I don't see the point, I'm pretty confident "they arent going to make a
comeback".

Here in Chicago you can still toss them in the alley and the city will take
them as part of the regular trash pickup. They "suggest" bringing them to a
recycle center, but isn't mandatory as with other major cities.

I hate doing that because the truck guys (can collectors, scrap dudes) will
smash off the back, usually breaking the tube, just to grab the copper off
the defection coil. Then you have a pile of broken glass to deal with.

I had both a 35" Zenith System 3 tv and 21" Mits Diamond Scan monitor and
couldn't give either of them away. Both worked as well as you expected for
their age, needed zero repairs and probably were considered "good
condition". No interest at all.

So why bother parting them out, if no one wants it free, whole and working,
who is going to get one fixed where the parts would of use?

Heh, I still have 3 or 4 console tv's and one Grundig console radio down in
the basement for the same reason, 20 years ago I figured they would be
parted out and worth something.

Now it looks like I have pay 1-800-junk to get rid of them.

I've been trying to clean the office for the last month, with no luck.
I tend to keep parts and boards so I can cannibalize parts to fix
other machines. The amount of space this takes is far larger than I'm
willing to allow. Just calculating the cost per vertical square foot
component of my office rent is enough to convince me that saving old
parts is more expensive than just buying new parts. It's a habit of a
lifetime, and very difficult to break. However, when I find that I
have to move boxes of junk in order to just make room on the bench for
new repairs, it's time to clean house. I may regret having tossed
some handy part or board, but that will come later. Right now, I need
the space.

Googling.... See the "acid resistance" and "alkali resistance"
sections at:
<http://www.porcelainenamel.com/pei503.htm>
The degree of attack by acid solution on porcelain enamels
appears to depend less on the type of solution than on its pH.

"Chemical Resistance of Porcelain Enamel at various Temperature
Levels"
<http://www.zurn.com/operations/specdrain/pages/TechnicalInformation/Receptors/OF52.pdf>
Looks very good for both base and acidic. However, hot ammonium
hydroxide (common household ammonia) looks like a potential problem. I
usually mix the stuff with hot water when washing the floor and dump
it in the toilet. It's not concentrated, but it might cause a problem
because it's warm.

I stand corrected.

Some of the reader comments are rather interesting. Still, with any
of these "powerful" processors, a conventional air cooled machine is
going to have a very hot breath and a rather large power supply. I
just don't see this kind of power dissipation in a "dedicated game
machine". Measuring the AC mains power consumption should settle the
matter.

Sony Vegas software will push your processor usage up to nearly 100%
and stay there for minutes. My Phenom II 955 machine normally idles
115-120 Watts but will peak about 100 more while Vegas is rendering a
file. I'm almost tempted to try a 6 core processor to see what
happens.

I use Kino in linux to render raw DV capture. Can't find a suitable linux
app to create dvd containers/structure etc.. in linux so I use a fairly
inexpensive app called DVDtoX from VSO. Fast 10x frame rates on VBR video
encoding usually 2000KB/s. Easy to use nice output. tried Sony DVD
Architect trial, more than I needed. Linux is much more efficient at
processor usage but applications aren't up to par.

http://www.wgntv.com/news/wgntv-children-burned-aug24,0,2016686.story

CHICAGO - A 13-year-old boy is charged in the acid attack that severely
burned a 10-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl.

The suspect was cited in a juvenile delinquency petition, accused of
heinous battery, and turned over to Juvenile Court for processing.

Nala Armstrong, 11, and Adrian Bennett, 10, were hospitalized in serious
condition after having sulfuric acid poured over on them Tuesday
afternoon. It happened just after 2 p.m. at an apartment complex in the
900 block of West Garfield.

The mother of Nala Armstrong said her daughter suffered second and third
degree burns to her entire body after a 13-year-old boy poured a
draino-type acid on her from a second floor porch.

"She's got burns to her head, face, chest and legs, her bracelet even
melted into her wrist," said Gwendolyn Davis.

10-year-old Adrian Bennet suffered burns to his head, neck and back.

"The chemical left black marks on his back," said Loretta Corbett, the
boy's mother.

The suspect's mother said in court Wednesday her son thought he was
tossing only a pail of water.

The mother said the boy had been playing at his cousin's South Side
house Tuesday. She said the kids all play together and they've never had
any problems.

Davis however said her daughter was attacked because she rejected
advances by the 13-year-old boy, the alleged attacker.

But the suspect's aunt, Denise McClendon, says she doesn't believe that.

"He's too young for a girlfriend anyway. He didn't do it intentionally,
he kicked it over and it spilled below into the kids," she says.

Both teens remain hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Comer
Children's hospital but are expected to be transferred to the burn unit.

Dr. Lawrence Gottleib, director of Comer's burn unit, said their burns
could require surgery and more than a week of hospitalization.

Authorities say they caught up with a suspect in a fatal St. Mary's
County shooting at a home in Baltimore.

The St. Mary's County Bureau of Criminal Investigations says police
responded to a reported shooting at a home on Lexwood Drive in Lexington
Park on Saturday.

They found 22-year-old Antonio Nathaniel Pollard Jr. shot in the head.
Pollard later died at a hospital.

Officials say 24-year-old Andrew Allen Carter of Lexington Park fled the
scene before officers arrived.

On Monday, they say detectives and U.S. Marshals found Carter at a home
in Baltimore and arrested him.

Carter faces first-degree murder charges in Pollard's death. Police say
he was wanted on a probation violation in Worchester County on a past
robbery conviction.

WALTERBORO — Franklin Smalls was picking up his newspaper from his front
yard Sunday morning when he heard someone crying.

Smalls noticed a woman walking down a nearby street. "She was saying,
'Help me. Mister, help me.'"

As she came closer, Smalls realized the woman was naked, holding her
shoes. She recognized Smalls, a city councilman, and told him she had
been raped. His wife immediately got her a nightgown while he called police.

Walterboro police say a man introduced himself to the 62-year-old woman
as she was walking to visit her husband at a nursing home about 8 a.m.

The victim told police she was walking a path from North Lemacks Street
to Sweat Street when a man walked up to her from behind and startled her
about 8 a.m. He held out his hand and identified himself as "Thomas,"
according to an incident report released Monday.

The suspect grabbed her hand, covered her mouth with his other hand and
forced her into the woods where he removed her clothes and sexually
assaulted her, according to the report. The suspect then grabbed her
clothes and ran deeper into the woods.

Her clothes were recovered near where the crime happened, according to
the report. The victim has been released from a local hospital, police said.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 30s or 40s with a dark
complexion, facial hair and a medium haircut. He wore black pants and a
gray or blue T-shirt.

The incident comes on the heels of multiple shootings within the city
over the last year, including a gang-related drive-by shooting last year
that left three people dead. Smalls, a councilman for 20 years, said
they've not had a rape like this in the city before and that these types
of crimes can happen anywhere.

"Walterboro is still a safe place," Smalls said. "When I consider all
the things happening in other places, Walterboro is still a safe place
to visit, a safe place to live."

He said the city has acknowledged and addressed some of the problems its
had. Earlier this year, state agents rounded up several gang members
allegedly connected to the drive-by shooting on Gerideau Street.

"I think we handle it pretty good," he said.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the police
department at 843-549-1811 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.

TAMPA — Jury selection is underway in the first case against Kendrick
Morris, a 19-year-old accused of raping a teenage girl at the
Bloomingdale library in 2008 and a 61-year-old daycare worker in 2007.

This week, Morris will stand trial in the day care case.

In the early morning of June 28, 2007, at the Children's Lighthouse Day
Care Center in the Clair-Mel area, a masked man with a knife came in
behind a day care worker, ordered her to the floor and asked for money,
she told investigators. She said he made her remove her clothes and
raped her.

The victim ran to the teachers' bathroom, locked herself in and began
yelling and banging on the wall to attract attention. Deputies later
found her naked in the driveway. They were able to collect DNA.

Morris lived three blocks away from the day care.

Authorities said they linked the DNA to Morris that following April,
after he was accused of brutally raping an East Bay High School senior
outside the Bloomingdale library.

In this week's case, he is charged with five counts: Armed burglary of a
structure with assault or battery, attempted robbery with a deadly
weapon, two counts of sexual battery and one of attempted sexual
battery, all with a deadly weapon.

Morris' public defenders have argued that it will be impossible to seat
an impartial jury today because of the extensive media coverage the teen
defendant has gotten. Hillsborough Circuit Judge Chet A. Tharpe denied
their request to move the trial to another city.

Every seat in the courtroom is taken by a potential juror, and attorneys
are beginning to screen the pool of 98.

First order of business: A 16-question form jurors will fill out, in
which they disclose how exposed they have been to coverage. The
questionnaire asks whether they follow the news, how and how often, if
they've ever heard of Kendrick Morris or if they've participated in a
fundraiser for a crime victim.

It asks to circle yes or no for 10 cases, under have you ever read about
or regularly followed any of the following news stories:

"Bayshore rapist."

"Walker Middle School Assault."

"Casey Anthony case."

"Bloomingdale Library Rape."

Attorneys are calling some individual jurors into a back room to
question them.

A 24-year-old Tallahassee man was charged with grand theft retail at
9:26 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26 in connection with a theft case at the
Crawfordville Wal-Mart, according to Sheriff David Harvey.

Witnesses in the store reported that Darrell Timothy Hall allegedly left
the store with a latched tote full of merchandise without paying for the
items. Traffic Unit Deputy Will Hudson was conducting an unrelated
traffic stop on U.S. Highway 319 when he observed the suspect vehicle
which had just left the store parking area. He conducted a traffic stop
of Hall's vehicle south of the Leon County line.

Hall told the deputy that he had been at Wal-Mart earlier and did not
have a receipt for the 75 items inside the tote. Deputy Hudson returned
to the store with Hall and matched his suspect with Wal-Mart
surveillance evidence. Three witnesses at the store also provided sworn
affidavits stating they observed the suspect leave the store without
paying for the merchandise which was later valued at $483.

Hall was transported to the Wakulla County Jail where he remains under a
$5,000 bond. Deputy Taff Stokley also investigated.
