much space in
the laptop bag, and some are damn cheap, like $8:

Have you turned it upside down and use canned air to blow out any debris
that has accumulated under the keys?

> when it works (most of the time) is works perfectly.

Something else to try when the problem arises: boot Windows (whatever
version you have on the laptop) into its safe mode. That loads the
drivers and only the necessary (critical) services. Startup programs do
not get loaded which could be the cause of your problem.

> keys all feel perfect too.
> I cannot replicate the problem, it happens when it happens.

You said the keyboard is sometimes unresponsive but the USB mouse still
works. How about the touchpad on the laptop? Does that still work when
the keyboard becomes unresponsive? Test the touchpad, too, next time.

Since the mouse still works, and when the keyboard becomes unresponsive,
go into Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) and check if the keyboard is listed
and if there is no yellow exclamation mark for it.

"new to me" doesn't really say the laptop itself is new. Could be you
got a used or hand-me-down laptop. Talked to the prior owner yet?
Maybe that's why they got rid of it. If it was given to you the donor
probably won't hide an existing fault with the hardware. If it was sold
to you, a seller that won't respond could mean they knew about the
existing hardware problem.

The Thinkpad T500 came out in July 2008. I did not bother to check if
any [respectable] e-tailer is still selling *new* units (i.e., not used,
not refurbished). I see online retailers selling parts for the T500 but
not selling the T500 itself.

Yes, I'm sure you do. I bought it. And I've tested it in the car with
a little MP3 player and it works well afaict so far. Now to load up the
MP3 player before my trip in November.

I think for $3 I'll buy another one, for when I break the first one.

Very interesting. I have one that plugs into the cig lighter, but I've
only made one call and, at my request, received one call. I was able to
talk and drive that time, because of the route, but I'm not sure I could
other times.

It's amazing that they have a remote control for a car. Maybe the
people in the back seat will use it.
