Brand new out of the box and the footswitch is broken. Owner wants me to
replace the switch rather than returning to the importers for a replacement.
While in there try and sort out what apparently is an age-old problem with
such external reverb boxes. Set guitar , amp and reverb for clean and then
excess gain when changing to "dirty" ch. He does not use the second footsw
so I'm thinking of using that to switch in a preset over some gain setting
part of the cct - anyone been here before?
Hiding to nothing?
Existing user pots are output level and dwell but not mix.
LED next to that sw already there to indicate the gain state if I alteM

Sw marked with logo YIS in a diamond on one side and RoHS on the other - say
no more. Will have to break into this sw to see what this new to me,

A right pain to desolder, double sided thin board, thin traces, tiny pads ,
plated thru holes and PbF solder. 19 inch rack amp but with unnecessary
miniature complex asymmetric switch impossible to find replacement for, 4
pole,3 way, but only 8 of the 16 pins used here. "re-soldered" with copious
flux before hot-air desoldering because of extra PbF temp . Not contacts
corrossion it would seem. I suspect sloppy phosphor bronze contact
carrier/slider in outer metal shell, will rebuild with 0.5mm hard PTFE strip
padding out one side to stop it flopping about, and cleaning contacts.
Maker YSC logo and also DC stamped on the outer.

Hi Arfa,
It was running just fine, then without any warning the display went off
and the little red standby LED in the middle of the button started
flashing. 3short, delay, 1long, off, delay then the sequence starts
again.

No I haven't disconnected the backlight panel. There seems to be 6 or 8
inverters on a separate panel running vertically up the left side,
viewed from the rear. There is a single multiway cable connecting the
inverter panel to the PSU board. The backlight panel is under a metal
screen, making it hard to see underneath without removing fairly
substantial metalwork.

It's only the plug to the inverter board that you need to remove. From the
described symptoms, I doubt that the problem is going to be that, but it is
common for backlight inverters to fail on all makes of LCD TV, and the
excess load then placed on the PSU's 24v rail can cause some odd and bizarre
startup problems, depending on how and where the supply monitors it's output
voltages and the current draws on the various rails. Normally, although the
connector to the inverter board has a lot of wires, most of them are just
paralleled-up +24v and gnd. There is often a control wire also.

I was unable to check further with my mate today, as he is off with man-flu.
The other guy in the shop is more computers than TV, so doesn't know a lot
about TV faults.

Yes I did disconnect the cable from the main board to the inverter board
where it connects to the PSU board. It made no difference ! :-(

I've a sneaky feeling that the flashing sequence of the power LED is
trying to tell me something, but I haven't been able to find out what.

I'm afraid thats the camp I'm in. 35+ years ago TV's were much more
understandable, read simple, to understand.

I've seen some of those that ended up being just two wires stuck out of
the PCB.

I agree ! The only comment that I would add is be carful of physical
size and lead spacing. I've been caught out by slightly larger
diameter and hight restraints. In particular intel boards where there
have been 6 or more caps arranged tight side by side.

Yes I agree ! I've also found that the caps in the RAM PSU circuits go
bad in the same way. Very often, particularly on newer boards the RAM
has its own dedicated PSU. The caps are much smaller both physically
and in value, but also go high ESR causing some very strange behavior.

That's rapidly becoming a major part of my business, second only to
malware removal.

No. It takes too much time. If it's obvious that there are bad caps
in the box, the only decision is whether to replace ALL the caps, not
probing around looking for sections to avoid. Where I get into
trouble is when I get a working machine, that has obvious signs of
leaking or bulging caps, that will eventually die. The customer often
does not want me to do a major motherboard capacitor replacement if
it's still working. Oddly, some of these machines have lasted years
with obvious bulging caps.

No. I use the shotgun approach and just replace every cap of the same
type. The time I spend doing the "extra" caps is about the same as
what it would take to probe around looking for the worst offenders.
The idea is to do the job once, and not have it come back with
additional blown caps.

Ouch. I've bought bulk caps on eBay suspecting that I may be asking
for trouble by installing garbage caps. When possible, I'll buy
Panasonic caps because I've had no problems with them. If it will
fit, I try to increase the voltage rating, even if it means using a
smaller capacitance value. I have attempted some accelerated lifetime
testing using an ESR meter, with inconclusive results. At this time,
I can't tell the difference between a new bad cap, and new good cap. I
consider uprating the caps near the CPU as mandatory as I know (and
have measured and calculated) that they are running too hot for their
voltage rating. Also, I try to use polymer caps, but they're only
available in smaller values and kinda expensive.

Not totally true. The problem with getting a new machine is that the
customer will have to pay me to transplant their software to the new
machine. Often, that's more expensive than the machine. If it
involves an OS upgrade, it gets more complicated. Of course if the
machine is ancient, it's not an issue.

There's little difference between home and "commercial" machines these
days unless you're talking about servers. Well, maybe more chrome and
glitz on the home machines.

It's about 50% here. If the machine is more than about 6 years old,
I'll usually suggest a replacement. If fairly recent (Core2Duo or
better), I fix it. My recent batting average is about 75% success. It
was much worse in the past when I didn't replace all the caps.

However, a major problem has been BGA array soldering. If I dive into
the machine, replace all the caps, there are still plenty of other
things that can cause a subsequent warranty problem. I try to warn
the customer that replacing the caps is a "best effort" and that if it
fails, they're committed to buying a new machine, and that I owe them
a new machine. It's awkward, messy, and full of problems. They have
to recognize that recapping involved some risk. It's often easier to
just suggest they buy a new machine than to deal with the ethical
issues required to convince them that simply touching their machine
does not create a lifetime warranty.

I think I would make a distinction between child porn the owwner
created versus stuff that looks clearly purchased, even though both
are illegal.

I bought a big harddrive at a hamfest last summer and it wasn't wiped
like most are, adn on it was nothing involving children, but there was
some porn, a little bit of labeled with a web-addreess, so it was
clearly downloaded, a free sample perhaps, and a couple short videos
that had no one in them that looked anything like the owner of the
hard drive.

OTOH, there were others that looked home made, because the same "girl"
appeared in the bedroom and ohter plces like at a restaurant.
Actually some of the girls wree in their 50's and quite unattractive,
and a couple were darn good looking and pretty young, but still 25 or
30. I think the man is not married. He also had a lot of family
pictures. (I've thought of trying to find him in case these were his
only copies of the pictures.)

My point is that maybe the op can tell if it was user created, or
received from a friend?, versus bought, where the customers arrest
wouldn't have any repercussion for the sellers, iiuc. I don't know
entirely how, but I could clearly tell the differnce in what I saw.

Any other evidence of a real crime, like videos of vandalism,
muggings, arson, murders, should be turned over to the police, and I
don't think any defense claims, if any, that the computer repair man
inserted anything will be believed by anyone.

Just a couple days ago there was another example of some group
videoing their beating up a homeless man.

OTOH, how can a customer be so stupid he takes teh computer in if it
contains anything illegal. There are some people who wouldn't even
ask advice and woudl take it to the police if it showed someone
spitting on the sidewalk. That's illegal too some places.

FWIW, search warrants don't relate to private parties, only the
government. They don't give search warrants to private parties, not
even private detectives. Only to government law enforement persons.

"Invasion of privacy" is a term that can apply lots of places but only
a few of them are illegal or tortious.

However the OP says he was nosy and snooping. If he says that
elsewhere or used his real name here, he's weakened his defense a lot.

You may well be right about this. If I sent my diary in to have it

I forgot about child abuse. That's even worse than naked poses of a
child, which is all I had in mind that I called pornography.

To the others, if the OP had no reason to suspect a crime and he
snooped just because he was nosy, yes, that's unethical, but his
unethical behaviour doesn't mean he has to hide in the corner after he
found something bad. If the right thing to do for a perfectly ehtical
person, who only found this stuff because he needed to verify that the
.jpg viewer was working, and he chose a picture named NiagraFalls
because he thought it wouldnt' be personal, if the proper thing to do
for him is to go to the police, then it's the proper thing for a
snooper to do too. If the OP were a murderer, it would still be the
proper thing to do. Everyone has failings; some are even criminals;
it doesn't mean they're not allowed to turn in other people who commit
crimes. Rather, they have the same moral obligations the rest of us
do.

In this case, the machine wouldn't boot.

If one has material one does not wish others to see -- legal or illegal --
it should be stored on an external drive. One can then hand the computer to
a serviceman without worry.

Though the temptation to snoop can be overwhelming, an ethical serviceman
will resist the temptation at all times. No one expects him to "play
police", and no reasonable person would condemn him for not prying, even in
cases of child molestation or murder.

It's NOT his business to spy on his neighbors and report unacceptable
behavior. The Constitution protects our privacy, and though that protection
doesn't generally apply to snooping by neighbors, an ethical person will
respect that protection.

Ethical as what? A businessman or a human being? The fact that you

What was it? Hidden camera videos of the cutomer boffing a series of
adults of either gender? 'Snuff' porn, 'crush' porn, or some local
politician in drag? The same answer applies - give the computer back
to the customer, collect your usual fee (less 10% to remind yourself
to behave next time).

If it was genuine kiddie porn - an adult abusing a pre-teen, you have
a chance to prove your qualifications as a decent human being. Call
the police, show them what you found, and prepare to suffer the
fallout.

In parts of the world, you never call of the police unless they have
someone to arrest to drag away to jail. Wasting a policemans time is
a bad idea. A neighbor called the police over some trivial matter
that was easily resolved before they arrived. Dissapointed, he walked
around the neighborhood, found some pot plants, and arrested everyone
in sight. In a different incident, a neighbor threw the building
inspector out of her house. So, we went around and ticketed me for
having an unregistered dead vehicle on the property. Unless you have
a clear cut complaint, that requires no decision making on the part of
the policeman, don't call.

That's great. Scorched earth, computer style. If you can't have the
porno, nobody can. Be prepared for customer retribution. The devine
retribution will have to wait.

There's always a compromise, which doesn't quite make everyone happy,
but should be sufficient.

3. Move, not copy, the porno to a DVD and hand him the DVD. Clean
the stuff off the computer. He may even thank you for doing his
housekeeping for him. You can also sell him an external USB or eSATA
drive to keep his porno off the main machine, so his wife won't find
it.

I make image backups (Acronis 2011) of all my customers drives before
I start working on them. It's mostly to cover myself in case I erase
something important, or in case a virus removal goes awry. If he
wants his porno back, it's at least available.

I think I've broken all ten rules. As I recall, the original ten
commandments were only a subset of about 600 assorted ammendments,
rules, and regulations that arrived later, so there's plenty of room
for creativity.

A good start would be the gold (plated) rule. Do unto the customer as
you would have them do unto you. If you give your computer to me for
repair, I don't think you would be very happy if I gave it back to you
in pieces.

A friend is being coerced by circumstance into learning a bit of
electronics, and has need for a basic scope. I told him he could borrow
my old one, since I don't use it much anymore. But, he's thinking about
getting his own, and I have no idea what's available these days. Any
suggestions about:

manufacturers to look at or avoid
distributor recommendations
used from ebay?
standalone vs. handheld scopemeter vs. PC based

would be welcome. Requirements are minimal, dual trace would be nice but
we aren't talking about stratospheric frequencies or many bells and
whistles. Personally I like the standalone with the physical knobs and
switches, but maybe some of the handhelds or the PC based units with
soft controls are decent these days.

Seems like an awful question. But, I would say go Ebay with something
cheap and is
working properly.

I use to suggest Hameg analog/digital scopes, but that was before I
tried to use one !!!

PC-based USB-interfaced 'scopes tend not to have stellar sample rates.
There's usually a note in the fine print that the advertised sample rate
is "equivalent time sampling" which is okay for repetitive waveforms but
not so much for single event captures -- and single events are one of
the nice things you get with digital scopes.

GW Instek and Rigol each have reasonably-priced 100 MHz, 1 Gsps dual
channel models that could be a starting point for comparison

This Samsung HCN4767W projection set is really making a nuisance of
itself. It had a blown convergence IC when I acquired it, so I replaced them
both. It ran for a few days in the shop (about 6-8 hours a day), then blew
one of the same IC's again. I replaced them again, and also replaced the
convergence processor board. Again, it seemed to work fine for a few days,
but now the bloody IC's have blown again. The supply voltage to the IC's is
a solid 25V (pos. and neg.), well within the 50V max. supply voltage the
IC's are rated for. Both IC's are properly heatsinked, though they seem to
run quite hot - I assumed this was just normal. I've also gone through the
convergence board and power supply looking for caps up in ESR, but found
none.
The replacement IC's were supposed to be OEM, but I have to wonder just
how compatible they really are. It's the only explanation I can think of.
I'm tired of wasting time and money on this piece of junk. Unless I can be
certain any further replacement parts will work, I'm going to scrap it and
take my losses, which would be close to $300 as of right now. I will also
vow to never gamble on a Samsung again - they're nothing but trouble.
Any advice would be appreciated
