(probably 6 or 12V). > So, why are there batteries inside of them? Batteries are used to keep book-keeping information - number of games played, number of coins, replay levels, game adjustable features, etc. The most common chip used at first was the 5101 256x4 CMOS RAM, needed roughly 2VDC to maintain and usually a 3.6VDC Ni-Cad battery was installed to keep that device charged. I didn't toss these batteries as I didn't want to pollute the garbage with them and kept them under my bench in a milk crate (had two crates filled over 20 years - they didn't leak enough to make any sort of mess or odor) and in the last few years recycling got to the point where they would take old batteries at no charge so we could finally safely dispose of them - I assumed safely, but not so sure now that I hear about all the recycling done in 3rd world countries... The white stuff is KOH (potassium hydroxide) which kinda looks like frost. What's interesting is that the leaky cells in the photo that I tested showed good on a voltmeter. I've also opened the battery compartment on a working device, that showed a good battery on its LCD display, but which contained cells that were leaking all over the battery compartment. -- Jeff Liebermann jeffl@cruzio.com 150 Felker St #D http://www.LearnByDestroying.com Santa Cruz CA 95060 http://802.11junk.com Skype: JeffLiebermann AE6KS 831-336-2558 |
Jeff Liebermann <jeffl@cruzio.com>: Feb 20 11:20PM -0800 >get a piece of foam and make an external intake filter >much easier to clean an external filter >m Won't work. The basic problem is that the typical laptop fan air intake is on the bottom of the laptop, where it can play vacuum cleaner and suck all the dust, hair, and food debris from the table and into the fan. The fan then uses centrifugal force to launch all this crud into the heat pipe fins, where they get stuck. Plugging the intake with a filter might prevent clogging the downstream fins, but just moves the problem to the intake filter, which can also become clogged. Granted, an intake filter is easier to clean, but from experience, nobody ever cleans the filters until they are totally clogged. A better solution would be to find a more protected air intake location, such as on the top of the machine. That could be done with a plenum or duct, but with todays ultra-thin laptops, there's no room. Worse, most of the top is obstructed by the keyboard. There are a few laptops that have the air intake on the side, and exhaust out the back. Those don't clog as easily, but do tend to have larger cases. -- Jeff Liebermann jeffl@cruzio.com 150 Felker St #D http://www.LearnByDestroying.com Santa Cruz CA 95060 http://802.11junk.com Skype: JeffLiebermann AE6KS 831-336-2558 |

If there is an active Digital TV station on channel 6 in your area, you will get noise. When TV was analog, you used to be able to hear the sound carrier of Ch 6 at the bottom of the FM radio band. mark |

If your computer dont have a SD card slot, just buy a USB plug in SD card reader, which sell for around $10 at places like Walmart. (Or check ebay). They are made to view and copy your camera photos to a computer, but you can write to them, make folders and so on, just like you do on a flash drive. Actually, once they are plugged into one of those adaptors, you essentially have a flash drive. A 32gb SD card can store thousands of MP3 files. One card can likely store your whole music collection. Then you just plug that SDcard into your car's sound system if it has that option. Those MP3 players that transmit a FM signal to a car radio, are not the greatest. At least not the ones I have tried. Poor reception and poor sound quality. They work best when they are in clear view of your car's antenna (usually on the dash). |

That was analog TV. I was wondering what a digital signal did now, or if tv still used that low FM band anymore. I no longer live where there is a CH6 tv signal. |
