Compliments of friend, we mow have a good example of what happens
when one shorts the terminals of a 9V Duracell ProCell alkaline
battery.

He mentioned that the battery sounded like a small firecracker when
it exploded. The white debris scattered around the desk is probably
the paper battery plate spacer material.

That's interesting, they make 9 volts with 6 cylindrical cells.
I remember taking 9V batteries apart in the '60s and they were
a flat stack of rectangular cells

Once I thought it was safe to put 2 9 volts together...they started
smoking and crackling in my pocket!

Thanks for the clarification. I suspected something like that, but didn't
consider the cable's self-inductance would be significant at 100kHz.

In other words... If the driving frequency is high enough that the
capacitive reactance is essentially zero, then the net impedance is
essentially the ESR. Right?

But it ain't that simple.
One has to examine the actual impedance curves for typical electros to see
what the game is - the curve is like no other kind of cap.
Think of Q factors of circa 0.05 and ESRs that way exceed the calculated
impedance at 100kHz.

Nice tip thanks Phil. The 100uF electro's I have came out with ~0.15
ohms of ESR, using your method.
I've never seen an impedance curve for an electro cap. Do you have a
link or know which manufacturer's website I might check?
As a 'silly' rule of thumb it seems that most caps I run across have a
minimum impedance of ~0.1 ohms. (Ignoring the 'resonant' dips that
you sometimes see in the impedance plot.)

Thanks. No back pains now, after I stopped taking statins. Not to
worry. I've been running hepatic function blood tests since I started
taking statins. The bad news is that statins seems to have done some
permanent muscle damage in my back and arms. Also, liver cancer is a
potential problem for me as I had prostate cancer in 2006, which tends
to spread to adjacent organs. I'm also watching that with irregular
PSA tests. Still, this is all a good excuse for not running wires
under floors and above ceilings.
None of this worries me as I already know how I'll meet my end. It
will be in a supermarket parking lot, run over by some hurried shopper
going diagonally across the parking spaces, thinking that all the
rules of the road are suspended in the parking lot. I've come closer
to meeting my end in such parking lots than from any medical or
military condition.

Relax. The instructions in my will are to burn everything to the
ground in a giant funeral pyre. That makes the final distribution of
property rather simple. If there's something you want or need, please
ask before my demise so that I can inform the appropriate tax agency.
The good news is that the first $12,000 is tax free. The bad news is
that the various tax agencies are using eBay prices for appraisals and
don't care if it's working or broken. My guess is that I have a few
more years to live, so your request might be a bit premature.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/01/24/national/main7279444.shtml
(AP) COLUMBIA, S.C. - A Spartanburg County woman has been charged with
felony animal cruelty, accused of hanging her nephew's pit bull with an
electrical cord and burning its body after the dog chewed on her Bible,
authorities said Monday.
When questioned by police and animal control officers, Miriam Smith told
them the female dog named "Diamond" was a "devil dog" and she feared it
might harm neighborhood children, according to an incident report from
the county's Environmental Enforcement Department.
Smith, 65, was arrested Sunday and remains in the Spartanburg County
jail. Bond has not been set. Officials said she doesn't have an attorney
yet and there was no phone number listed for her Pacolet Mills home.
She faces 180 days to five years in prison if convicted.
Authorities said the 1-year-old dog was kept outside on a chain and
chewed the Bible that had been left on Smith's porch. The dog's remains
were found under a pile of dried, cut grass. Part of the orange cord was
still around the dog's neck and a smell of kerosene still hung in the
air, the animal control officer wrote in her report.
The dog was killed about two weeks ago when Smith's nephew was forced to
spend several days away from home because of winter weather in the area,
authorities said.
Smith is the first person is Spartanburg County to face a felony charge
under South Carolina's tougher animal cruelty law, said Jaime Nelson,
director of the county's Environmental Enforcement Department.
Smith's mental state will likely affect what kind of penalties she
faces, Nelson added. He said he was stunned by how flat the woman's
emotions sounded as she recounted on tape what happened to the dog.
"She just acted like - what's done has been done," Nelson said.
