Anyone know what a blown one of these tiny sort of TD or LD fuses look like
http://www.llamma.com/PSP/repair/images/PSP_fuse/Ld-Fuse.jpg
http://www.llamma.com/PSP/repair/images/PSP_fuse/Td-Fuse.jpg
a component that size, as far as I can trace, is the only link to the rest
of the mobo and is o/c to ohms and 2V diode test. It is not burnt-pitted as
I thought but is a neat designed pit and otherwise no burnt appearance. Has
a labelled cover blown off , perhaps the fusing element passes through this
pit to the other land. Being black and only x30 scope, difficult to make
out, let alone probe

What do the user instructions say? Did you visit the manufacturer's
website for additional information on the product? Are you trying to
adapt an eSATA to external USB drive or visa versa ?

It's probably a device driver issue. If it has never worked for you than
it is a setup issue, not a repair issue.

Try posting to an approrpiate newsgroup. If there's software involved,
a good place to start would be with a newsgroup for the particular
operating system you use.

Hint: driver advice for linux or mac won't help you if you run windows,
advice for windows version 7 won't help you if you run windows xp,
98, etc.

Also, in the history of computing, believe it or not, there's been
more than one SATA-USB adapter sold. Why do you think knowing
the maker and model wouldn't be useful information?

You're right, Michael. This guy has no idea what's he talking about.

It's worth repeating what the fire marshal told me... Cheap power strips
(whether or not they have surge suppression) often have cheap breakers.
These can develop sufficiently high resistance to the point where they
overheat, even when the current draw is less than the maximum specified. He
said they were a relatively common cause of fires.

hmmmm... Now you are pushing my memory hard!!...LOL

Let's see.

Make a series circuit with the resistor (R) at the top and the component at
the bottom. Feed the whole thing with an AC voltage supply, top to bottom.

You will need a scope with horizontal input as well as the usual vertical
input and a floating ground or full differential input somwehere. (you work
out the logic .. maybe a floating AC voltage supply would be enough)

Hook the vertical input across the resistor and the horizontal input across
the component. Maybe the grounds together in the middle of components and
floating supply are good for that??? Been a few years.

Now your vertical trace on the scope indicates current (IR drop in the
resistor).
The horizontal trace indicates voltage drop across the component.
You will get the single curve of a component tracer on your scope.

***Component curves***
**shorted = vertical line
**open = horizontal line
**resistor same as R = 45 degree line
**capacitor = circle... me thinks round indicates matching impedance with R
at 60Hz??
** inductor = circle same as cap above??
**zener no current at lower voltages = horiz. line; no voltage increase at
higher voltages = vertical line = visible knee at zener voltage - use
calibrated scales for measurement
**avalanche diode = horizonatal line with foldback and shows current
(vertical at higher end)

Try it! So simple it stinks but is very visible clue. Watch your scope
grounding.

I got the scope, resistor(s). Variac + small transformer = variable AC
supply.

So describe away!

Thanks.

I would trace out the circuitry. If you have that, then the type of
diode may be obvious. For example if a diode is across a relay coil
to eliminate transcients, then any ordinary diode will work. For a
circuit for a desolder station, I would expect all the diode would be
common diodes, no zeners, no fast switching, no germanium. Just
something like a 1N4004.

TOPIC: Technics SL-1350 tonearm does not drop vertically.

This Technics SL-1350 had a misadjusted set down point and needed some
damping fluid. The arm now has a slow and smooth descent but the anti-skate
force is pulling it outward as the arm is slowly lowered. I've cleaned the
arm lifter but the tonearm occasionally still will pull to the right as the
arm drops. Sometimes, it misses the lead in groove and record completely.
Since the customer likes to stack his records for convenience sake, the lift
arm height cannot be lowered too much. The tonearm lift is no longer
available, part number SFPRT13003K. Anyone have a fix for this?

Thanks for your reply.

I'm confused.

While the arm is being lowered, it should be in contact (somewhere, above-
or below-deck) with the lifting mechanism, right? Should there not be
sufficient friction between the arm and the lifter to keep the anti-skating
force from moving the arm?

Yes, that is the crux of the problem. The rubber portion of the arm lifter
which contacts the tone arm seems to have lost its grip. There isn't enough
frictional force to counteract the anti-skating force.

Thanks for your reply.

A thin piece of rubber such as from a balloon maybe, superglued to the
underside of the tonearm above the lifter ?? A very slight 'dent' filed into
the lifter perhaps ??

The experts at sci.electronics.repair do. How about ToyotaNation.com?

I'd check solder joints and electrolytic capacitors. Clocks have one
voltage regulator for the logic, and it could be a 5V linear one or a
switching regulator. The display uses either high voltage DC for
fluorescent displays, a low voltage (roughly 15V) AC source for LCDs.
Any switching regulator can have electrolytic capacitors wear out.
Replace them with Japanese ones from Mouser.com, BDent.com, or
DigiKey.com.

How do I know to replace a carburetor on a small engine instead of
rebuilding the carburetor?

Rebuilding works 98% of the time.

What to look for to determine if replacement is needed.
1. missing parts.
2. broken parts.

Running swill like Arco gas through it will certainly cause any
soft parts to degrade and need replacement a lot sooner.
