The question of why is a good one ... the answer is it's sheer cost! :)

The factory new battery is on the web for about $150.
I'm worried about the knockoffs which cost around $50 to $75.

BTW, I found some more references of successful rebuild DIYs which I'm
going through now as my biggest problem at the moment is finding the
replacement cells (later it will be fitting it all back together).

Google around and you can find references to building a simple
spot-welder for batteries -- check the RC model airplane folks.

I will withhold further comments besides stating that he does

You really shouldn't dis 'Are You Being Served ?' It was an absolute
classic up there with the likes of Fawlty Towers ... The double entendre
with things like Mrs Slocombe's pussy, were really quite risque for British
TV at the time. Although I used to really enjoy Benny Hill for its pure
slapstick, the humour was much cruder than that of AYBS.

in Blair followed by Brown and their cronies. The jury is still out on their
replacements, but not looking too promising so far ...

And sometimes ones that are not visible. Just this week, I had a Sony
sort-of-portable thing on the bench. I took out every last obvious screw,
and no movement of the case halves at all. Then I discovered that the
speaker baffle was removable, and when removed, found two more screws behind
rubber bungs, When these were out, the case halves moved, but would still
not split. The final thing holding it together was the fact that the volume
pot was part of a board that remained in the rear case half, so its nut had
to come off. This fooled me for a few minutes, because I was expecting that
the control was part of the front board, and would come away with the front.

Well, not to belabor the point *too* much, but Fawlty Towers was
absolutely sublime compared to either one of those other two shows.

And I have to hand it to your Brits: there has never been *anything* on
television to equal "The Prisoner", and I doubt there will be in my
lifetime.

OK, thanks for the tip , but I just ordered the manual -- and it did indeed
contain the parts list. I hope to get to work on it next week. And oh, the
fuse was 3 amps slow, and the end tubes were 7534 (E130L, nothing like the
PL519 at all).

So in all, I got the information I needed, and now I just hope that I won't
need to hunt down new end tubes ...

Anyway, thanks again, best regards,

Richard Rasker

Kudos to you Mark, and others, that are inquisitive enough to closely
examine faulty/counterfeit parts, and report the incidents.

The previous instances of fake components that I've heard about were
epoxy-bodied parts.. from the early PC cache-RAM that was just epoxy and
pins, to power transistors and audio power amp modules more recently.

So much for global trade. As distributors source components, they're rarely
certain about the quality anymore, and possibly more concerned with only the
cost difference of various sources.

I think the chances of finding fake components is more likely when they're
purchased from a mega-huge supplier like present-day MCM.
Fakes from smaller suppliers can happen too, because the fakes seem to be
getting into numerous supply chains.

Everything has changed with China as a mainstream source of almost
everything. Another aspect might be that there is always an abundance of
surplus and transporting it globally is fairly inexpensive.
So what does a guy do with 3 million excess empty TO-3 cases? Scrap value
might not be very much.

I don't recall hearing of fake components being found in ECG/NTE packaging.
As I'm sure you know, the cost difference isn't because of the individual
packaging in the plastic bag.

I've purchased some hardware parts (coaxial power connectors) from some
China sellers on eBay recently, and the poor quality is surprising.
The difference in quality is far below that of (RS) that shack store, who's
parts aren't anywhere near high quality (but some of their products are from
Taiwan, not China).

Chinese manufacturers can produce decent quality parts, but they don't need
to when their parts are found in supply chains (not that I'm saying that
eBay is a supply chain for reliable parts).

I always hate it when someone posts a message asking for help, gets
replies and then doesn't bother to post what happened. Well, that
someone isn't me...
I gave up on that Explorer 3200 cable box. So I've re-connected the
box I'd been using before I bought the 3200 (it's an Explorer 940 - no
display or buttons on the front, and cheaply made - the box itself is
plastic - it's a piece of crap, but it works and doesn't tick...).
Thanks to everyone for trying to help.

What do you mean by 'scroll'? What is 'horizontal tracking'? It
appears this is a CRT based rear projector. Do you think it's worth
the bother to repair? I would bet there are dried out electrolytic
capacitors in there likely disrupting the sync processing but this TV
is not the place to learn about electronics repair. The parts cost
next to nothing but the skill and tools to do the job are pretty
serious. I ask again. Is it worth the bother?
