Rev. 11D Meow! <rev.11d.meow@gmail.com>: Jun 11 06:46PM -0700 I've hunted all over and find decades old information on this being a typical problem for this unit, but cannot find the parts & instructions on how to fix it.   I Have The Tools   Anyone familiar with this situation on these units, so I can get mine working again, please?   In the interim I bought their PCM-M1 in mint condition to get going again, but it'd be really nice to get my old tried & true TCD-D8 running again as it's in pristine condition other than this failure to load.   Thanks

First suspect would be the cassette detect switch bent or corroded. If motor tries to work then perhaps its failure of the multi-poles of the motor, they are so close together they jump and "fuse" , whatever the terminology is. Press Record and it says TAPE PROTECT, oopsy UnLoad Tape {there's no label on this tape so it is probably FRANK ZAPPA LIVE AT THE KINGDOME OR SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT TODAY!} un-latch write-protect on DAT tape thingy put it back in and it says LOAD for a second then all zeros as that's where it was last time or something Press Record nothing happens Oh, Wait, Press Play to begin THE ARMED RECORDING thingy er, uh, no it's press Record & Play at The Same Time, oopsy AH HA moment WRITE shows up for a second or two then the tape transport STOPS and we are still at all zeros tape time.   hmmmmmmmmmm   what now, bloss?

Even then I wouldn't fix one of these unless I had to, they were and are a nightmare.   Partly due to the fact that they have a miniature head, meaning you have to wrap the tape around a load more of it than the 90 degrees a normal head requires. And being kind of small, they were kind of a bastard to work on anyway.   Typical DAT problems are dirty or broken Mode Switches. These tell the machine what position the transport and loading mechanism are in. Or won't if they don't work properly. You can sometimes clean these with switch cleaner.   Other common loading problems is the loading mech not getting the tape quite far enough when trying to wrap it round the head. This can be due to worn or dry sleds and runners. Careful lubrication might help. You can sometimes clarify whether this is the problem by trying to give them a helping hand whilst loading - sometimes you will be able to push them fully home.   But there are all sorts of other mechanical things that wear, lose their lubricants, and were just not designed well in the first place. It's usually a combination of many many different things being not quite right any more.     If you want a DAT that is very easy to work on, get a Panasonic SV3700 or 3800.     Good luck.       Gareth.

There is no turning back the hands of time, and this was a one way street. They are not going to eliminate the advances in technology that allows one person to do the work of ten, that would be stupid. And they are not going to pay peolle $35 an hours to sweep floors and flip burgers. Machines will do the rest, for noting an hour. I can prove it to insurance companies, though I? have no paper credentials. I'll walk them though it on the stand if necessary. But what are they going to do ? It is totaly unnecessary for regulation, it passes no DC. there should be very little ripple there, but when C9015 develps a little ESR it is gong to affect regulation and make the voltage, most likely drop a bit under certain conditions, like when cold.   Then the effect on the firmware is goiung to be like an older PC when the CMOS battery starts to get low. Sure it might stop boting, but another high possiblity is the dat will be corrupted. And data corruption was a cnnom failure in that model.   Some wuill say that network stabilises the power supply. While that may be true though totaly unnecessary it has a quite useful function as far as the manufacturer is concerned, it causes a failure, and that will likely be out of warranty.   This is how they can do things insidiously. For decades I have been saying it is a war between servicers and manufacturers. Like when they put electrolytics right near a heatsink. What did they think waas gong to happen ? Lenny     Wasn't it great back in the 80s? The company I worked for did over 95% warranty work on televisions. Hitachi paid $50.00 dollars per set for labor and were the quickest to fix, AOC paid $35.00, Phillips paid 40.00 major, $20.00 minor. The tech got 42% of the labor and I completed between 8 and 9 sets a day on average. The company paid completely for health insurance. A friend of mine got testicular cancer from the cleaning chemicals we used on car stereos. Our insurance company paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to save his life including months at a treatment center in Houston. He didn't pay a cent. I make less now than I did then, not counting inflation, and I don't enjoy the work I am doing as a server administrator. The insurance I have now kept my wife from having a vital treatment for months when she had cancer. I guess they were hoping she would die. That seems to be the only variable here. Thanks, Lenny   I'm pretty sure that a typical washing machine motor for instance does not have brushes. I think that would make it an induction motor. I have some spare Maytag washing machine motors down in the basement that I liberated from machines at the town dump. They run at 1725RPM, (I think that speed is directly related to line frequency), and I don't think they have brushes either. They do however have centrifugal switches though. So I think that would that make that type of motor a compound type.   My tool motor has two wires coming out of the field that go directly to the AC line. On the other side of the field there are two more wires that go to the brushes. There is no centrifugal switch. And that's it, a very simple scenario. This one I think is a series motor. The other thing is that this Rigid motor spins at 9000 RPM. We're going to try to reverse the brush wires and see what happens. Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll let you know how it turns out.
