Apparently they are not for sale there.

A lot of bike motors come from China and my experience is that
almost anything from China is iffey: might be OK, might be
junk... even the same make/model may vary greatly. I had one
item where they couldn't even thread a shaft properly and it had
to be replaced.

So, unless you can afford top dollar for something from a
European maker, the firewall between you and the Chinese maker
becomes important.

It's not whether something is going to go wrong or not. Things
*will* go wrong. Instead, it's how the retailer handles it.

I bought a complete eBike conversion kit from one little guy and
got what I'm pretty sure is a bad battery. His only response
was to tell me to ship it to some middleman via hazmat shipping
and see what the middleman says. This guy didn't even have
batteries in stock.

OTOH, I bought a motor from ebikes.ca, had an issue with a noise
from the motor, and they made it right immediately and
painlessly. I would definitely recommend these guys to anybody
they will ship to.

They are the manufacturer. I assumed you could find your own distributor
with a modicum of googling, or perhaps asking the manufacturer for names
of distributors in your area, *after* you've perused the manufacturer's
specs to select the correct motor for your application. I stand
unequivocally by my assertion that you will not find a better hub motor
than Heinzmann.

I don't remember a time when Ford was good in eu. In the seventies they
had nice looking cars and comfy, but the fuel consumption was too high
and they had rust problems. People drove 20l/100KM Fords in the
seventies, with a price of 11.7 Schilling per liter gasoline, that is
approximately a dollar today.
Today Fords are ugly and crappy (cheap though).

I go well with a II Golf/Jetta (built 1983-92). Affordable parts,
well-grounded design makes repair easy, light chassis and an
unbelieveable life-span.... not to mention the overdose of wax they
spent to the cavities. But only from 88-92, before they had also rust
problems.
Mine (1990 Jetta, 90HP, 1.8litres) is similar looking to the america
edition, but 200 Kilo lighter and some HP less. 6.4litres/100KM
minimum; 7 to 7.5 litres nominally ;-).

I drive a Dodge Dakota pickup truck. I am disabled and can't get in
anything smaller, with my long legs. I've tried, and I have the scars
to prove it. :(

that assumes that all the power of the supply is actually used.
I'm sure there is some reserve capacity there.

"max input power" is not "actual used power".

Well, no. I'm not a power user. What little rendering I do is with
bacon fat.

Actually, I don't know. I don't have any customers with such machines
and have had zero experience with high power graphic workstations
(other than early 1980's Applicon CAD stations) or game machines. I
have worked on various network servers, which do burn such power
levels. I have looked at a 3D MRI image processor, which had some
manner of dedicated processor inside, but it certainly wasn't belching
400 watts of heat (my estimate by the amount of fan noise).

Ok, I stand corrected. I've been assuming that the CPU's are doing
most of the power dissipation. I didn't think of a dedicated graphics
processor or whatever the BGA chips are doing. Do you have a gun
style IR thermometer? I use that to determine if anything is running
hot. I use a black (non-reflective) cardboard tube attached to the
lens to prevent it from picking up adjacent components. Incidentally,
I have yet to find one where the laser dot actually points to where
the device is measuring when in close proximity. You can also get a
rough idea of how much effort is going into cooling. If the BGA's
burn more power than the CPU's, then they're going to need more
massive heat sinks and better air cooling. At 400 watts, I would
think they would have gone to heat pipes and external radiators or
maybe liquid cooling.

Incidentally, I repaired a P4 motherboard yesterday which used Artic
Silver. My guess is that there was about 5 times as much Artic Silver
smeared over the CPU (and down the sides where it does nothing) as
necessary. The stuff down the sides was still fluid, so at $10 for
3.5 grams, I saved the excess.

Heh...reminds me of a previously repaired (not by me) QSC PLX series amp
I opened up and scraped about a pound of white paste out of it.

Hi!

Well, it used to be. ;-)

The Pentium 4 "Pres-hot" didn't earn that derogatory nickname for nothin'. I
cringe to think of multi-processor systems and how much heat they were
dumping into the air. I had a 3.4GHz Prescott P4 in a Dell Dimension 8300.
On hot days, it had no problem equaling the sound volume of a small canister
vacuum cleaner.

> 1. The less silicon grease used, the better.

I remember reading that somewhere. I'm not sure that everyone--including
some major manufacturers--got the memo. After removing the STK-2038 II
module from my Techics SA-310 receiver, I found a massive amount of heatsink
compound behind it. Wow.

> 2. All heat sinks and transistor bases are NOT flat.

Somtimes not by a *long* shot!

> 3. Compression pressure is important. None of the standard spring

Really? I find that extremely surprising, especially as firmly as some of
them hold on. They really do *seem* to be doing a good job.

Sometimes the heatsink compound has established a tight enough bond that the
processor comes out firmly glued to the bottom of the heatsink, without so
much as releasing the ZIF socket lever. I've seen that on Socket 478 and
AM2+ boxen before. It's kind of scary to look down and realize the processor
isn't where it should be!

Sorry, the only letter I could read on the top was "N" which when I
checked online mentioned a zener diode. However it is labeled Q3 which
suggests otherwise. I have since found out it is an N channel MOSFET. It
does have 3 pins tied on one side, 4 on the other and a single pin. It
is short-circuit to all pins.

I have had great success using 'Freecycle' <http://www.freecycle.org> to
dispose of old electronics. It's been a win-win for me - I get rid of
something I don't want, and the person picking it up is usually
delighted to have it.

I've also donated similar items to Goodwill. In Southern California at
least, they will take just about any electronic device, working or not.

Hi!

I don't usually do so, but then again, I don't make a habit of working on
that stuff and I won't touch rear projection TVs.

I usually do pull parts like speakers, power cords and "other stuff" that
might be useful in other projects. My 1997 vintage Magnavox 19" table TV got
a speaker from a Zenith 27" console when the original speaker was damaged.

When people have asked me about repairing their old RPTV, I have usually
always suggested that they look at something newer. Many times the existing
set has just been worn out from lots of watching or troublesome all of its
life.

> The same with CRT based computer monitors. I have a nice 19"
> high end NEC that is working that i cannot sell for $20.

On the other hand, I do favor these, for one big reason: If you have to run
at less than native resolution, a CRT monitor is really the *only* way to go
and still have a clear, sharp display. LCDs do better at this than they used
to, but you can still see the clear signs of scaling the image up to fit.

I still have many CRTs, lots of 17" ones, a few SVGA/VGA 14 and 15 inchers,
a monochrome VGA display or two and two 19" units. There's also one 25" NEC
behemoth that works but has a well used picture tube. I don't see myself
getting rid of these because they work, there's really nothing wrong with
them and they are most definitely paid for. The monochrome displays are used
on devices where a text console is only occasionally needed.

When my one NEC MultiSync 95 died from bad filter caps, I did opt to fix it.

It's true enough that you can't save everything.

That would annoy me, but then again, I'm a big-time trashpicker. Sometimes I
have to work quite hard to say "no" to something that I see. It doesn't
matter what. Some things I fix up and sell cheap.

I wouldn't have needed the TV, but I would have taken you up on the monitor.
Someone gave me a 27" Sanyo TV from 1999 in like new condition. Works like
new as well...and was very well kept by a person who kept all the pieces:
book, remote, box and other goodies. I'll probably have it for a long time,
I can't recall the last time I've watched TV.

My grandfather has what must be one of the last console TVs made, a 2008
Zenith model with a 27" CRT. I think they finally threw in the towel on
those at last. Too bad, I'm one of those rare folks who liked them and would
have bought one new. (And I'm only 27!)

That console radio probably *does* have some value to the right person.
Tried asking in rec.antiques.radio+phono or a swap meet in your area?

I was given a Technics SX-KN800 keyboard and am trying to repair it. I have
opened it up and the six or so PCB's are easy to get at. The symptom is no
audio. The PA thumps through the speakers on turn off and the PA has power
supply OK so it is not a concern at the moment. The line out has no audio
either. Of course it is possible that a crash has occured but I cannot find
a reset so far. No audio is getting to the PA. I could not find any signal
at the master volume either, though it may not have real signal at it.

I believe it was made early to mid 90's. There are a lot of Technics
proprietery chips in it. I have an op manual for a KN1000 which is similar,
but no schematics appear anywhere I have seen.

What I would like to know is a general question about how the audio signal
is generated from the PCM pulse stream. It may be a simple LPF from a
digital chip which regenerates the audio, or there may be a specialised
audio chip to look for? If I can't go much further I will have to junk it.

I have an electronic Kenmore refrigerator 596.50013100. I bought it
from a private party over a year ago and it has been working great
until now. It seems very well made, overall.

Yesterday it started beeping and displaying a strange trouble signal:

http://igor.chudov.com/tmp/Kenmore-Trouble.jpg

It is right above the word "Kenmore", is red and looks like a crossed
lock and an exclamation.

The temperature in the unit has been rising since then and clearly, it
is not cooling anything. Right now both freezer and fridge are at 46
degrees F.

I tried calling Kenmore, but could only speak to dummies who are
forbidden to give any diagnostics.

My question is WTF does this sign mean? It is meant to tell me
something.

Thanks

Don't know, but it's obviously a bar across a thermometer symbol.
Could mean anything from "it ain't cooling" (Duh.) to the
thermocouple/thermopile/temperature sensor's dirty. Manual ought to
say if you can find one. Good luck.

Pete, the manual is here:

This may be of some assistance in determining your code.

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/repairtips/repairtips_appliance+fault+codes.aspx#Sears%20/%20Kenmore%20Fault%20Codes

It gives a listing of who actually made your applience, so you can then
look for their trouble codes

Yup, that's pretty useless. Maybe there's a service manual, but a
cursory google didn't turn up anything useful. There's still stuff
you could inspect, like is the compressor running, and are the coils
dirty. Since it's showing the temperature, it probably isn't the
temperature sensor.

That's a picture of an English bobby. Obviously the food's been rioting
and they've hauled the compressor of to quod.

Check the condenser fan motor (under the grill at the back most
likely). Those things tend to be weak, even a barely motivated dust
bunny can stop them from turning. I had it happen to my fridge
recently. The fan motor would only start if I gave it a little help.
Dismantled the motor (not designed to be serviceable, but no sweat),
cleaned and reassembled, and it worked fine for a week until the new
one came. About $30 delivered. If you discover that the fan is the
culprit and can't get it going while waiting for the replacement, then
just aim a portable fan so that it moves air across the coils.

I had a Eureka moment.

I understand what the sign means.

It means not much. It is a crossed thermometer and it means that the
fridge is unable to hold the preset temperature. Duh.

Why is it unable to do so, is the $64,000 question.

I opened up the back. I observe the following:

1) The condenser fan is running
2) The compressor (big heavy black part with copper pipes going in and
out of it) is quite hot to touch and is seemingly not running.

Sometimes there are hidden coils in the freezer. An electric heater on a
timer will defrost these. If that is not working, it will be a solid block
of ice.

Try putting all your food in ice chests and let it defrost for 24 hours with
doors open (unplug it). Then plug it back in and see if it works.

If it works for a few weeks, then same problem again, then suspect the
defrost heater/timer.

As to fixing, if it is an old refrigerator, get a new one as those save
electricity and will pay for themselves in 5 years or so.

Hi!

That wouldn't be an indication of a "child safety lock" would it?

If so, try holding each button down for a few seconds to see if one shuts it
off. I'd think that maybe such a thing would be in the manual, but who
knows?

BALTIMORE -- The man accused of stabbing several people at a high school
reunion over the weekend was denied bail on Monday.

During the bail review, 28-year-old James Dixon had very little to say
and gave no clues as to what happened over the weekend, 11 News reporter
Lisa Robinson said. The judge called Dixon a serious risk to public
safety and a flight risk.

Dixon's arrest on first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder
charges followed a weekend party at the Patapsco Arena in south
Baltimore during a class reunion of Walbrook High School graduates who
attended the school from 1995 to 2005.

Police said there was an altercation inside and that Dixon stabbed six
people, killing one of them, 23-year-old Carrington McNutt.

The charging documents give little information about a motive, Robinson
reported.

The documents said that when police arrived at the arena at about 1 a.m.
Saturday for reports of a shooting, they found "an unknown black male
lying face-up in a pool of blood." The document stated that the police
officer who responded "was unable to determine the exact location of the
victim's wounds due to the large amount of blood on his face."

The document said that detectives later found out that the victim had
not been shot and had instead suffered several stab wounds to the neck
and head. The documents said the victim was taken to Shock Trauma, where
he died a little later.

The police report didn't list the names of any witnesses to protect them
from retaliation, Robinson reported.

Dixon's public defender noted in court that there are questions about
who those witnesses are and how they came to identify Dixon.

The lawyer said that Dixon has a 10th-grade education and went to
Douglass High School before getting his GED. She said he had been
working at a Shop and Save for the last two years.

The state pre-trial investigator said in court that Dixon has seven
prior convictions for various offenses.

LITTLETON, Colo. - Authorities have arrested a third suspect in
connection with a brutal assault on a Walmart worker in Littleton which
was caught on video earlier this month.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says Wayne Vigil, the man seen
pushing a shopping cart containing stolen goods, was arrested after tips
from media coverage.

The incident happened Aug. 20 at the Walmart located at 13240 W. Cole
Mine Ave.

Investigators say three Latino men left the garden center of the store
pushing a shopping cart filled with stolen merchandise, which set off an
alarm when they went through a door.

A male Walmart employee tried to stop the suspects on the sidewalk in
front of the store, at which point one of them struck the employee on
the side of the head, knocking him face-first into the shopping cart,
officials said.

He sustained -what the Sheriff's Office called- "serious bodily injury."

In surveillance video released by the Sheriff's Office, the suspects are
seen driving off in a dark-colored SUV as the victim struggles to get to
his feet while covering a wound on his face. (Watch Video)

Vigil joins suspects Joe Lucero, 34, and Jose Cruz, 19, who were
previously arrested.

The getaway driver remains at large.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office tip-line
at 303-271-5612.

A mugging victim's dog "took a bite outta crime" Saturday night,
chomping down on the suspect's leg as he ran away with the dog owner's
wallet.

The incident happened at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday in Elver Park on the
city's southwest side, Madison police said.

According to the police report, the 31-year-old Madison man was running
with his 70-pound dog on a bike path near a bridge in the park, when he
heard footsteps behind him.

"Then he felt an object being pushed into his lower back," said police
spokesman Joel DeSpain. "The robber told him not to be stupid as he
groped around in the victim's pockets."

The suspect took the wallet and was about to run when the dog chomped
down on the mugger's leg.

"He was still able to get away," DeSpain said.

The suspect is a black male, 30-35 years old, 5 feet, 7 inches to 5
feet, 10 inches tall, short hair, wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans.

Henrico Police are searching for a suspect accused shooting an elderly
man during an attempted robbery Saturday.

The victim was walking with a 6-year-old to the store in the 6000 block
of Nine Mile Road late Saturday evening when they were approached by a
suspect armed with a handgun. The suspect demanded money from the
victim, then shot him when the victim said he had no money.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot. The 6 year old was not injured
in the incident.

The gun shot victim, identified by police as John Vaughan, is recovering
in the hospital from serious injuries.

The suspect is described as a black male, possibly a teenager, standing
about 5 foot 9 with a thin build. Police said he has short hair and was
last seen wearing a white tee shirt and gray pants.

Investigators said a nearby group of teenagers likely witnessed the
incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at
780-1000.

Cordele, GA (WALB) – A Cordele man is accused of viciously killing a
dog while burglarizing his neighbor's house.

There are new details on the story we told you about last week.
27-year-old John Frank Dunlap is charged with burglary and aggravated
cruelty to animals, both felonies.

Police say Dunlap broke into Michael Shirah's home August 21st, and
stabbed his ten year old toy poodle 'Sheila' at least four times with a
pair of scissors.

A TV, game system, money and jewelry were stolen. Police say they found
all Shirah's stolen items in Dunlap's home.

Dunlap is being held in the Crisp County jail. Shirah's friends say his
arrest has helped Shelia's owners with their grief.

SAN ANTONIO -- A teenager is behind bars after police were able to track
him down using a high school yearbook. The 17-year-old robbery suspect
was arrested Saturday. Police say he and three others robbed another
teen on South Mittman near Schley on the east side.

According to an arrest warrant obtained by News 4 WOAI, Anthony Tello
went up to the victim and asked to borrow his cell phone. When the
victim handed him the phone, police say Tello put a gun to his head and
demanded his stuff.

The warrant says the victim put his hands up and the four men took his
necklace, wallet, cash, keys and tennis shoes.

The victim told police he recognized the suspect from school. Police
were able to find Tello using a Highlands High School yearbook.

Tello is in the Bexar County Jail charged with aggravated robbery with a
deadly weapon. His bond is set at $75,000.

BRENHAM, Texas - A fugitive accused of forcing a local teenager to
choose between prostitution or torture was arrested in Brenham.

Christopher Crawford, 24, is charged with aggravated assault causing
serious bodily injury. More charges could follow.

Investigators say Crawford beat the then 15-year-old Shellysia Milton on
and off for the past 3 years if she didn't do what she was told.

Now 18, Milton is permanently scarred - her eye droops and she still
shows signs of visible swelling on her face.

Brenham Police heard about Crawford on a FOX 26 News Report that ran on
Friday, a police spokesman said.

Members of the Fushion Unit sent the information in that report to their
patrol officers.

On Monday around 11:40 a.m., an officer spotted Crawford in the 700
block of Campbell Street and arrested him without incident.

Investigators say Crawford beat the then 15-year-old Shellysia Milton on
and off for the past 3 years if she didn't do what she was told.

Crawford allegedly forced Milton into prostitution every day.

Now 18, Milton is permanently scarred - her eye droops and she still
shows signs of visible swelling on her face.

It is unknown if he'll be extradited to Harris County.

Have you any idea just how much processing power it takes to run a
user-interactive story in real time, and then to 3D render the graphics in
real time ? Do you think that they rate the 12v PSU for 23.5 amps in one
version, and 32 amps in the other, for fun ? Those are not real questions,
because I know full well when you stop and think about it, you know the
answers, Jeff.

I've just looked at the rating plate on the bottom of one of the cases, and
it is 240v (nominal UK line voltage) at 1.8 amps. I make that a maximum
input power of around 430 watts. It's a switching PSU, so I reckon that we
can rate that as being at the very worst 80% efficient, so that's still 345
watts potentially going somewhere. I'm prepared to go with 45 watts into
ancillary circuitry on the board, which still leaves around 300 watts going
somewhere. Perhaps I'm being naive, but my best guess is that it's
disappearing into the two bloody great BGAs which the manufacturers are
trying their utmost to heatsink. If you try to run one of these machines
with the heatsinking not in place, it goes into thermal protect in about 5
seconds - and all it's doing then is booting. The heatplates on the BGAs are
at this point hot enough to take your fingerprints off ...

Nope, I'm pretty sure that these two puppies are good for 150 watts apiece,
when the machine is doing some real work.

I don't see the point, I'm pretty confident "they arent going to make a
comeback".

Here in Chicago you can still toss them in the alley and the city will take
them as part of the regular trash pickup. They "suggest" bringing them to a
recycle center, but isn't mandatory as with other major cities.

I hate doing that because the truck guys (can collectors, scrap dudes) will
smash off the back, usually breaking the tube, just to grab the copper off
the defection coil. Then you have a pile of broken glass to deal with.

I had both a 35" Zenith System 3 tv and 21" Mits Diamond Scan monitor and
couldn't give either of them away. Both worked as well as you expected for
their age, needed zero repairs and probably were considered "good
condition". No interest at all.

So why bother parting them out, if no one wants it free, whole and working,
who is going to get one fixed where the parts would of use?

Heh, I still have 3 or 4 console tv's and one Grundig console radio down in
the basement for the same reason, 20 years ago I figured they would be
parted out and worth something.

Now it looks like I have pay 1-800-junk to get rid of them.

I've been trying to clean the office for the last month, with no luck.
I tend to keep parts and boards so I can cannibalize parts to fix
other machines. The amount of space this takes is far larger than I'm
willing to allow. Just calculating the cost per vertical square foot
component of my office rent is enough to convince me that saving old
parts is more expensive than just buying new parts. It's a habit of a
lifetime, and very difficult to break. However, when I find that I
have to move boxes of junk in order to just make room on the bench for
new repairs, it's time to clean house. I may regret having tossed
some handy part or board, but that will come later. Right now, I need
the space.

Googling.... See the "acid resistance" and "alkali resistance"
sections at:
<http://www.porcelainenamel.com/pei503.htm>
The degree of attack by acid solution on porcelain enamels
appears to depend less on the type of solution than on its pH.

"Chemical Resistance of Porcelain Enamel at various Temperature
Levels"
<http://www.zurn.com/operations/specdrain/pages/TechnicalInformation/Receptors/OF52.pdf>
Looks very good for both base and acidic. However, hot ammonium
hydroxide (common household ammonia) looks like a potential problem. I
usually mix the stuff with hot water when washing the floor and dump
it in the toilet. It's not concentrated, but it might cause a problem
because it's warm.

I stand corrected.

Some of the reader comments are rather interesting. Still, with any
of these "powerful" processors, a conventional air cooled machine is
going to have a very hot breath and a rather large power supply. I
just don't see this kind of power dissipation in a "dedicated game
machine". Measuring the AC mains power consumption should settle the
matter.

Sony Vegas software will push your processor usage up to nearly 100%
and stay there for minutes. My Phenom II 955 machine normally idles
115-120 Watts but will peak about 100 more while Vegas is rendering a
file. I'm almost tempted to try a 6 core processor to see what
happens.

I use Kino in linux to render raw DV capture. Can't find a suitable linux
app to create dvd containers/structure etc.. in linux so I use a fairly
inexpensive app called DVDtoX from VSO. Fast 10x frame rates on VBR video
encoding usually 2000KB/s. Easy to use nice output. tried Sony DVD
Architect trial, more than I needed. Linux is much more efficient at
processor usage but applications aren't up to par.

CHICAGO - A 13-year-old boy is charged in the acid attack that severely
burned a 10-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl.

The suspect was cited in a juvenile delinquency petition, accused of
heinous battery, and turned over to Juvenile Court for processing.

Nala Armstrong, 11, and Adrian Bennett, 10, were hospitalized in serious
condition after having sulfuric acid poured over on them Tuesday
afternoon. It happened just after 2 p.m. at an apartment complex in the
900 block of West Garfield.

The mother of Nala Armstrong said her daughter suffered second and third
degree burns to her entire body after a 13-year-old boy poured a
draino-type acid on her from a second floor porch.

"She's got burns to her head, face, chest and legs, her bracelet even
melted into her wrist," said Gwendolyn Davis.

10-year-old Adrian Bennet suffered burns to his head, neck and back.

"The chemical left black marks on his back," said Loretta Corbett, the
boy's mother.

The suspect's mother said in court Wednesday her son thought he was
tossing only a pail of water.

The mother said the boy had been playing at his cousin's South Side
house Tuesday. She said the kids all play together and they've never had
any problems.

Davis however said her daughter was attacked because she rejected
advances by the 13-year-old boy, the alleged attacker.

But the suspect's aunt, Denise McClendon, says she doesn't believe that.

"He's too young for a girlfriend anyway. He didn't do it intentionally,
he kicked it over and it spilled below into the kids," she says.

Both teens remain hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Comer
Children's hospital but are expected to be transferred to the burn unit.

Dr. Lawrence Gottleib, director of Comer's burn unit, said their burns
could require surgery and more than a week of hospitalization.

The St. Mary's County Bureau of Criminal Investigations says police
responded to a reported shooting at a home on Lexwood Drive in Lexington

They found 22-year-old Antonio Nathaniel Pollard Jr. shot in the head.
Pollard later died at a hospital.

Officials say 24-year-old Andrew Allen Carter of Lexington Park fled the
scene before officers arrived.

On Monday, they say detectives and U.S. Marshals found Carter at a home
in Baltimore and arrested him.

Carter faces first-degree murder charges in Pollard's death. Police say
he was wanted on a probation violation in Worchester County on a past
robbery conviction.

WALTERBORO — Franklin Smalls was picking up his newspaper from his front
yard Sunday morning when he heard someone crying.

Smalls noticed a woman walking down a nearby street. "She was saying,
'Help me. Mister, help me.'"

As she came closer, Smalls realized the woman was naked, holding her
shoes. She recognized Smalls, a city councilman, and told him she had
been raped. His wife immediately got her a nightgown while he called police.

Walterboro police say a man introduced himself to the 62-year-old woman
as she was walking to visit her husband at a nursing home about 8 a.m.

The victim told police she was walking a path from North Lemacks Street
to Sweat Street when a man walked up to her from behind and startled her
about 8 a.m. He held out his hand and identified himself as "Thomas,"
according to an incident report released Monday.

The suspect grabbed her hand, covered her mouth with his other hand and
forced her into the woods where he removed her clothes and sexually
assaulted her, according to the report. The suspect then grabbed her
clothes and ran deeper into the woods.

Her clothes were recovered near where the crime happened, according to
the report. The victim has been released from a local hospital, police said.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 30s or 40s with a dark
complexion, facial hair and a medium haircut. He wore black pants and a
gray or blue T-shirt.

The incident comes on the heels of multiple shootings within the city
over the last year, including a gang-related drive-by shooting last year
that left three people dead. Smalls, a councilman for 20 years, said
they've not had a rape like this in the city before and that these types
of crimes can happen anywhere.

"Walterboro is still a safe place," Smalls said. "When I consider all
the things happening in other places, Walterboro is still a safe place
to visit, a safe place to live."

He said the city has acknowledged and addressed some of the problems its
had. Earlier this year, state agents rounded up several gang members
allegedly connected to the drive-by shooting on Gerideau Street.

"I think we handle it pretty good," he said.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the police
department at 843-549-1811 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.

http://www.tampabay.com/news/courts/criminal/article1118421.ece

TAMPA — Jury selection is underway in the first case against Kendrick
Morris, a 19-year-old accused of raping a teenage girl at the
Bloomingdale library in 2008 and a 61-year-old daycare worker in 2007.

This week, Morris will stand trial in the day care case.

In the early morning of June 28, 2007, at the Children's Lighthouse Day
Care Center in the Clair-Mel area, a masked man with a knife came in
behind a day care worker, ordered her to the floor and asked for money,
she told investigators. She said he made her remove her clothes and
raped her.

The victim ran to the teachers' bathroom, locked herself in and began
yelling and banging on the wall to attract attention. Deputies later
found her naked in the driveway. They were able to collect DNA.

Morris lived three blocks away from the day care.

Authorities said they linked the DNA to Morris that following April,
after he was accused of brutally raping an East Bay High School senior
outside the Bloomingdale library.

In this week's case, he is charged with five counts: Armed burglary of a
structure with assault or battery, attempted robbery with a deadly
weapon, two counts of sexual battery and one of attempted sexual
battery, all with a deadly weapon.

Morris' public defenders have argued that it will be impossible to seat
an impartial jury today because of the extensive media coverage the teen
defendant has gotten. Hillsborough Circuit Judge Chet A. Tharpe denied
their request to move the trial to another city.

Every seat in the courtroom is taken by a potential juror, and attorneys
are beginning to screen the pool of 98.

First order of business: A 16-question form jurors will fill out, in
which they disclose how exposed they have been to coverage. The
questionnaire asks whether they follow the news, how and how often, if
they've ever heard of Kendrick Morris or if they've participated in a
fundraiser for a crime victim.

It asks to circle yes or no for 10 cases, under have you ever read about
or regularly followed any of the following news stories:

"Bayshore rapist."

"Walker Middle School Assault."

"Casey Anthony case."

"Bloomingdale Library Rape."

Attorneys are calling some individual jurors into a back room to
question them.

A 24-year-old Tallahassee man was charged with grand theft retail at
9:26 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26 in connection with a theft case at the
Crawfordville Wal-Mart, according to Sheriff David Harvey.

Witnesses in the store reported that Darrell Timothy Hall allegedly left
the store with a latched tote full of merchandise without paying for the
items. Traffic Unit Deputy Will Hudson was conducting an unrelated
traffic stop on U.S. Highway 319 when he observed the suspect vehicle
which had just left the store parking area. He conducted a traffic stop
of Hall's vehicle south of the Leon County line.

Hall told the deputy that he had been at Wal-Mart earlier and did not
have a receipt for the 75 items inside the tote. Deputy Hudson returned
to the store with Hall and matched his suspect with Wal-Mart
surveillance evidence. Three witnesses at the store also provided sworn
affidavits stating they observed the suspect leave the store without
paying for the merchandise which was later valued at $483.

Hall was transported to the Wakulla County Jail where he remains under a
$5,000 bond. Deputy Taff Stokley also investigated.
